Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: Purpose - Catastrophic supply chain risks can have severe effects on companies' supply chains. Still, previous supply chain risk management research has predominantly focused on operationalrisks. The purpose of this study is to explore the construct of managerial risk perception and the assessment stage of catastrophic supply chain risks.Design/methodology/approach - A risky decision making model for catastrophic supply chain risks was applied in an explorative multiple case study approach. Interviews served as the mainsource for information.Findings - The degree of supply chain integration was found to be a prime determinant of the potential damage caused by disruptions due to catastrophic supply chain risks. The frequency of catastrophic supply chain events seems to be influenced to some degree by the number of suppliers. It is suggested that managerial perception of catastrophic supply chain risks is formed by the degree of potential damage and past exposure to catastrophic supply chain events. Several barriers to the assessment of catastrophic supply chain risks, such as missing top management priority, low supply chain risk management maturity and lack of obvious return were identified.A combination of "softer" supply chain risk assessment methods, expert opinions and simulation te...

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

Despite the existence of the concept of Supply Chain for decades, very little is known about how companies come together and which factors they take into consideration when selecting their business partners. Furthermore, when operating in the Supply Chain, companies focus more on efficiently utilizing company resources than effectively satisfying customers’ needs. The aim of this research was to test and scrutinize the factors that suppliers, manufacturers and distributors/retailers consider most important in the decision processes of choosing partners in a Supply Chain. It investigated if Focal Companies in each of these categories (suppliers, manufacturers and retailers) take the same factors into consideration and identified metrics which companies focus on, in measuring the performance of a Supply Chain in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of Supply Chain processes. A webmail questionnaire was developed and administered to 525 companies within the forestry, manufacturing and retail industries in Sweden, of which 101 were answered giving a response rate of 19.2%. The empirical findings have been analyzed in comparison with existing theories and conclusions reached.

Utility analysis in supply chain is growing concerns for the supply chain practitioners. With more options open, the supply chain players' preference become multidimensional. The utility analysis with more than one parameter is a challenging task with non-cooperating players in the supply chain. In this book, the utility is analyzed with two vital parameters in the supply chain procurement function; price per unit and quantity of interest. Based on this analysis, the auction mechanism is derived for task allocation in the supply chain. The proposed framework for the auction mechanism includes major paradigms of envy-free solutions.

Revision with unchanged content. Companies are competing in fast changing markets, characterised by high levels of variety and competition. Therefore they need two capabilities: the capability to understand their markets in terms of market drivers and market trends; and secondly the capability of a company and its supply chain to respond in a timely yet efficient manner. Managing such supply chains will be difficult without some degree of process integration and collaboration between supply chain partners. A first step is to know their own and that of their suppliers' performance capability. Michael Seitz's work was about constructing a performance measurement tool to identify the operational performance between adjacent members of a supply chain. The SCOR model was used as the basis of the Performance Measurement System. This was extended to include a Collaborative Index, an additional measurement which could assess the levels of supply chain integration and collaboration, and a Stability Index, which was developed to measure the robustness of the evaluated supply chain. This book is interesting for students and decision makers working in the area of supply chain who want to gain a deeper knowledge about measuring supply chain performance.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich BWL - Unternehmensführung, Management, Organisation, Note: 1,0, Universität Wien (Institut für Transportwirtschaft und Logistik), 120 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: M&A activities are widely seen as a magic bullet to improve ones own position in an increasingly competitive environment. In 2006 more deals will be concluded than ever before. However, nearly all existing studies about merger success have shown the same results: only very few deals create meaningful value while half of all mergers actually destroy value. The main hypothesis of this master's thesis is that there is a high correlation between merger success and the way the supply chains of the two merging companies are integrated. Moreover supply chain management and mergers & acquisitions are two management instruments that - if used appropriately - highly support each other. In other words: supply chain management will make or break post-merger performance of a firm. The results of a survey conducted in the German speaking countries confirmed this assumption and give interesting insights in best practices of successful M&A management. However, in the M&A reality supply chain management still plays an insignificant role. It must be the aim to boost the scholarly discussion about this topic as well as its attention in practice. To determine supply chain synergies a new concept is presented. It is based on the SCOR-model ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Kempten, language: English, abstract: The goal of this master thesis is to provide an analysis of existing supply chain performance measurement systems as well as an evaluation of their suitability for the electronics manufacturing industry. Furthermore, the hypothesis that the implementation of a supply chain performance measurement system in cooperation with supply chain partners will lead to sustainable competitive advantages within the supply chain is going to be proven. As competitiveness in future industry will be increasingly "supply chain vs. supply chain", rather than "firm vs. firm", holistic performance measurement systems become more and more relevant to global operating companies (Hult, 2008, p.538). Although the efficient management of global supply chain networks already has the potential to create competitive advantages, most industrial companies still focus on production efficiency and selective optimization that disable fast adaption to changing customer requirements. In increasingly saturated markets a technology-driven competitive advantage is often quickly compensated by low-cost countries. In contrast high service quality established by efficient logistics processes can hardly be adopted in short time (Richert, 2006, p.44). Especially in the areas of fast moving consumer goods and the electro...

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: Distinction, University of Manchester (Manchester Business School), language: English, abstract: Since 1980's the Japanese car manufacturing industry has been celebrated as the most efficient car industry in the world regarding production systems and processes. However, on 16 July 2007 this efficiency of the entire Japanese automotive industry was challenged when an earthquake hit the Chuetsu region in Japan and decimated a small but critical portion of its supply chain. Riken Corp., a supplier of automobile engine components such as piston rings, was this critical sup-ply chain bit. Its failure to operate after the event caused a chain reaction of plant closures of the main eight Japanese car manufacturers and parallelised nearly 70 per cent of the world biggest auto production industry. The underlying qualitative study adopts some conceptual supply chain resilience management models available in the academic literature as theoretical lenses to analyze the Riken Corp. case. The main argument of this research paper is that while the Japanese automotive supply chain is capable of delivering an efficient and effective response to and recovery from an interruption, it, however, lacks the capability of event readiness, which is the active resilience preparation for a supply chain disruption.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,2, European School of Business Reutlingen (Business Adminstration), language: English, abstract: The environmental surroundings of most companies have changed radically in recent years. Especially the competitive pressure has risen substantially over the past decades, fuelled by an increased globalization of markets and supply chains. In order to continuously satisfy consumer needs in a timely manner, organizations have to focus on performance and efficiency improvement measures. In terms of supply chain management, performance includes the three dimensions efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility which have to be dealt with on an equal basis. One mean to improve supply chain performance is the linkage between various IT applications involved in the whole supply chain. These efforts and trends are treated under the term electronic supply chain management (E-SCM). There are three major critical success factors for the successful operation of an electronic supply chain. These can be clustered into decision motivation (e.g. a shared vision and a strong motivation), implementation process (e.g. the tight integration of inter-organizational information systems and the re-engineering of inter-organizational business processes) and infrastructure conditions (e.g. agreement upon a shared industry standard). There are numerous benefits of an E-SCM implementati...

From a supply chain perspective, often big differences exist between global raw material suppliers' approaches to supply their respective local markets. The progressing complexity of large centrally managed global supply networks and their often-unknown upstream ramifications increase the likelihood of undetected bottlenecks and inefficiencies. It is therefore necessary, to develop an approach to strategically master the upstream complexity of such networks from a holistic perspective, in order to align regional competitive priorities and supply chain structures. The research is set in the context of polyamide engineering thermoplastics in the automotive industry. Based on an initial industry analysis and a literature review, a conceptual framework is developed. The framework is matched with existing empirical and theoretical literature, as well as multiple case study analyses in the relevant supply market and a centrally managed global supply network. As a result, strategic group theory is transferred into the supply network management context, to allow for the consideration of upstream supply chain structures in the category strategy development process. The proposed approach introduces strategic groups of supply chains as a segmentation criterion for complex global supply networks, which enables the network-wide alignment of competitive priorities, flexibility requirements, and partnerships with suppliers. Supply chain-based category strategies can effectively reduce th...

Anyway, our knowledge on creating an integrated supply chain and how companies manage to coordinate their internal and external activities is yet limited. Limited is also our knowledge on the extent that supply chain integration relates to or impacts customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, and firm’s competitiveness. This study aims to shed light on some of the unknown aspects of supply chain integration. Focusing on retail businesses in Albania, it tries to develop a deep knowledge on antecedent factors that lead to an integrated supply chain, as well as to uncover the impacts that supply chain integration has on customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and firm's competitiveness.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,0, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, course: Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Everyday thousands of containers are shipped worldwide in order to fulfil customer orders in time. Nowadays focusing only on domestic markets is no longer an option for achieving long-term business success as global competition forces companies to recognise the need for superior design, planning, operation, and coordination of their supply chain activities. These are strongly supported by the rapid progress of information technologies. This thesis aims at establishing the importance of information and its effects on supply chain management, thereby pointing out key aspects that technology plays in managing information. It is structured in the following way: The first chapter defines the relevant terminologies helpful in understanding the overall topic. The second chapter moves on to describe in greater detail the effective management of information flows and their relevance for the three supply chain macro processes. Before proceeding to examine information technologies; chapter 3 deals with the collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment approach in order to outline a framework for information exchange along the supply chain. Supply chain management, a generally overlooked area of management, is steadily evolving into a corporate function of ever-growing economic importance. Yet is this increasing importance reflected in environmental protection? This book offers a novel theoretical model on how supply chain management could become an environmental change agent and assesses the empirical evidence for supply chain involvement in corporate greening. Ranging from the personal level through the organizational to the level of the political economy, suggestions are made how the supply chain function can make fuller use of the environmental potential.

Globalization no longer means simply finding low-cost countries for sourcing, but has involved to include the opportunity for growth in Asia's emerging domestic markets, specifically China. This development results in extended, truly global supply chains and thus places a higher pressure on working capital. Therefore, several definitions of Supply Chain Management already encompass financial aspects and demand a more integrated consideration of material, information, and financial flows within supply chains. However, more precise theory on "Supply Chain Financing" is understudied and initial implementation of related solutions in industry has only gained momentum during and after the economic and financial crises of 2008 and 2009.In contrast to traditional financial instruments for supply chains - for instance trade finance products which have been around for more than a century - Supply Chain Financing leverages larger and influential members of supply chains. These firms might, for instance, provide easier and cheaper access to financing for smaller supply chain members supporting their profitability through renegotiated and reduced purchasing prices. Echoing recent research results on supply chain risk management, other firms may prefer to take on a supply chain perspective and work on creating agile and resilient supply chains. In this context, Supply Chain Financing can be employed to ensure liquidity for crucial upstream and downstream supply chain partners ...

The agrifood supply chain of perishable products is affected by environmental abuses from harvest to the final destination responsible for the uncontrolled deterioration of food. The factor mainly influencing the food quality is the temperature able to inhibit or stimulate deterioration processes. The present work shows that the temperature monitoring through innovative and non-invasive technologies can ameliorate the decision making process thus improving the efficiency/responsiveness of the supply chain. The suitability of such an approach is evaluated by monitoring food quality during pre and post harvest stages. In the pre-harvest stage innovative technologies joined to growth models lead to the determination of ripeness date. In the post-harvest they allow to monitor the remaining quality at any stage of the supply chain allowing the proper delivering of products in markets where they are still suitable for selling. Finally the topic of the implementation costs of the innovative technologies is tackled. The work is addressed to the supply chain members supporting them to take decisions in the context of agrifood supply chain encouraging the use of innovative technologies.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 80.00, Louvain School of Management, language: English, abstract: This paper addresses the question of how the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), defined as the industrial aspect of the fourth industrial revolution, will impact supply chain management (SCM) decisions. With this goal in mind, we first describe the conceptual and historical approaches of both the industry and supply chain management. The question of the legitimacy of a new industrial revolution is answered positively and the supply chain management discipline is organised in a flow-based model of ten managerial categories. A thorough cross-field literature analysis delivers the main changes, opportunities and challenges that the upcoming IIoT will bring to supply chains. A neutral approach is favoured and the generally optimistic literature regarding the IIoT is questioned. Cyber-physical systems will indeed redefine the way we provide goods and services to customers and therefore, the way entire supply chains are managed, strategically and operationally. More information, connectivity and intelligence will optimise operations to enable mass customisation and faster than ever times-to-market. Those changes will gradually transform supply chains into smart supply ecosystems, where inter-company boundaries will fade, and the nature of cooperation will evolve. Nonetheless, there is still a long way t...

Matt Shatzkin Understanding the Complexity of Emergency Supply Chains

4527 руб.
While conventional commercial supply chains may be complicated, emergency supply chains are inherently complex. In responding to an emergency, they lack a developed forecast, primarily use manual requisitioning systems, and do not possess sophisticated means to sense and respond to the rapidly emerging and changing demand. Multiple stakeholders come together, many for the first time, to execute "on the fly." Their success is mostly defined by effectiveness, in either preserving combat capability or providing relief; the primary focus becomes getting the job accomplished "at all costs." As a result, supply chain efficiency is an afterthought, and optimization is difficult, if not undesired. This book completes the education of both practitioners and academics across multiple domains and disciplines. It contributes to military and nongovernmental operators, logisticians, and organizations' understanding of emergency supply chain strengths and vulnerabilities. Similarly, emergency management professionals will gain a sense of how these supply chains accomplish, limit, or constrain the emergency management process. Undergraduates and other supply chain professionals seeking a deeper understanding of supply chains will also benefit, as the book explores circumstances that run contrary to supply chain theory and thus reinforces a solid grasp on supply chain fundamentals.

Remove built-in supply chain weak points to more effectively balance supply and demand Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment shows how companies can support supply chain metrics and business initiatives by removing the weak points built into their inventory systems. Beginning with a thorough examination of Just in Time, Efficient Consumer Response, and Collaborative Forecasting, Planning, and Replenishment, this book walks you through the mathematical shortcuts set up in your management system that prevent you from attaining supply chain excellence. This expanded second edition includes new coverage of inventory performance, business verticals, business initiatives, and metrics, alongside case studies that illustrate how optimized inventory and replenishment delivers results across retail, high-tech, men's clothing, and food sectors. Inventory optimization allows you to avoid out-of-stock situations without impacting the bottom line with excessive inventory maintenance. By keeping just the right amount of inventory on hand, your company is better able to meet demand without sacrificing the cost-effectiveness of other supply chain strategies. The trick, however, is determining «just the right amount»—and this book provides the background and practical guidance you need to do just that. Examine the major supply chain strategies of the last 30 years Remove the shortcuts that prohibit supply chain excellence Optimize your supply/demand balance in any vertical Overcome systemic weaknesses to strengthen the bottom line Inventory optimization is benefitting companies around the world, as exemplified here by case studies involving Matas, PWT, Wistron, and Amway. When inefficiencies are built into the system, it's only smart business to identify and remove them—and implement a new streamlined process that runs like a well-oiled machine. Everyone can impact the supply chain Supply Chain Management For Dummies helps you connect the dots between things like purchasing, logistics, and operations to see how the big picture is affected by seemingly isolated inefficiencies. Your business is a system, made of many moving parts that must synchronize to most efficiently meet the needs of your customers—and your shareholders. Interruptions in one area ripple throughout the entire operation, disrupting the careful coordination that makes businesses successful; that's where supply chain management (SCM) comes in. SCM means different things to different people, and many different models exist to meet the needs of different industries. This book focuses on the broadly-applicable Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model: Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return, and Enable, to describe the basic techniques and key concepts that keep businesses running smoothly. Whether you're in sales, HR, or product development, the decisions you make every day can impact the supply chain. This book shows you how to factor broader impact into your decision making process based on your place in the system. Improve processes by determining your metrics Choose the right software and implement appropriate automation Evaluate and mitigate risks at all steps in the supply chain Help your business function as a system to more effectively meet customer needs We tend to think of the supply chain as suppliers, logistics, and warehousing—but it's so much more than that. Every single person in your organization, from the mailroom to the C-suite, can work to enhance or hinder the flow. Supply Chain Management For Dummies shows you what you need to know to make sure your impact leads to positive outcomes.
