Micha Neumann The Relationship between C. G. Jung and Erich Neumann Based on Their Correspondence

With the rise of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist Party in Germany, Erich Neumann, who had just finished his medical studies, was forbidden, as were all his Jewish colleagues, from completing his final practicum year and obtaining his medical degree. He took his small family and left Germany in 1933 to work with C. G. Jung in Switzerland. In 1934, young Micha and his mother immigrated to Palestine, and Erich followed them several months later. He established himself as a Jungian analyst and began writing in German about his Jewish experience and Jungian ideas, while keeping up a lifelong correspondence with Jung.Micha Neumann, himself a psychiatrist, offers us a personal glimpse into the complicated relationship between his father, Erich Neumann, and C. G. Jung. Whereas Freud was the elder in his relationship with Jung, in the relationship between Jung and Erich Neumann, Jung was the elder. Micha Neumann, who learned of the letters only after both his parents were gone, comments: "I remember how my father spoke about Jung, whom he adored and loved. When I read the correspondence between them, I could compare the father-son relationship between Jung and Neumann, which was very fruitful and positive, where Freud's attitude toward his young disciple Jung was negative and castrating."Based on the letters of Jung and Neumann, which have been recently published, along with the impressions Micha Neumann gleaned from his parents, this book provides a framework for ...

C. G. Jung, son of a Swiss Reformed pastor, used his Christian background throughout his career to illuminate the psychological roots of all religions. Jung believed religion was a profound, psychological response to the unknown--both the inner self and the outer worlds--and he understood Christianity to be a profound meditation on the meaning of the life of Jesus of Nazareth within the context of Hebrew spirituality and the Biblical worldview. Murray Stein's introduction relates Jung's personal relationship with Christianity to his psychological views on religion in general, his hermeneutic of religious thought, and his therapeutic attitude toward Christianity. This volume includes extensive selections from Psychological Approach to the Dogma of the Trinity," "Christ as a Symbol of the Self," from Aion, "Answer to Job," letters to Father Vincent White from Letters, and many more.

Between the years 1906 and 1912, Jung practiced as a psychoanalyst, and his association with Freud was very close. Though their personal relationship became strained after the publication of Jung's book, Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido (1911-12), Jung continued to serve as president of the International Psychoanalytic Association until 1914. The present volume covers the period of Jung's close and enthusiastic collaboration with Freud and includes one of Jung's famous studies in word association which demonstrates Freud's influence even before they were working together.Originally published in 1975.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This comparative study of the basic concepts of Freud and Jung is designed to give a comprehensive understanding of Jung's work. The author traces the development of Jung from his initial fascination with Freud's ideas to his gradual liberation from these powerful concepts and the final breakthrough into his own unique theories of man and the cosmos. Jung's fundamental view -- that the psyche is a totality of conscious and unconscious elements that seeks to realize itself -- stands in sharp contrast to Freud's early view of the psyche as primarily the effect of prior causes. Hence Freud tends to stress the pathological, whereas Jung looks to the creative and self-transcending aspects of human nature. The final section of the book describes the development of Jung's ideas after the death of Freud, particularly his concept of the archetypes.

2016 Reprint of 1922 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The book illustrates a theoretical divergence between Jung and Freud on the nature of the libido, and its publication led to a break in the friendship between the two men, both stating that the other was unable to admit he could possibly be wrong. According to Jung, his work is an "extended commentary on a practical analysis of the prodromal stages of schizophrenia" (Jung, [1956] 1967: xxv). The analysis is of the Miller Fantasies. These are fantasies of Miss Frank Miller, an American woman Jung did not know, whose writings he had encountered in the work of Théodore Flournoy. In “Psychology of the Unconscious,” Jung seeks a symbolic meaning and purpose behind a given set of symptoms, placing them within the larger context of the psyche. The text examines the fantasies of a patient whose poetic and vivid mental images helped Jung redefine libido as psychic energy, arising from the unconscious and manifesting itself consciously in symbolic form. Jung's commentary on his patient's fantasies offers a complex study of symbolic psychiatry and foreshadows his development of the theory of collective unconscious and its constituents, the archetypes.

Until 1912 the association of Jung and Freud was very close, and Jung was regarded as one of the leading practitioners of psychoanalysis. Subsequently, however, Jung began to differ with Freud, and his public criticism of psychoanalysis led to a formal rupture between them. The papers in this volume contain the essentials of that criticism, especially "The Theory of Psychoanalysis," a lecture series given at Fordham University in 1912. Two later papers-"Freud and Jung: Contrasts" and the introduction to a book by W. M. Kranefeldt-together form a basis for further study of Jung's reassessment of psychoanalysis.Originally published in 1976.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. At least three major questions can be asked of myth: what is its subject matter? what is its origin? and what is its function? Theories of myth may differ on the answers they give to any of these questions, but more basically they may also differ on which of the questions they ask. C. G. Jung's theory is one of the few that purports to answer fully all three questions. This volume collects and organizes the key passages on myth by Jung himself and by some of the most prominent Jungian writers after him: Erich Neumann, Marie-Louise von Franz, and James Hillman. The book synthesizes the discovery of myth as a way of thinking, where it becomes a therapeutic tool providing an entrance to the unconscious. In the first selections, Jung begins to differentiate his theory from Freud's by asserting that there are fantasies and dreams of an "impersonal" nature that cannot be reduced to experiences in a person's past. Jung then asserts that the similarities among myths are the result of the projection of the collective rather than the personal unconscious onto the external world. Finally, he comes to the conclusion that myth originates and functions to satisfy the psychological need for contact with the unconscious--not merely to announce the existence of the unconscious, but to let us experience it.

This edited collection of Civil War correspondence between Col. Thomas Cahill and his wife, Margaret, offers a rare glimpse into the symbiotic relationship between soldiers and their home communities. In the only substantial extant collection of letters from an Irish American woman on the northern home front, Margaret's pivotal role as a go-between in the financial affairs of men in the regiment and their wives is made evident, as is the broader interplay between the community of New Haven, Connecticut, and the regiment. The couple's correspondence was nearly constant in their four years apart. There is an inherent intimacy in the way that daily life during the Civil War is documented and in particular in the gradual revelation of the emotional toll taken by a long-distance relationship. Because the volume includes letters from both Cahill and his wife, the interplay between the regiment and the home front is traced in a way most collections are not able to achieve. This lively correspondence provides a great introduction to primary source reading for students of the Civil War home front. These teaching opportunities will supplemented by a companion website that features more correspondence, maps, and additional learning materials.

In the 1930s C. G. Jung embarked upon a bold investigation into childhood dreams as remembered by adults to better understand their significance to the lives of the dreamers. Jung presented his findings in a four-year seminar series at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Children's Dreams marks their first publication in English, and fills a critical gap in Jung's collected works. Here we witness Jung the clinician more vividly than ever before--and he is witty, impatient, sometimes authoritarian, always wise and intellectually daring, but also a teacher who, though brilliant, could be vulnerable, uncertain, and humbled by life's great mysteries. These seminars represent the most penetrating account of Jung's insights into children's dreams and the psychology of childhood. At the same time they offer the best example of group supervision by Jung, presenting his most detailed and thorough exposition of Jungian dream analysis and providing a picture of how he taught others to interpret dreams. Presented here in an inspired English translation commissioned by the Philemon Foundation, these seminars reveal Jung as an impassioned educator in dialogue with his students and developing the practice of analytical psychology. An invaluable document of perhaps the most important psychologist of the twentieth century at work, this splendid volume is the fullest representation of Jung's views on the interpretation of children's dreams, and sign...

If one schematically compares the three principal tendencies in psychotherapy (Freudian, Jungian, Adlerian) with regard to the direction in which their central thought leads, one could say:-The analytical method of Sigmund Freud looks for the causae efficientes, the causes of the later behavioural disturbances. Alfred Adler considers and treats the initial situation with regard to a causa finalis and both see in the drives the causae materiales. In Carl Gustav Jung's case the term 'synthesis' is based on his abandonment of the causal thinking of the alternative psychological methods of treatment. Jungian psychotherapy, therefore, is not an analytical procedure in the usual meaning of this term. Whatever the differences among Freud's, Jung's and Adler's extensive works on the therapeutic methodologies; scientists, artists, thinkers and practitioners accept the great importance of Adler's, Freud's and Jung's studies for medicine, psychology, anthropology, religion, art, history, literature, etc.

In 1906, after he had become senior staff physician and before his first meeting with Freud in Vienna in 1907, Jung wrote his famous monograph "On the Psychology of Dementia Praecox." Ernest Jones described it as "a book that made history in psychiatry and extended many of Freud's ideas into the realm of the psychoses proper." A. A. Before this essay, Freud was understood to have placed the sexual instinct, Eros, centre stage, in explaining the forces which drive us to act. In 1920, going "beyond" the simple pleasure principle, Freud developed his theory of drives, by adding the death instinct, often referred to as Thanatos, although Freud himself never used this term. The main importance of the essay resides in the striking picture of human beings struggling between two opposing instincts or drives: Eros working for creativity, harmony, sexual connection, reproduction, and self-preservation; Thanatos for destruction, repetition, aggression, compulsion, and self-destruction. Freud also took the opportunity to state the basic differences, as he saw them, between his approach and that of Carl Jung, and covered the history so far of research into the basic drives.

A Jew in a violently anti-Semitic world, Sigmund Freud was forced to cope with racism even in the "serious" medical literature of the fin de siècle, which described Jews as inherently pathological and sexually degenerate. In this provocative book, Sander L. Gilman argues that Freud's internalizing of these images of racial difference shaped the questions of psychoanalysis. Examining a variety of scientific writings, Gilman discusses the prevailing belief that male Jews were "feminized," as stated outright by Jung and others, and concludes that Freud dealt with his anxiety about himself as a Jew by projecting it onto other cultural "inferiors"--such as women. Gilman's fresh view of the origins of psychoanalysis challenges those who separate Freud's revolutionary theories from his Jewish identity.

For some scholars, this book marks little but a mental decline in the great philosopher; for C. G. Jung, Zarathustra was an invaluable demonstration of the unconscious at work, one that illuminated both Nietzsche's psychology and spirituality and that of the modern world in general. The original two-volume edition of Jung's lively seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra has been an important source for specialists in depth psychology. This new abridged paperback edition allows interested readers to participate with Jung as he probes the underlying meaning of Nietzsche's great work.

Considered by many to be one of the most important books in the field of psychology, Modern Man in Search of a Soul is a comprehensive introduction to the thought of Carl Gustav Jung. The writing covers a broad array of subjects such as gnosticism, theosophy, Eastern philosophy and spirituality in general. The first part of the book deals with dream analysis in its practical application, the problems and aims of modern psychotherapy, and also his own theory of psychological types. The middle section addresses Jung's beliefs about the stages of life and Archaic man. He also contrasts his own theories with those of Sigmund Freud. In the latter parts of the book Jung discusses psychology and literature and devotes a chapter to the basic postulates of analytical psychology. The last two chapters are devoted to the spiritual problem of modern man in aftermath of World War I. He compares it to the flowering of gnosticism in the 2nd century and investigates how psychotherapists are like the clergy.

For C. G. Jung, 1925 was a watershed year. He turned fifty, visited the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and the tribesmen of East Africa, published his first book on the principles of analytical psychology meant for the lay public, and gave the first of his formal seminars in English. The seminar, conducted in weekly meetings during the spring and summer, began with a notably personal account of the development of his thinking from 1896 up to his break with Freud in 1912. It moved on to discussions of the basic tenets of analytical psychology--the collective unconscious, typology, the archetypes, and the anima/animus theory. In the elucidation of that theory, Jung analyzed in detail the symbolism in Rider Haggard's She and other novels. Besides these literary paradigms, he made use of case material, examples in the fine arts, and diagrams.

There exists, of course, few more famous figures in the field of psychology than Sigmund Freud. As the founding father of psychoanalysis, or the clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, his impact on the field of psychology cannot be understated. Based on a series of lectures given at the University of Vienna in 1915, "Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis" builds upon Freud's earlier work "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis" to provide a comprehensive overview of the pioneer's work in the field of psychoanalysis. G. Stanley Hall describes in his preface that "these twenty-eight lectures to laymen are elementary and almost conversational. Freud sets forth with a frankness almost startling the difficulties and limitations of psychoanalysis, and also describes its main methods and results as only a master and originator of a new school of thought can do. These discourses are at the same time simple and almost confidential, and they trace and sum up the results of thirty years of devoted and painstaking research." A must read for those interested in the field of psychology and Freud's contribution to it.

C. G. Jung has been and continues to be a pervasive yet often unacknowledged presence in twentieth-century art and intellectual life. This timely volume is the first comprehensive attempt to assess this presence and to demonstrate Jung's far-reaching cultural impact. The distinguished contributors represent a number of views, from traditional Jungian to the most contemporary post-Jungian stances, including feminist, non-Jungian, and anti-Jungian positions. Jung, as seen in this volume, addresses a wide range of contemporary issues related to creativity, gender, religion, popular culture, and hermeneutics. The essays reveal dimensions of his work that extend far beyond psychoanalytical theory and that show his hermeneutics to be a much more subtle and sophisticated methodology than previously allowed by his critics. This methodology appears, in fact, to have anticipated significant aspects of contemporary critical principles and practice. The contributors to the volume were among the participants in a major international conference sponsored by Hofstra University and the C. G. Jung Foundation of New York, held in 1986 at Hofstra University. They include Thomas Belmonte, Robert Bly, Joseph Campbell, Edward S. This is Volume One of two volumes of Letters from and to the Scottish antiquary Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe (1781-1851), as first published in 1888.The material includes family letters, letters received by Sharpe from friends and society acquaintances, and his own correspondence as recorded in a note-book of 1810 to 1815.The earlier letters relate to Sharpe's fifteen years in Oxford and the ones after 1813 to his life in Edinburgh, where he devoted himself to literary, artistic and antiquarian pursuits. The editor, Allardyce, suggests that Sharpe's biography is written in his correspondence. Certainly the Letters both chronicle the development of his interests, particularly in Ballads, the Arts and Witchcraft, and furnish evidence of Sharpe's reputation for caricature and satire, a weakness for scandal, and an 'affection for archaism'. As well as his mother and sister, notable correspondents in this first volume include Walter Scott, Earl Gower, Keppel Craven, Elizabeth Craven, R.H Inglis, E.B. Impey and Lady Charlotte Campbell. The volume also contains a 'Memoir' which introduces the letters; notes on the correspondence with Lady Charlotte Bury; the 1803 satirical 'Address to the People of Dumfriesshire'; and an Index. The illustrations include several reproductions of Sharpe's own drawings and etchings.

"In the threatening situation of the world today, when people are beginning to see that everything is at stake, the projection-creating fantasy soars beyond the realm of earthly organizations and powers into the heavens, into interstellar space, where the rulers of human fate, the gods, once had their abode in the planets.... Even people who would never have thought that a religious problem could be a serious matter that concerned them personally are beginning to ask themselves fundamental questions. Under these circumstances it would not be at all surprising if those sections of the community who ask themselves nothing were visited by `visions,' by a widespread myth seriously believed in by some and rejected as absurd by others."--C. G. Jung, in Flying Saucers ? Jung's primary concern in Flying Saucers is not with the reality or unreality of UFOs but with their psychic aspect. Rather than speculate about their possible nature and extraterrestrial origin as alleged spacecraft, he asks what it may signify that these phenomena, whether real or imagined, are seen in such numbers just at a time when humankind is menaced as never before in history. The UFOs represent, in Jung's phrase, "a modern myth."

There exist, of course, few more famous figures in the field of psychology than Sigmund Freud. As the founding father of psychoanalysis, or the clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, his impact on the field of psychology cannot be understated. This short work "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis" is a series of lectures given at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts during September 1909. "Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis" which predates the more extensive work "Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis" is an excellent introduction to Freud's work in which he summarizes his ideas and speaks on the foundations of psychoanalysis.

For the most part, the majority of historians draw no distinction between William Czar Bradley and his father, Stephen Rowe Bradley. One circumstance that contributes to the total lack of information on William Czar Bradley is that most of his contributions are attributed to his father. In January of 1813, Senator Stephen Rowe Bradley retired from the Senate and returned to Westminster, withdrawing completely from politics. Congressman William Czar Bradley made his appearance in Washington, D.C., at this same time to serve the first of three non-consecutive terms as a representative of Vermont. All of William's speeches in Congress are labeled in the Annals of Congress and all other publications as those of "Mr. Bradley." The correspondence and speeches preserved in this book are evidence of William Bradley's rightful place in our nation's history. The letters comprising The Bradley Family Papers date from 1774 to 1900 and are not all of the Bradley correspondence. They were assembled into a collection because the originals are scattered throughout numerous libraries. Ninety-six presidential letters and twenty letters between Secretary of State John Q. Adams and William Bradley are included in this collection. In addition to the letters, background and biographical information on William Czar Bradley is provided by Richards Merry Bradley's "Bradley Essay," with a postscript by Dorr B. Carpenter; Sara Bradley Kellogg Willard's "A Tribute...

A fresh and intriguing perspective on men's behavior, attitudes, and psychological difficulties by tracing the development of masculinity within the context of concept of the anima, C. G. Jung's term for a man's inner nature. Drawing on evolution, anthropology, and mythology, Dr. Pedersen shows how this mysterious "other" part of man's nature influences his psychological and spiritual growth.

Sigmund Freud, Joan Riviere Civilization and Its Discontents

2016 Reprint of the American Edition of 1930. In this seminal book, Sigmund Freud enumerates the fundamental tensions between civilization and the individual. The primary friction stems from the individual's quest for instinctual freedom and civilization's contrary demand for conformity and instinctual repression. Many of humankind's primitive instincts (for example, the desire to kill and the insatiable craving for sexual gratification) are clearly harmful to the well-being of a human community. As a result, civilization creates laws that prohibit killing, rape, and adultery, and it implements severe punishments if such commandments are broken. This process, argues Freud, is an inherent quality of civilization that instills perpetual feelings of discontent in its citizens.

Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe Letters from and to Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe Esq., (1888) Volume II

2777 руб.
This is Volume Two of two volumes of Letters from and to the Scottish antiquary Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe (1781-1851), as first published in 1888.The material includes family letters, letters received by Sharpe from friends and society acquaintances, and his own correspondence as recorded in a note-book of 1810 to 1815.The editor, Allardyce, suggests that Sharpe's biography is written in his correspondence. Certainly the Letters both chronicle the development of his interests, particularly in Ballads, the Arts and Witchcraft, and furnish evidence of Sharpe's reputation for caricature and satire, a weakness for scandal, and an 'affection for archaism'. This second volume opens in Hoddam Castle, 1812, in the period preceding CKS's move to Edinburgh, where he was to devote himself to a life of literary, artistic and antiquarian pursuits. Correspondence continues with the Lord Gower (later the Duke of Sutherland), Lady Gwydr, Lady Charlotte Bury, Walter Scott, Robert Chambers and many others - painting a vivid picture of intellectual, political and society life throughout Europe, as viewed from Edinburgh. All peppered with frequent references to the difficulties of travel, illness and household trivia. The volume closes in 1850, amid concerns for the great collection which CKS had by this time amassed. The illustrations include several reproductions of Sharpe's own drawings and etchings.

This edition of Letters from a Stoic, otherwise known as Epistulae Morales Ad Lucilium contains the three volumes of correspondence between the elderly Greek Stoic Seneca and the young Lucilius Junior. Each of the one hundred and twenty-four letters touches on a wide range of topics from a happy life to the moral one. These letters, while addressed to a particular indivual, were clearly written to be read by a much wider audience, and indeed, this book is an excellent introduction to Seneca’s thought and to stoic philosophy.

This latest volume of H. P. Lovecraft’s complete unabridged correspondence is unique in that it contains a substantial amount of letters by one of his most distinctive later colleagues—the weird writer C. L. Moore, whose stories mingling fantasy and sexuality were among the most striking contributions to Weird Tales in the 1930s. Lovecraft’s letters to Moore survive only fragmentarily, but Moore wrote more than 60,000 words of letters to Lovecraft, and these are now published for the first time, revealing a vivid imagination and keen analytical mind who held her own in debates with her older colleague. Lovecraft introduced Moore to her future husband and writing partner, Henry Kuttner, whose own brief correspondence is included here. Fritz and Jonquil Leiber were already married when Jonquil wrote to Lovecraft, as Fritz was too shy to approach him. There ensued a lively correspondence with both individuals that lasted less than a year, but was filled with profound discussions of the nature of weird fiction. Lovecraft wrote a long, detailed letter analyzing Leiber’s early novella “Adept’s Gambit,” and Leiber revised the story accordingly. Lovecraft also engaged in a short correspondence with Harry O. Fischer, who initially collaborated with Leiber in conceiving the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series of fantasy tales. This volume also prints the complete letters to a little-known correspondent, Frederic Jay Pabody. These letters have surfaced only recently, and they show Lovecraft a...
