By "learning"', we mean a process by which we obtain a model of a phenomenon using data measured on it. We focus on system identification and time series modelling, and our work is naturally slightly influenced by this concern. We will for example evoke only regression estimation, and no classification problem. However, most theoretical and practical aspects presented herein can easily be adapted. We study neural networks models. This research has traditionally been linked to computer science and artificial intelligence. In the last few years however, two distinct lines of thoughts seem to diverge: the first one stays close to the biological origins of the term - we will call it "neuro-biological"; the second considers neural networks as a model, and studies them from a statistical point of view. Our work concerns the second of these lines. Furthermore, we try to stay independent of any specific application, and keep a general approach to neural networks. We attempt to exhibit the links between neural networks and statistics, and show that neural computation can be naturally placed in the realm of traditional statistics. Classifiers are becoming an important component of today software. The capability of automatic learning from examples is essential in tasks where classification rules are not easily obtainable. Artificial Neural Networks, the main argument of this book, are an important example of classifiers for their versatility and recognition accuracy. To improve their classification performance the easiest way is to enlarge the training databases. Unfortunately, this method leads to training times too much long. Advancing the capabilities of the human brain in terms of power to benefit society and improve people's lives has become a topic of increasing value and interest to social psychologists. This research, limited to a literature review and a number of face to face interviews with psychology students to add some contemporary perspectives, investigated how increases in brain power could be achieved and what the potential benefits could be to social psychologists. Results suggest that short term brain power increases can be achieved through the application of low risk neurocognitive approaches such as brain training and by consuming natural brain foods and nutritional brain drugs. Infra-red laser stimulation of certain parts of the human brain not only increases cognitive brain power permanently but has the potential to reduce or eliminate brain diseases such as dementia and autism. Caution should be exercised to maintain the humanity element of what makes people human prior to engaging in long term brain power increase activities.
