Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: In this study, the relationship between collective teacher effectiveness and school improvementoriented culture is investigated through the case of ABC Secondary School. Collective teachereffectiveness is conceptualized with both the model of total teacher effectiveness and the model ofcontinuous learning. Collective teacher effectiveness is regarded as the primary goal the school strives toattain. On the other hand, school improvement oriented culture, which consists of an emphasis onlearning, collegiality and collaboration, is regarded as the value system of the school. Moreover, thetheoretical framework of this study includes characteristics of teachers (gender, age, and full-timeteaching experience) and the practices of academic divisions (the frequency and contents of formalmeetings, the encouraged activities, and the opportunities to participate in the decision-making process). The research findings support the conceptions of collective teacher effectiveness and schoolimprovement oriented culture. The results show that school improvement oriented culture, in general, caused collective teacher effectiveness directly and indirectly. Particularly, each cultural element haddifferent influential powers to collective teacher effectiveness, competence and performance. The notion of culturally relevant leadership learning builds upon the ideas of developing leader identity and leadership capacity of diverse students. Focusing on four areas of leadership learning: education, training, development, and engagement, this volume presents a model of culturally relevant leadership learning in order to develop all student leaders. It proposes infusing the leadership development process with an understanding of how systemic oppression influences educational contexts and with an engagement in and across cultural differences. Our contexts and differences influence knowledge of self, others, cultural contexts and systems, and ultimately students’ knowledge and enactment of leadership. To this end, culturally relevant leadership development programs equip all students with the knowledge and skills to navigate diverse settings and lead culturally diverse groups and teams. Transforming the framework for how leadership programs are designed will result in contextually relevant leadership development programs and an increase in the breadth and depth of a diverse leadership cadre for our society. The Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Leadership explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to high school and college leadership educators. Issues are grounded in scholarship and feature practical applications and best practices in youth and adult leadership education.

Cultural Competence in America's Schools: Leadership, Engagement and Understanding focuses on explicatingthe impact of culture and issues of race and ethnicity on student learning, teacher and leadership efficacy, andeducational policy making in our nation's public school system. The authors agree with Levin (2012), whopointed out that the challenge of dealing effectively with racial and ethnic diversity in education in traditionallyhomogeneous societies is a global problem. One indicator of this point is revealed in a U.S. study that was commissionedby the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, which reported on the serious consequencesfor student achievement and teacher effectiveness in the face of "the gap between teacher training andthe realities of the classroom when it comes to teaching diverse populations and students with special needs."(Public Agenda, 2008, p. 2).

Education systems can be centralised or decentralized. When an education system is centralised, broad policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures are centrally determined. As a result, school based interpretation of the policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures become crucial. Successful curriculum implementation therefore depends to a large extent on the teachers. As the key actors in curriculum implementation, teachers know what works best in the teaching and learning process. This then calls for high teacher participation in school based interpretation of the guiding frameworks. In this book an investigation into teacher involvement in curriculum implementation decisions at primary school level is presented. The findings revealed gaps in teacher involvement and recommendations point towards the need for deliberate full engagement of teachers since they are key implementers of the curriculum.

A primary predictor of whether students will become successful adults is whether they graduate from high school. Few institutions have a greater impact on the quality of American life than the public secondary schools, the foundation for adult participation in society and the workplace. One of the great challenges facing American public schools is the improvement of urban education

It employed the critical paradigm to examine the teachers' motivational levels and job satisfaction as members of the decision-making processes in the case study school. Therefore, this study used five semi-structured interviews on five randomly selected participants who gave the qualitative data analyzed. The coding of the gathered data identified five key themes analyzed in section 4. The findings indicate that the participants unequivocally challenged the hierarchical leadership style witnessed in the country's public schools since they feel that they are oppressive in nature and demean the teachers' opinions leading to teachers' frustration in the teaching profession and poor schools academic performance. Consequently, this study proposes the distributed leadership form to enable teachers to develop a sense of ownership, responsibility, collaboration, and fulfilled life that arises from being part of the decision-making process in their school.

Fueled by sweeping federal education accountability reforms, such as the United States' No ChildLeft Behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top (R2T) and Australia's Performance Measurement and Reporting Taskforce, school systems around the world are being forced to increase academic standards, participate in high-stakes testing, andraise evaluation standards for teachers and principals. Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on schoolmathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions theteacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much moreoriginate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude inhow they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materialsmay differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that canimprove their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationshipbetween curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

The author investigated the perceptions of elementary public school principals on the value of teacher read-alouds in primary-grade classrooms. Participants were 209 public school principals from the state of Georgia who responded to a web-based survey. The author obtained data regarding the demographic profile of respondents' school and district, the professional experience of the respondents, and the respondent's perceptions of the value of read-alouds for development of literacy skills and the benefits of teacher read-alouds for specific sub-groups of students. Results suggested that the majority of principals surveyed not only value teacher read-alouds for literacy instruction and for specific sub-groups of students, but that most are cognizant of the impact teacher read-alouds can have on the development of literacy skills and are familiar with the components of effective teacher read-alouds.

Discusses and analyzes current state of leadership; discourses that inform and shape leadership literature, what practices leaders engage in, mistakes they make and why, and what the institution of leadership has come to become in our age. The study aims to offer a contemporary, yet retrospective critique of leadership. The intent is to illustrate the parochial nature of influential literature on the subject as well to highlight the discrepancies between the discourses on the subject, and their actual enactment. We intend to provide a comprehensive understanding of the notion of leaders and leadership from a more socio-economic perspective. It is hoped that this work stimulates a constructive debate on the role leaders play in our society; the relationship between leaders and ordinary people; and how does it impact our society.

Linking Leadership to Student Learning Linking Leadership to Student Learning clearly shows how school leadership improves student achievement. The book is based on an ambitious five-year study on educational leadership that was sponsored by The Wallace Foundation. The authors studied 43 districts, across 9 states and 180 elementary, middle, and secondary schools. In this book, Kenneth Leithwood, Karen Seashore Louis, and their colleagues report on what they found. They examined leadership at each organizational level in the school system—classroom, school, district, community, and state. Their comprehensive approach to investigating school leadership offers a balanced understanding of how the structures within which leaders operate shape what they do. The results within will have significant implications for future policy and practice. Praise for Linking Leadership to Student Learning «Kenneth Leithwood and Karen Seashore Louis offer a seminal new contribution to the leadership field. They provide a rich and authoritative evidence base that demonstrates clearly just why school leadership is so important and how it promotes successful student learning.»—Pamela Sammons, Ph.D., Professor of Education, Department of Education, University of Oxford, Oxford «This ambitious, groundbreaking, and thought provoking treatment of the link between school leadership and student learning is a testament to the outstanding work of these exemplary scholars. This book examines the impact of high school theatre on developing adolescents making the transition into adulthood. The participants in this study were graduates of a private urban high school in the mid-west, aged from 18 to 34. This is a qualitative study using in-depth interviews as the primary research tool and the methodology of portraiture to frame the interviews. The primary research question is: How do high school graduates describe their experience in high school theatre? The theoretical basis for this study is constructivist, and includes Dewey’s concept of art as “experience,” Bruner’s emphasis on “meaning-making” and Erikson’s work in the human life cycle. The emerging data illustrates how graduates construct meaning in numerous social, psychological, artistic, and spiritual ways.

We began, prompted by the late Chris Gonnet, Superintendent of Grande Prairie Public Schools, to explore the question 'What Makes a Great School?'in December 2010 at a meeting in Boston. We concluded that it involved many inter-connected elements, but that the key components were focused teacher leadership enabled by being empowered and resourced to make a difference. Rethinking Leadership sees evidence-informed practice as the fulcrum point for leveraging school improvement, especially if it systematically supported within a systematic way at the jurisdiction and provincial levels to build school leadership capacity. We also concluded that the framing conditions for the work of the school - the provincial/ state policies, curriculum requirements, financial arrangements, assessment regimes as well as the policies of school boards and districts - either enables or impairs the ability of a team within the school to create a great school for all students.

In our fast changing world the traditional church is in decline. Congregational churches across the west continue to report fewer Sunday attendees and decreased engagement across programs and services. In its decline a new kind of church has emerged, that of Fresh Expressions. A Fresh Expression of Church aims to reach those who are not connected to the church. This thesis explores and evaluates how a Fresh Expression: big, small, rural or urban, can become sustainable through diverse approaches to Leadership, Discipleship, Evangelism and Finances.Effective leadership is integral to the health and sustainability of any Fresh Expression. Different styles of leadership are needed in different situations. While there is often a place for a primary leader, teams and collaboration are of great importance for sustainability, and assist in keeping a church’s vision alive. Analysis and decision making around different types of leaders and different styles of leadership is important including collaborative, transitional, and successional leadership needs. The wider church also has a role in assisting Fresh Expressions to become sustainable by offering guidance in getting the right person in the right placement and determining the type of placement be that lay, ordained, fully paid by the church, bi-vocational or starting an entrepreneurial activity to generate income. This process also fosters links between a Fresh Expression and the Inherited church. For a church to effectively discip...

This third book in the Information Age book series, International Research on School Leadership, focuses onthe changing nature of instructional leadership in the 21st century. Our goal is to examine instructionalleadership from multiple educational and international perspectives. Unlike many leadership books that focuson conceptualizations and personal narratives, the seven chapters provide empirical evidence of howinstructional leadership is evolving in the 21st century. From the effective schools research of the 1980s totoday's relentless calls for improved student performance, attention has focused on the instructional leadership roles and responsibilities of schoolprincipals, headteachers, and educational system leaders. The emphasis on student performance has gone global as evidenced by highly-publicizedinternational studies, such as the Trends in International Math and Science Studies (TIMSS) and the Program for International Student Assessment(PISA), comparing student achievement in different countries. These developments have had substantial effects on school leaders, especially building-level principals and headteachers. Rather than being the onlyones overseeing school improvement aimed at increasing student learning, many school administrators are distributing leadership responsibilities toother administrators and teachers on their campuses. Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: School inspection is one of the most challenging aspects in education; it represents an approach of accountability in teaching and learning. Moreover, school inspection provides policy and decision makers with accurate information about the current state of education in their respective institutions. The main purpose of this study is to examine and determine the impact of school inspection on teaching and learning in Dubai-based private schools, and to give some recommendations into how to conduct effective school inspection that would positively influence teaching and learning.
