Alexandre Koyre From the Closed World to the Infinite Universe. Hideyo Noguchi Lecture

2018 Reprint of 1958 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a radical change occurred in the patterns and the framework of European thought. In the wake of discoveries through the telescope and Copernican theory, the notion of an ordered cosmos of "fixed stars" gave way to that of a universe infinite in both time and space—with significant and far-reaching consequences for human thought. Alexandre Koyré interprets this revolution in terms of the change that occurred in our conception of the universe and our place in it and shows the primacy of this change in the development of the modern world. Contents: Sky and the heavens -- New astronomy and the new metaphysics -- New astronomy against the new metaphysics -- Things never seen before and thoughts never thought: the discovery of new stars in the world space and the materialization of space -- Indefinite extension or infinite space -- God and space, spirit and matter -- Absolute space, absolute time and their relations to god -- Divinization of space -- God and the world: space, matter, ether, and spirit -- Absolute space and absolute time: god's frame of action -- Work-day god and the god of the sabbath – Conclusion.

Pierce Taylor Hibbs Finding God in the Ordinary

We tend to look for God in the grand and spectacular, but most of our lives are filled with ordinary moments and routines: drinking coffee, reading a book, driving to work. Can we find God in the banalities of everyday life? In Finding God in the Ordinary, the author shows that we can, and that we must. Our world is not an ordinary world. Because it was spoken into being and maintained by the word of God's power (Heb 1:3), everything around us is always revealing the nature and character of the triune God. Our world is extraordinarily ordinary, always calling our attention to the God of glory and his work in the commonplace.""I loved this short book by Pierce Taylor Hibbs on finding God in the ordinary. It is Scriptural, wise, and beautifully written. Reformed theologians are not supposed to write natural theologies, but the Bible itself says that God is clearly revealed in the creation, and that means not only in the big things like the skies and the mountains, but also in small things, like my morning cup of coffee. This book will help you to see God everywhere, for that is where he is.""--John M. Frame, author of Nature's Case for God""This book is a tremendous stimulus to seeing the world as God would have us see it, and interacting with the world as God would have us interact. It helps us by showing what was always there, God's presence in the ordinary. Creative, illuminating, and godly.""--Vern S. Poythress, author of Knowing ...

Dennis Dinger A Study of the Book of Job

The Book of Job presents the story of the sufferings of a man of God at the hands of the devil. God allowed it! In fact, God put Job forth to the devil as a wonderful servant of God! The Book of Job teaches how God operates in this world. As a servant of God, Job thought he knew God. . . . but not nearly as well as he thought he did. The book contrasts the knowledge of the world, represented in the words of Job's three friends, to Job's confusion concerning the ways of God, to the truth of God explained by the Lord! Hopefully, by studying the details of Job's experiences, each of us will learn to turn our attention and trust to God - without the need to personally endure affliction and suffering like Job!

Pierce Taylor Hibbs The Speaking Trinity and His Worded World

The Trinity is a speaking God: three divine persons who share the same essence and commune with each other in love and glory. How does this truth shape the way we view the world and our place in it? The Speaking Trinity and His Worded World explores these questions by presenting all of life through the lens of language. Understood as communion behavior, language has its roots in God himself. What's more, God has used language not only to create our world, but to sustain and direct it. Because of this biblical fact, we live in a place that always and everywhere reveals the trinitarian God whose speech upholds it. All things ""speak"" of God by revealing aspects of his character (Romans 1). We live in a worded world, a world that was spoken and speaks of God. Thus, language is far more than a means of human communication; it is at the center of who God is, who we are, and what our world is like. Join the author as he walks through redemptive history and points out not only how all things can be perceived through the lens of language, but what this means for us practically in our use of language.""Hibbs has given us an excellent book to present in accessible form the biblical basis for the centrality of language in God's communion with us, in God's creation and providence, and in human living. The book combines biblical exposition, practical examples, and clear, winsome writing. There is nothing like it on the subject of language!"" --...

Most of us have experienced the impact of randomness in our lives not only as individuals but in our interactions with others as well. In God and Randomness, which is a sequel to our 2014 publication God Is Here to Stay: Science, Evolution, and Belief in God, we describe the connection between randomness and God and how this connection has permeated our universe from the start. We cover several areas that include personal stories, the micro and macro sources of world events, the origins of our cosmos and solar system, the emergence of human mindfulness and choice, major episodes of the twentieth century, the future, and the quest for fairness. In the course of examining these topics, we identify how current scientific research is consistent with our speculation of how God influences our lives in the presence of all this randomness. We conclude that the random events affecting us may originate in other dimensions that are inaccessible to us and that God is actively at work in the chaos and randomness that pervades our lives and our world.""In God and Randomness, the authors explore the presence of randomness in processes that encompass everything in the universe, from the world of subatomic particles all the way to the solar system and the galaxies, as well as human life and human history. . . . All these issues and many more are examined in depth in God and Randomness, yet using very readable language.""--Francisco J. Ayala, Professor of Biological Sciences, Un...

Baldesar Castiglione, Leonard E. Opdycke The Book of the Courtier

Written by Baldasar Castiglione, count of Novilara and an Italian courtier himself, "The Book of the Courtier" remains as one of the most important and definitive accounts of Renaissance court life. Organized as a series of fictional conversations that occur between the courtiers of the Duke of Urbino in 1507, "The Book of the Courtier" discusses the expectations of a courtier who must have a warrior spirit, be athletic, and have good knowledge of the humanities, classics and fine arts. As the members of the court try to describe the perfect gentleman of the court over the course of four evenings they engage in a debate over the nature of nobility, humor, women, and love in the age of the Italian Renaissance. The English translation of Leonard E. Opdycke of this important historical writing is presented here in this edition of "The Book of the Courtier".

Richard Harries God Outside the Box - Why Spiritual People Object to Christianity

Is the Church a box from which God has escaped? Are people finding spirituality and relating to God in ways that have nothing to do with the Church? Men and women today have strong values and beliefs about caring for animals and for the creation, about tolerance for others of different beliefs and customs, and about how we each may live mature and fulfilled lives. They often feel that the Church's moral teaching does not come up to their standards. Objections to the traditional Christian view of God and religion include: Christianity focuses on sin and guilt: God's an egomaniac - he's designed the world solely for his praise: God sentences people to everlasting punishment: religion keeps people immature: religion is stuck in the past: religion is divisive: the belief in a wise and loving creator is not compatible with the suffering and agony evident in the world. In 'God Outside the Box', Richard Harries takes seriously thoughts and criticisms such as these and answers them in detail. "Bishop Harries believes that "Christianity has within its treasure store enormous spiritual riches". His book has certainly helped to display some of those riches which modern society desperately needs." The Tablet

Bruce G Epperly Angels, Mysteries, and Miracles. A Progressive Vision

There is a tendency among modern Christians to avoid comment on the idea of miracles or mysterious events that might indicate the direct intervention of God. There is an even more pronounced belief that modern liberal or progressive Christians will avoid these ideas. A God who is distant, the source of everything, is acceptable, but the idea of supernatural activity is embarrassing at best. There is virtually no room for theological discussions of angels, demons, and paranormal experiences.Bruce Epperly is a process theologian and a leading thinker in progressive Christian theology, and he believes we need to take another look at God and God’s involvement in the universe in which we live. Rather than finding ways to defend the intrusive interventions of a distant, supernatural God in the traditional sense of the word “miracle,” Bruce sees God as closer; so close, in fact, that God is part of all events. God providentially acts in all things, not in terms of outside intervention, but through ongoing natural interactions that change our lives and the world.Join Dr. Bruce Epperly as he explores a world of wonders in which is God uncomfortably and comfortingly, subtly and actively present.

The treatise states that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. It is the individual’s perceptions that make something appear to be good or bad. Spinoza believes in his deterministic universe that, "All things in nature proceed from certain necessity and with the utmost perfection." For Spinoza nothing happens by chance

Madan Mohan Verma A Dialogue with Truth. . . . The Wise Call It by Many Names

Today the world is witnessing greater conflicts among people of the same beliefs, religions, cultures, and ideologies. Many are fighting in the name of God and yet killing his people despite the fact that no religion flows from the barrel of a gun, and no sacred scriptures sanction the killing of the innocent in the name of God. In the face of such conflict, no religion can afford to overlook the spirituality and legitimacy of these truths.A Dialogue with Truth explores the way major world religions can have the potential to counteract the negative forces of conflict in the world and instead usher in an era of fellowship. Every religion advocates universal human values, and they each speak to a basic message for humankind—in fact, the origin and meaning of all prophetic revelation is the same, as these revelations have been revealed by God. Author Madan Mohan Verma shows how we can overcome conflict between religions by understanding each religion in its own distinctiveness and see its contribution to the unity of humankind. The foundations of a pluralistic society—its culture and its legal and educational systems—require an acceptance of universal human values derived from spiritual scriptures and human experience. Therefore, the path forward is one where we seek positive dialogue at all levels and appreciate each other’s points of view while upholding the spirit of oneness.

Kenneth Seeskin Maimonides on the Origin of the World

Although Maimonides' discussion of creation is one of his greatest contributions - he himself claims that belief in creation is second in importance only to belief in God - there is still considerable debate on what that contribution was. Kenneth Seeskin takes a close look at the problems Maimonides faced and the sources from which he drew. He argues that Maimonides meant exactly what he said: the world was created by a free act of God so that the existence of everything other than God is contingent. In religious terms, existence is a gift. In order to reach this conclusion, Seeskin examines Maimonides' view of God, miracles, the limits of human knowledge, and the claims of astronomy to be a science. Clearly written and closely argued, Maimonides on the Origin of the World takes up questions of perennial interest.Издательство: CambridgeАвтор: Kenneth Seeskin

Graham B. Usher Places of Enchantment - Meeting God in Landscapes

There is a great and honourable tradition of finding God in landscapes. Many people who have given up on church appreciate the spiritual benefits they gain from climbing a mountain or walking in nature. But how and why do we encounter God in land, forest, river, mountain, desert, garden, sea and sky? This captivating volume takes us from the giant redwoods of the Californian Sierra Nevada to the jagged New York skyline, and from the wilds of the ancient Scottish Highlands to the rolling pastures of English Shropshire. Drawing on material from biblical and church history traditions, as well as on scientific research and contemporary art, Graham Usher seeks to ascertain how experiencing God in the natural world supports the pilgrim's journey and challenges assumptions. Many of the landscapes celebrated appear in the cycle of themes for the Season of Creation in the four weeks leading up to the feast day of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October, and this book may be used as a resource for preachers and study groups during that period. More than anything, the author's desire is to encourage readers to look at the world with fresh eyes - and so be enchanted by the wonder of God all around us.

In this timely work, Michael Doe shows the rightful position of mission as the lifeblood of the Church, and shows how our understanding of it as Christians is crucial for what we present to the wider world. He considers the Anglican roots within the nature of mission, current tensions in the Church and how they relate to social engagement, the history of mission and Church structures. An underlying theme of this book is power; how power has been exercised in God's Church, and how it should be used in the Anglican Communion today. He questions how that relates to the way we understand power in the mission of God, and especially in what we see in Jesus Christ.

How much further should the affluent world push its material consumption? Does relative dematerialization lead to absolute decline in demand for materials? These and many other questions are discussed and answered in Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization. Over the course of time, the modern world has become dependent on unprecedented flows of materials. Now even the most efficient production processes and the highest practical rates of recycling may not be enough to result in dematerialization rates that would be high enough to negate the rising demand for materials generated by continuing population growth and rising standards of living. This book explores the costs of this dependence and the potential for substantial dematerialization of modern economies. Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization considers the principal materials used throughout history, from wood and stone, through to metals, alloys, plastics and silicon, describing their extraction and production as well as their dominant applications. The evolving productivities of material extraction, processing, synthesis, finishing and distribution, and the energy costs and environmental impact of rising material consumption are examined in detail. The book concludes with an outlook for the future, discussing the prospects for dematerialization and potential constrains on materials. This interdisciplinary text provides useful perspectives for readers with backgrounds including resource economics, environmental studies, energy analysis, mineral geology, industrial organization, manufacturing and material science.

Emmanuel Y. Lartey Postcolonializing God. An African Practical Theology

Postcolonializing God examines how African Christianity especially as a practical spirituality can be truly a postcolonial reality. The book offers thoughts as to how African Christians and by that token others who were colonial subjects, may practice a spirituality that bears the hallmarks of their authentic cultural heritage, even if that makes them distinctly different from Christians from the colonizing nations. There are themes in both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Scriptures in which God's activities result in shattering hegemony, overthrowing the powerful, diversifying communities and affirming pluralism. These have by and large been ignored or downplayed in the formation of Christian communities by western and westernized Christians in Africa. The effect of this is that much of the practice of African Christians imitates that of a European Christianity of bygone times. Postcolonializing God charts a different course uplifting these ignored readings of scripture and identifying how they are expressed again by Africans who courageously seek through the practices of mysticism and African culture to portray a God whose actions liberate and diversify human experience.Postcolonializing God seeks to express the human diversity that seems to be the Creator's ongoing desire for the world and thereby to continue to manifest the manifold and diverse nature and wisdom of God. It is only as humans refuse to be created in the image of any other human beings, that the r...

Robert Jensen Marketing Modernism in Fin-de-Siecle Europe

In this fundamental rethinking of the rise of modernism from its beginnings in the Impressionist movement, Robert Jensen reveals that market discourses were pervasive in the ideological defense of modernism from its very inception and that the avant-garde actually thrived on the commercial appeal of anti-commercialism at the turn of the century. The commercial success of modernism, he argues, depended greatly on possession of historical legitimacy. The very development of modern art was inseparable from the commercialism many of its proponents sought to transcend. Here Jensen explores the economic, aesthetic, institutional, and ideological factors that led to its dominance in the international art world by the early 1900s. He emphasizes the role of the emerging dealer/gallery market and of modernist art historiographies in evaluating modern art and legitimizing it through the formation of a canon of modernist masters. In describing the canon-building of modern dealerships, Jensen considers the new "ideological dealer" and explores the commercial construction of artistic identity through such rhetorical concepts as temperament and "independent art" and through such institutional structures as the retrospective. His inquiries into the fate of the juste milieu, a group of dissidents who saw themselves as "true heirs" of Impressionism, and his look at a new form of art history emerging in Germany further expose a linear, dealer- oriented history of moderni...

God is certainly not impressed by big numbers. Just ask Gideon, who defeated a vast Midianite army with only three hundred men. The fundamental lesson of the experience of Gideon for believers today is this: When it comes to communities of faith, God is only concerned about faithfulness and eff ectiveness. When we have a genuine relationship with God and an unshakeable trust in the power of the Holy Spirit of God, we are able to accomplish anything for the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is is why Jesus said, “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), and not, “Go into all the world, making big buildings and megachurches.” “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20, KJV). Believe it!

Thorsten Prill German Protestantism and the Spirit of God. From Luther to Moltmann

Document from the year 2010 in the subject Theology - Systematic Theology, grade: none, , course: Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: "In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen". For regular worshippers in German-speaking Lutheran and Reformed churches, these words spoken by the pastor are very familiar, as they mark the beginning of every Sunday service. With these words the pastor reminds the congregation in whose name they are gathered and whom they are called to worship. Later on in the service, the congregation is asked to stand and confess their faith with the words of the Apostle's Creed or, on special occasions, the Nicene Creed. Again, the third person of the Trinity is mentioned. However, in many German-speaking Lutheran and Reformed churches God often is not really worshipped as Trinity. God is presented and understood as God the Father and God the Son. In other words, there is an inadequate understanding of the triune God in mainstream German Protestant churches and a lack of emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit. This phenomenon is rooted in German Protestant theology and can be traced back through the ages and the theological schools to Reformation times.

The story of the Iliad centers on the critical events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilles's killing of Hektor and determine the fate of Troy. But Homer's theme is not simply war or heroism. With compassion and humanity, he presents a universal and tragic view of the world, of human life lived under the shadow of suffering and death, set against a vast and largely unpitying divine background. The Iliad is the first of the great tragedies.

Luc Ferry On Love. A Philosophy for the Twenty-First Century

All the great ideals that gave life meaning in earlier societies – God, the nation, revolution, freedom, democracy – are in disarray today, questioned by many and rejected by those who have lost faith in them. But there is another value, rooted in the birth of the modern family and in the passage from traditional to modern marriage, that has transformed our lives in profound and often unrecognized ways: love. It affects not only our personal lives but many aspects of our social and collective life too, from art and education to politics. In this book Luc Ferry shows how the quiet rise of love as the central value in modern societies has created a new principle of meaning and a new definition of the good life that requires a completely different kind of philosophical thinking. It forms the basis for a new philosophy for the twenty-first century and a new kind of humanism for the modern world – not a humanism of reason and rights, but a humanism of solidarity and sympathy. The ideal that this new humanism realizes is no longer that of nationalisms and revolutions, of the perpetrating of organized violence in the name of deadly principles that are pursued over and above humanity. Rather, it is about preparing and ensuring a future for those we love most: our future generations.

Occasionalism Revisited. New Essays from the Islamic and Western Philosophical Traditions

Occasionalism is commonly understood as a theory that ascribes all causal power to God, while treating cause-effect relations in nature as customary events or occasions determined by divine volition. Commonly misapprehended as originating in Western philosophy it already appears in the texts of Muslim scholars of the Ash¢arÏ and M¥turÏdÏ school in the 10th century, before being transmitted to Europe via the works of Averroes and Maimonides in the 13th century. Yet it was only in the 17th century among the Cartesian philosophers and most famously in the works of Nicolas Malebranche that the theory flourished and was taken seriously. Many of the great philosophers such as Gottfried W. Leibniz and David Hume authored their works in light of the occasionalist critique of other theories of causation, especially the much contested concept of natural causation as formulated by Aristotle. This book aims to reveal unexplored historical roots of occasionalism in the Islamic and Western traditions in an effort to contribute to the discussions centered around this theory. As an attempt to reveal the historical roots and philosophical dimensions of occasionalism, this volume illustrates the indispensability of this theory for those who want to understand the central discussions and dynamics within Islamic and modern philosophy. Apart fromshowing the significance of occasionalism in both traditions, this book drawsout the contours and the common ground for contemporary discussions on causat...

Rev. Clarence Larkin (1850–1924) was an American Baptist pastor, Bible teacher and author whose writings on Dispensationalism had a great impact on conservative Protestant visual culture in the 20th century. His intricate and influential charts provided readers with a visual strategy for mapping God's action in history and for interpreting complex biblical prophecies.Larkin's major publications were six: Dispensational Truth (or God's Plan and Purpose in the Ages); Rightly Dividing the Word; The Book of Daniel; Spirit World; Second Coming of Christ; and A Medicine Chest for Christian Practitioners, a Handbook on Evangelism.Dispensational Truth (or God's Plan and Purpose in the Ages), contains dozens of charts and hundreds of pages of descriptive matter. He spent three years designing and drawing the charts and preparing the text, which remains in print. It is a thoroughgoing defense of premillennialist dispensationalism that draws on the major themes found in the works of figures like C.I. Scofield, William Eugene Blackstone, and John Nelson Darby.Because ‘Dispensational Truth’ had a large and wide circulation, the first edition was soon exhausted. It was followed by a second edition, and then, realizing that the book was of permanent value, Larkin revised it and expanded it, printing it in its present form of over 300 pages. Larkin followed this with other books: Rightly Dividing the Word; The Book of Daniel; Spirit World; Second Coming of Christ; and A Medic...

The resurrection accounts are not only about God's triumph over evil and death. They are also stories of encounter with God - the recovery of that ancient intimacy briefly enjoyed in the Garden of Eden. This absorbing volume, which includes some of the author's own poetry and reflective pieces, suggests that in entering into the resurrection stories from the Gospels, we step outside time and place into a strange and wonderful world where death no longer holds sway. Here we meet a wounded God, scarred with the marks of crucifixion - a risen Christ, in whom God once more becomes familiar. And through the wonderful intimacy we are able to enjoy with this truly close yet ever mysterious God, we gain the energy and courage to strive to establish his topsy-turvy kingdom on this, his own dear earth.

If we allow it, the Bible speaks to us - just as God speaks to us; for it is the voice of God to those who know their God and know the ways of their God. As the voice of our God - the one who brought us into this world - and the one who will take us out of this world; can we leave unturned any pebble of knowledge or wisdom that voice may offer to us? Or, are we to be open to all that God may put before us - in plain speech - and in the deeper, fuller speech of symbolism in his Holy Word?

God has sent on earth prophets to teach men the prescription of happiness. This alchemy may be briefly described as turning away from the world to God, and its constituents are the knowledge of self., the knowledge of God, the knowledge of this world as it really is, and the knowledge of the next world as it really is."This man, if ever any have deserved the name, was truly a 'divine,' and he may be justly placed on a level with Origen, so remarkable was he for learning and ingenuity, and gifted with such a rare faculty for the skilful and worthy exposition of doctrine. All that is good, noble, and sublime that his great soul had compassed he bestowed upon Muhammadanism, and he adorned the doctrines of the Koran with so much piety and learning that, in the form given them by him, they seem, in my opinion, worthy the assent of Christians. Whatsoever was most excellent in the philosophy of Aristotle or in the Sufi mysticism he discreetly adapted to the Muhammadan theology; from every school he sought the means of shedding light and honour upon religion; while his sincere piety and lofty conscientiousness imparted to all his writings a sacred majesty. He was the first of Muhammadan divines." -- Dr. August Tholuck
