Sukeerthi Nittoor Land Information System as a Tool for Urban Planning

Urban areas are growing at a very fast pace. Hence, Planning, development and management of urban areas, especially in the developing countries gain prime importance.Accuracy of the information is the prime requirement for Planning, development and management of the land parcels especially in the urban areas where the land is scarce. Hence there is a need to organize spatial information system for urban planning and management. A land information system gives support to land planning and management by providing information about the land, the resources upon it and the improvements made to it. Already existing Information systems like National Urban Information System (NUIS), Land Management Information System (LMIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure(SDI) has been studied and found to be devoid of certain information for effective utilization.Hence an Integrated Information System with comprehensive land information system has been developed for urban planning, development and management at different Planning Levels. In addition, a plot level L.I.S has been generated in Geographical Information System (GIS) platform for effective implementation.

Md. Mizanoor Rahman, Jayant K. Routray Peri-Urban Economic Transformation of Bangladesh

The book focuses on issues and challenges of economic transformation of the peri-urban area around Rajshahi city of Bangladesh. Peri-urban area is the transitional zone between an urban and its nearby rural area. Characteristically, the area is neither urban nor rural but it gradually attains urban characteristics and spatially shifts from urban to rural area. As a result, the economic setting in term of occupation, income, expenditure capacity, land use, land value, infrastructure, living facilities etc. of the dwellers of this area changes rapidly. And this changing process becomes influenced by a number of factors like location, distance from urban center, road network, transportation system, marketing network, employment opportunities, governmental policies and planning and so on. Though, the urban areas have development plan but due to week implementation of plan a haphazard urban growth can be found that reduces the actual competency of the area. So, it is necessary to implement the existing development plan and initiate integrated rural-urban development plan for better, planed and furnished urban development in Bangladesh.

Gilberto Cysneiros Filho Software Traceability for Multi-Agent Systems Implemented Using BDI Architecture (vol. 1)

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Software, City University London, course: Computer Science, language: English, abstract: The development of multi-agent software systems is considered a complex task due to (a) the large number and heterogeneity of documents generated during the development of these systems, (b) the lack of support for the whole development life-cycle by existing agent-oriented methodologies requiring the use of different methodologies, and (c) the possible incompleteness of the documents and models generated during the development of the systems. In order to alleviate the above problems, in this thesis, a traceability framework is described to support the development of multi-agent systems. The framework supports automatic generation of traceability relations and identification of missing elements (i.e., completeness checking) in the models created during the development life-cycle of multi-agent systems using the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) architecture. Traceability has been recognized as an important activity in the software development process. Traceability relations can guarantee and improve software quality and can help with several tasks such as the evolution of software systems, reuse of parts of the system, validation that a system meets its requirements, understanding of the rationale for certain design decisions, identification of common aspects of the system, and analysis of implications of chan...

Diploma Thesis from the year 1999 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 1, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, language: English, abstract: The following thesis elucidates the impact of the product design and the product development process on the design of a manufacturing system. In contrast to integrate constraints and restrictions of the manufacturing system and its processes into the initial design of a product , attributes and characteristics of the product design are analyzed by the way they influence and restrict the design of a manufacturing system. The upcoming hypothesis of this thesis claims latter approach to be the natural and logical one. A sophisticated design theory known as Axiomatic Design [Suh 1990] is used to embed the design of a manufacturing system into the design of the product and the product development system. The generic derivation of such an integrated design framework will allow a broad application to manufacturing and product development system design. The following paragraph outlines the background and the issues related to the motivation for this thesis. In the next step, the thesis objectives and hypothesis are stated, marking the scope and content of this academic discussion. Finally, a brief overview is provided about the content and structure of each chapter.

Charles F. Haanel The Master Key System

First published as a 24-week correspondence course in 1912, and then as a book in 1916, Charles F. Haanel’s “The Master Key System” is a classic work of self-empowerment. A principal text of the New Thought movement, “The Master Key System” describes how one can use the law of attraction to creatively visualize a better life for oneself. As Haanel describes in his introduction to the “The Master Key System”, “Nature compels us all to move through life. We could not remain stationary however much we wished. Every right-thinking person wants not merely to move through life like a sound-producing, perambulating plant, but to develop—to improve—and to continue the development mentally to the close of physical life. This development can occur only through the improvement of the quality of individual thought and the ideals, actions and conditions that arise as a consequence. Hence a study of the creative processes of thought and how to apply them is of supreme importance to each one of us. This knowledge is the means whereby the evolution of human life on earth may be hastened and uplifted in the process.”

The field of Urban Dynamics itself is based on the systems engineering concept that all complex systems (and cities and urban areas are no exception) are comprised of independent and often smaller, more understandable sub-components with relationships to one another. This allows for the system as a whole to be modeled, using knowledge of the individual subsystems and their behaviors. In this instance, urban dynamics allows for the modeling and understanding of land use, the attractiveness of space to residents, and how the ageing and obsolescence of buildings affects planning and economic development, as well as population movements, with the urban landscape. The book adopts a trans-disciplinary approach that looks at the way residential mobility, commuting patterns, and travel behavior affect the urban form. It addresses a series of issues dealing with the accessibility of urban amenities, quality of life, and assessment of landscape residential choices, as well as measurement of external factors in the urban environment and their impact on property values.

The global economic crisis of 2008 was precipitated by a housing market crash, thus highlighting the destabilizing influence of the property cycle upon the wider economy. This timely book by a world authority explores why cycles occur and how they affect the behaviour of real estate markets. The central argument put forward is that growth and instability are inextricably linked, and that building investment acts both as a key driver of growth and as the source of the most volatile cyclical fluctuations in an economy. The role of building cycles in both economic growth and urban development is explored through a theoretical review and a comparative historical analysis of UK and US national data stretching back to the start of the nineteenth century, together with a case study of the development of London since the start of the eighteenth century. A simulation model of the building cycle is presented and tested using data for the City of London office market. The analysis is then broadened to examine the operation of property cycles in global investment markets during the post-war period, focussing on their contribution to the diffusion of innovation, the accumulation of wealth and the propagation of market instability. Building Cycles: growth & instability concludes by synthesizing the main themes into a theoretical framework, which can guide our understanding of the operation and impact of building cycles on the modern economy. Postgraduate students on courses in property and in urban development as well as professional property researchers, urban economists and planners will find this a stimulating read – demanding but accessible.

This book describes how the entrenched power of global elites has created a deadly cycle of violence, enacted through the Military Industrial Complex.Vijay Mehta shows how attempts at peaceful national development, environmental sustainability and human rights are routinely blocked by Western powers. He locates the 2008 financial crisis in US attempts to block China's model of development. He shows how Europe and the US conspire with regional dictators to prevent countries from developing advanced industries, and how this system has fed terrorism. The Economics of Killing argues that a different world is possible, based on policies of disarmament, demilitarisation and sustainable development.

Urban design enables better places to be created for people and is thus seen in Urban Design in the Real Estate Development Process as a place-making activity, rather than the application of architectural aesthetics. Urban design policy can change the 'decision environment' of developers, financiers, designers and other actors in the real estate development process to make them take place-making more seriously. This book reports diverse international experience from Europe and North America on the role and significance of urban design in the real estate development process and explores how higher quality development and better places can be achieved through public policy. The book is focused on four types of policy tool or instrument that have been deployed to promote better urban design: those that seek to shape, regulate or provide stimulus to real estate markets along with those aim to build capacity to achieve these. Urban design is therefore seen as a form of public policy that seeks to steer real estate development towards policy-shaped rather than market-led outcomes. The editors set the examples, case studies and evidence from international contributors within a substantive discussion of the impact of urban design policy tools and actions in specific development contexts. Contributions from leading urban design theorists and practitioners explore how: Masterplanning and infrastructure provision encourage high quality design Design codes reconcile developers' needs for certainty and flexibility Clear policy combined with firm regulation can transform developer behaviour Intelligent parcelisation can craft the character of successful new urban districts Powerful real estates interests can capture regulatory initiatives Stimulus instruments can encourage good design Development competitions need careful management Design review can foster developer commitment to design excellence Speculative housebuilders respond in varied ways to the brownfield design challenge Physical-financial models could help in assessing the benefits of design investment Urban design can add value to the benefit of developers and cities as a whole.

LEAN Healthcare InnovationThe American healthcare system is under siege. For a high quality, open access system that emphasizes patient freedom of choice to survive, it must change. This book presents the argument for why a variant of the Toyota Production System, LEAN Healthcare Innovation, may be the answer to save US healthcare. This is a modification of LEAN that provides a better opportunity for success through a focus on system management, cultural transformation, personal development of the staff with a focus on innovation. The evidence to support this approach includes a review of successes and failures of prior improvement, change and LEAN efforts in healthcare. Details are provided regarding Leadership, management and organizational staff’s impact on the successes and failures of prior improvement and change efforts. Specific insights for future success include Leadership “standard work”, A new formula for determining the probability for successful change, a new definition of waste in healthcare, a new definition for successful patient outcomes and a new model for organizational change. The critical concepts of cultural change, team approaches, “a questioning culture” and the importance of personal change related to future success in organizational activities are presented. The epilogue includes an assessment of the current and predicted state for US healthcare and the argument for making the decision to implement the program, which is supported by evidence of how L...

This paper addresses the development of an average value based model, for the network dynamics of a predominantly scattered and geographically dependent consumer distribution system. The continuous observation of the load currents in three different phases of distribution transformers, fixation of its average values on real time basis, mathematical model development with the above average value as base factor are the basic steps of this method, which subsequently leads to a time based dynamics. The validation of the so developed model is done by experimenting in a working system.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, grade: 74, University College London, language: English, abstract: This research explores the role of identity and cultural heritage in urban regeneration strategies and the conflicts caused by urban development projects that impact negatively on the local identity of the city. This study analyses from the perspective of heritage and identity, two interventions in the city of Valparaiso in Chile, which cause conflict between the state and the civic society. It establishes the importance of governance and civic society participation in the use of heritage for contemporary purposes, and discusses the problematic of the institutional and policy framework in the creation of strategies coherent with the local culture. This research analyses the case study of the city of Valparaiso, a city facing a longterm economic decline that was declared World Heritage Site in 2003 as part of the strategies to revitalize the city and improve its economy. The development strategies that were established to improve the economic potential of Valparaiso, have found themselves in conflict with what is argued to be the identity of the city. This identityis tightly connected to the origins of the city, but it seems difficult to engrain within development strategies. The identity of Valparaiso as a city port is connected to its origin; Valparaiso first was a port and then was a city...

Massimo Santanicchia An Ordinary Small City. An examination on Reykjavik.s current and realizable urbanism

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: Distinction, London School of Economics, course: Urban and Regional Planning, language: English, abstract: Small cities (less than 500,000 inhabitants) host fifty-two percent of the world urban population, yet they are profoundly neglected in the urban studies field. This research focuses on the small city of Reykjavík (118,326 inhabitants), and investigates how the planning system is trying to build a new urban strategy away from the world city model which was adopted until the banking collapse of 2008. The results reveal that the city is going through a cultural renaissance animated by a multitude of small events, enhancements of the public realm, grassroots initiatives and a more fruitful collaboration between planning authorities and citizens. At the same time the new Reykjavík master plan currently under discussion is prioritising growth scenarios affiliated with big-iconic developments. This dissertation concludes that the planning system needs to support a more responsive, integrated and holistic urbanism at a regional and governance level. It should support a politics of small things, protecting the human scale, the sense of place, and diversity, by enhancing the endogenous resources and developing processes of participation in the city making which are the bases of the reconstruction of trust, self-confidence and citizenship.

HOPSCA is a form of mixed use planning born out of the China development boom of the 1990s. HOPSCA is an acronym for Hotels, Offices, Parks, Shopping, Convention centres and Apartments. The concept of HOPSCA is gaining recognition as a legitimate planning tool outside of China. It has been in use since the 1990s and favoured by architects and urban designers worldwide.HOPSCA differs from Master Planning, TOD, traditional CBD (Central Business District) models, New Urbanism and Smart Growth in distinct ways. HOPSCA was driven by an identified market niche to co-locate specific uses: These uses are desirous to co-locate because of their compatibility. The thesis proposes to consider how HOPSCA could be realized in South East Queensland under current legislation. Further the paper will discuss the desirability of creating a 'city within a city' and its relevance and application in the Australian context. The research for the thesis will be undertaken between July and October 2014 with delivery on or before 29th October 2014.

Dagnachew Adugna Belete Urban Drainage Management in Mekelle, Ethiopia. Part-I

Proper urban drainage management is core to safely discharge flood generated within an urban area or from external source in to final receiving systems or to encourage on-site infiltration. With urban development flood hazard increases due to imperiousness and this reduces the infiltration capacity of a land. Similarly with the foundation of Mekelle city, flood generation became a core problem as a result of deforestation and impervious structures. According to various studies, urban storm water drainage facilities provision in it had started with road construction. Since then the municipality has tried its best to provide drainage facilities in different periods of time. But, generally, urban storm water drainage management in the city is very minimal. Because of this land degradation, river bank erosion, urban utilities degradation, natural water ways pollution and siltation and related problems are common phenomenon. The conventional way of urban drainage management is also the other problem to manage storm water in the city. That is why, this study has given a due attention to find out what real problems exist in managing the drainage system. This study is Road-map to Part-II

Jennifer Sault Arthur of Britain. Universal Archetype for Healthy Chakra Development

Myths are our collective dreams, our inspiration and our aspiration; they are the sacred stories that guide us in living a conscious life. One of the most beloved myths of the West is that of King Arthur and his Companions of the Round Table, and we find in this work that the spiritual teachings embodied in this myth are the same as those of the chakra system of the East. Both map the development of human consciousness from conception to self-realization. Arthur of Britain transports us to the landscape and the time of King Arthur while opening our hearts to the power of myth to transcend time and space. A retelling of some of the legends correlates the events of Arthur's life with the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual challenges that he, and we, encounter at each chakra. Guided meditations use the archetypal symbols in the myth to help us negotiate those challenges, and bring into consciousness the wisdom and self-healing power that we all carry within. This work is a valuable contribution to both the spiritual and mythological literature as it provides a bridge between the two and highlights the similarities, rather than the differences, of diverse traditions. Also, this book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Fan Bai Collaboration Support for the Distributed Development of Ontologies

The development of ontologies which aims at capturing knowledge as a formal structural framework, is an important foundation for a wide range of applications. Since ontology development is usually a collaborative activity which may span a long period of time, it is critical to provide developers with a suitable development environment that supports collaboration in a flexible manner and that facilitates the building of robust and accurate ontologies. In this dissertation, the author focusses his effort on providing an easy-to-use collaborative ontology development environment that supports both synchronous and asynchronous collaborative activities. Two prototype systems were developed to reach the goal based on an extensive requirement study. The first prototype system servers numerous functions in supporting synchronized cooperation. A Java based application provides developers with several functions. For example, with the help of group-awareness and a locking mechanism, involved developers become aware of actions from other users, which enables them to work without conflict in terms of editing the same ontology resources.Based on the experiences gathered from implementing the first prototype system, the requirement of supporting asynchronous cooperation was studied. A version control system especially in the fields of coping with ontology data structure is a central component to satisfy the requirement. This second approach primarily supports local workspaces that can be syn...
