Data was collected through a survey using a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 160 questionnaires were sent to top and middle level managers employed in 21 food and beverage companies operating in Sri Lanka. 120 questionnaires were returned, all of which were usable. In a next step, the questionnaires were coded into SPSS version 21 for Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results from this study indicate that market orientation has a positive impact on business performance of organizations operating in the food and beverage industry in Sri Lanka. Moreover, the results reveal that customer orientation has a positive significant impact on business performance. Sriyantha Fernando An Assessment of the Impacts of Tourism in Sri Lanka

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Tourism, Griffith University, course: PhD, language: English, abstract: After the end of nearly three decades of civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka is experiencing a tourism boom with a record level of international tourist arrivals. The Sri Lankan government has now identified tourism as a main component in its post-war development strategy. Despite this new policy enthusiasm there is dearth of research on tourism in Sri Lanka. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to contribute to the literature on tourism in Sri Lanka in a number of ways. First, it provides a systematic historical narrative on Sri Lankan tourism and explains how Sri Lanka missed opportunities in the past. Second, it develops a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model focusing on tourism and constructs a database with an emphasis on tourism. Third, it examines the economy-wide effects of the post-war tourism boom in Sri Lanka.

A. A. Milne Winnie-the-Pooh in Sinhalese A Translation of A. A. Milne.s Winnie-the-Pooh into Sinhalese

Winnie-the-Pooh in SinhaleséWinnie-the-Pooh is the most popular children's book in the world. This is the first translation of Winnie-the-Pooh into Sinhalese, the language of Sri Lanka. We believe the reason Winnie-the-Pooh has not caught on in Sri Lanka is there are no bears in Sri Lanka. Winnie-the-Pooh is most popular in countries where there are a lot of bears, such as Russia. Sinhalesé is a language spoken by 18 million people. Sinhalese is also called Singhala, Singhalese and Cingalese. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages.Sinhalese is one of the official and national languages of Sri Lanka. Sinhalese played a major role in the development of Theravada Buddhist literature. Sinhalese is only spoken in Sri Lanka. However, a million Sinhalese speakers have gone to Middle Eastern countries such as Dubai and Saudi Arabia as workers. This may have an impact. One of my daughters is a fluent speaker of Sinhalese because she learned it from our domestic servants while she was a child. If you want to hear Sinhalese spoken, go to the movies “Elephant Walk” starring Elizabeth Taylor or “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. There you can also see lots of Sri Lankan elephants, which are larger than Indian elephants with a head with bumps shaped differently than Indian elephants. It is believed that elephants came to Sri Lanka before humans did.The purpose of this book is to help Sinhalesé speakers learn English and to help English speakers learn...

Susan Muthalaly Tamil Identity in Cinema During War and Conflict

This book studies the representation of identity politics in the Indian Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal, which deals with the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict. Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.

Sri Lanka has had almost 30 years of war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan government. The island is very segregated into clearly different ethnic and religious groups. Very little contact takes place between the different groups and the prejudices between them have been built up for a long time and are hard to change. The focus in this research is the youth movement Sri Lanka Unites (SLU) and their vision and actions of bringing youth together from different backgrounds and geographical locations in Sri Lanka. The aim with this study is to gain understanding of the change agents' experiences and attitudes regarding the reconciliation initiatives provided by Sri Lanka Unites. Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: 88.8, , course: M.A. International Relations, language: English, abstract: There have been series of attempts to resolve the civil war peacefully by political arrangements until the Rajapaksa regime decided to declare war against LTTE in 2006. The first peace rounds were marked by Bandaranaike and Chelvanayagam in 1957. The Senanayake- Chelvanayagam peace talks in 1965 followed by Round Table conference 1983, All Party conference 1984, Thimpu Bhutan talks in 1985, Political Parties conference of 1986, Indo Sri Lanka Accords, All Party Conference of 1989, Dialogue with the LTTE in 1990, Select Committee of Parliament, Jaffa Peace talks of 1995 and Ceasefire agreement and peace talks in 2001. The entire peace process in Sri Lanka failed in finding a political solution to the ethnic conflict. Particularly, the Indo- Sri Lanka Peace Accords and the 2002 Peace process were able to gain international attention. However, the failure of the peace process changed the political map of Sri Lanka in a larger context. The failure of 1987 and 2001 peace activities problematized the international involvement in the peace process in Sri Lanka. With these contextual annotations, the author looks at the catastrophe of the peace process of Sri Lanka through two case studies: 1987 Indo- Sri Lanka Peace Accords and 2002 Peace rounds. Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: Sri Lanka's alcohol production and consumption have grown rapidly and more than 75 percent of the government's revenue, from alcohol taxes and levies, comes from arrack production. Hard liquor consumption is relatively high in Sri Lanka compared with the global trend, as well. Illegal alcohol (mainly known as Kasippu) consumption in Sri Lanka is popular among people because it is cheaper. In the second half of this paper, various definitions on poverty and its measurements are briefly discussed in order to emphasise that the term 'poverty' is not merely a lack of income, and to broaden the term's connotations. This chapter also serves to highlight the fact that poverty is a complex phenomenon with various social, health and economical influences. Following a survey of definitions of poverty and description of poverty measurements, this chapter provides an overview of global trends in poverty and poverty in Sri Lanka. Although the aggregate poverty rates declined in the world, the number of poor people has increased in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa continents. Compared to the other South Asian countries Sri Lanka has had better living conditions. There is a declining trend in poverty in Sri Lanka. However, the income inequality has grown in Sri Lanka in recent years as it has been in the South Asian region.

On the one hand two similar theories about regional power and small state behaviour in the face of a civil conflict in the small state by Benjamin Miller are taken out of their original context1 and applied to the case of Sri Lanka. In constituting India as the regional power and Sri Lanka as the small state in these scenarios, it can be examined whether this case can be seen as in accordance with Miller's theories in the main points, and maybe even help to understand the processes around the Indo-Sri Lankan accord better. India will be checked according to its capabilities and interests in the region, which will show, if India's peace keeping role was actually motivated mainly by a regional hegemonic ambition? And the question will be raised, if Sri Lanka accepted the accord out of its own will, or due to Indian dominace? The second theoretical approach is the Two Level Games Theory by Robert ...

Present study examines the morphology of Sri Lankan plant fossil of Bennettitales with the type specimens in the Natural history museum UK and details in the literature and systematically documents their diversity for assessing palaeo-environmental significance. Plant fossil-bearing mudstones of Jurassic age are present in a small faulted basin within the Precambrian basement rocks at Tabbowa, in the north western province of Sri Lanka. The present study reveals that fossils of plant species Ptilophyllum, Otozamites, Pterophyllum, Zamites, Dictyozamites of the order Bennettitales of Jurassic period are present in the Tabbowa sedimentary rocks, comparison with type-specimens of the Jurassic species confirms their unique and similar palaeo-environment prior to fragmentation of the Gondwanaland. Since there are no previous detailed morphological descriptions available for the Sri Lankan plant fossils comparing the features of type specimen, we consider that present descriptions provide specific details of Jurassic fossils of Sri Lankan Cycadophyta, facilitating work of future investigators.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, , course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Special Degree in English Studies, language: English, abstract: The present thesis is an attempt to recognize the sociolinguistic prestige of Received Pronunciation (RP) in contemporary Sri Lankan society, using attitudes, perceptions, and practices of habitual English users in Sri Lanka. Since this study approaches RP from a number of dimensions that are vital in a sociolinguistic study of an accent, this plurality of dimension is reflected in its methodology. The research methods are (a) an attitudinal survey; (b) a series of semi-structured interviews; (c) Observation of participants' behaviour during interviews; and observation of RP used by Sri Lankans.RP's prestige has not changed radically even after 64 years of independence from colonial rule, despite the burgeoning discussion on the suitability of the home-grown standard of English at academic and policy levels. However, Sri Lankan English has surpassed RP as the descriptive standard ,that is, the standard sanctioned by actual use despite RP's continuous role as the prescriptive and the imagined standard, which is accorded more prestige. The residual sociolinguistic prestige of RP is initially examined as a matter of language ideologies surrounding the English language as well as language in general. Subsequently, the discussion focuses on the British-orientation of ...

Further, the differences of humanitarian logistics and commercial logistics will be analyzed based on the previous discussed definition. In order to do so, the disaster relief response and its potential for improvement will be segmented and analyzed in three phases consisting of preparation, immediate response and reconstruction. Insufficiencies of every phase will be explained. While researching for this paper it became obvious that the risk of a tsunami was neglected in terms of preparation. During the phase of immediate response, deficiencies concerning cooperation and coordination led to insufficiencies in the d...

Eva Maria Kreibohm The Performance of Socially Responsible Investment Funds in Europe

Socially responsible investing (SRI) is an investment approach that combines investors' financial as well as nonfinancial goals in the security selection process. Technically, investors can engage in SRI either by directly investing in companies that implement corporate social activities or by investing their money in SRI funds, which apply screening criteria to select securities. The screening process applied by the SRI funds has led to controversy among academics regarding whether the use of SRI screens in the security selection process influences the financial performance of the funds. The empirical study analyzes whether or not the screening process applied by such funds influences their financial performance. Previous research mostly has focused on analyzing the performance of SRI equity funds established in the United States. The study at hand not only includes SRI equity funds, but also SRI balanced and fixed income funds established in Europe, the biggest market for SRI globally. The study provides unexpected results that are not only of interest for investors, who want to get a better understanding of the effect on the financial performance of their portfolios in case SRI funds are added. The results are also relevant for SRI fund managers, who are interested in promoting their funds and attracting (new) investors, and for academics, whose research interests are e. g., located in the fields of SRI, fund portfolio performances and market efficiencies.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich BWL - Unternehmensführung, Management, Organisation, Note: 1,7, FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management gemeinnützige GmbH, Köln, Veranstaltung: Soft Skills & Leadership Qualities, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The nuclear disaster in Fukushima Daiichi, Japan may be one of the worst natural disasters in Japans history ever and after Hiroshima in 1945 and Chernobyl in 1986 the third worst nuclear disaster in human history. What is called "3/11" is comprised of three temporally sequenced and causally linked but analytically separable disasters. On 11th March 2011 a Richter scale 9 earthquake occurred, with its epicentre 100km off the northeast coast of Japan. It was followed by a giant tsunami. The quake and tsunami caused a massive amount of damage and resulted in considerable loss of life. It also destroyed the reactor cooling system of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex, which led to massive explosions and the release of radioactive materials into the environment. In today´s rapidly changing environment, management personnel, whether in companies, in non-profit organizations or within governmental departments, are constantly confronted with decision problems with far-reaching consequences. This assignment will explain the terms of the decision-making process as well as characteristics of disasters by transferring it on the Fukushima Daiichi disaster in 2011.Besides the introduction and the objectiv...

James A. Mitchell But for the Grace. Profiles in Peace from a Nation at War

This is the story of the orphans and elders at Grace Care Center, a residence for the displaced in Sri Lanka's impoverished, war-torn northeast - the story of Sri Lanka itself: Girls made orphans by a war that sometimes recruits children for battle; the destitute seniors whose aging eyes saw a nation tear itself, and their families, apart. Established by an American attorney during a lull in the decades-long fighting, Grace Care Center offered shelter from war, support against poverty, and hope against an uncertain future. December 2004 brought yet another challenge - the Indian Ocean tsunami. Brief hope that the resulting devastation would inspire opposing sides to join forces in response to the disaster ended with a return to war. More determined than ever, the Grace community and their American friends worked for a simple dream: That ethnic groups victimized and divided by war can live together in peace; that destitute seniors deserve to live in dignity; and that children need not grow up in violence.Grace Care Center is the story of hope in a land of tragedy. It's a special place; all the more precious considering what life is like, but for the Grace, beyond its walls."[The book] gives the best account I have read anywhere of the brutality of abduction and life in an LTTE training camp for child soldiers. The best thing ... is that it is not judgemental. It graphically conveys to us all the horrors of war without feeling the need to point fingers. " - From ...

This book provides detail information about the KAP level of female adolescents on SRH in Rural Communities of Srilanka. It is of high interest to get to know the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) level and health seeking behavior of adolescents and to see how they deal with the respective health problems, particularly in rural Sri Lanka. The lack of adequate information sources, self awareness among adolescents and access to services in the community are the main determinants for the low KAP level among adolescents with regard to RH-related issues. The unavailability of specific ARH service centers were found to be one of the main factors affecting adolescents' health service seeking behavior in these areas. Similarly, doubt of breaking confidentiality when visiting the facility and receiving services were prevailing. This is another discouraging factor for Adolescents' SRH seeking practice. Due to the unavailability of friendly health services, constantly existing traditional beliefs and social norms and the lack of sensitivity toward SRH among parents, adolescents are being discouraged to visit HF.

Evidence mounts concerning potential events such as global warming and the effects this may have worldwide. Avian Flu remains a concern as do forms of biological terrorism and natural hazards such as tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. The 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and Thailand continues tohave a significant impact on that area of the world. How do communities and first responders handle these? What role does mental health play? How do first responders and mental health professionals plan together for responding to future events and learning from past ones. Using a strategic planning approach, how do we identity potential threats and identify target populationsand groups? What resources are available for which identified threats? How do we do such planning, how often, and how do we exercise such plans prior to events? Robin Kyte-Coles set out to document images of the Buddha and Buddhist symbols throughout Asia. This aesthetic and mystic journey took him to remote spots in Vietnam, Laos, Camhodia, Thailand, Burma, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka. Taken using as little Hash as possible, the resulting images are spellbinding—a symphony of glowing earth and golden hues. As we browse this series of compelling photographs, we can't help but absorb some of the meditative calm at the heart of Buddhist practice. Upali Sedere .Feminization. of Teaching Profession in Sri Lanka

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

Simon Simonse Kings of Disaster. Dualism, Centralism and the Scapegoat King in Southeastern Sudan

This is the long awaited, revised and illustrated edition of Kings of Disaster, the study of the Rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan that is in many ways a breakthrough in anthropological thinking on African political systems. Taking his inspiration from René Girard’s theory of consensual scapegoating, the author shows that the longstanding distinction of states and stateless societies as two fundamentally different political types does not hold. Centralized and segmentary systems only differ in the relative emphasis put on the victim role of the king as compared with that of enemy. Kings of Disaster thus proposes an uninvolved solution to the vexed problem of regicide.

Makhanu Ferdinand, Byaruhanga John, Were Edmond MSEs. Perception and Assessment of Disaster Impact on Sustainability

The book examines the owner-managers' perception and assessment of disaster risk impact on micro and small enterprises (MSEs) ' sustainability in rural- urban set up of a developing economy in Africa. It notes that entrepreneurial traits greatly influence risk decisions by micro and small entrepreneurs across gender. However, four cluster traits found outstanding were commitment, determination and perseverance; drive to achieve/succeed; calculated risk taking and risk seeking together with self-confidence & optimism. Further, it notes that demographic characteristics that significantly influence micro and small entrepreneurs' perception of disaster risks were age, ethnicity, training and education. However, on gender basis, women entrepreneurs were keener on risks before investing as opposed to male entrepreneurs. This is attributed to their being in business due to necessity and not because there is an opportunity as is the case for male entrepreneurs. Moreover, several sources of information and approaches blended to inform micro and small entrepreneurs' assessment of risks affecting their enterprises.

Bishwajit Prasad Spectral Reflectance Indices in Wheat Breeding

Complementing breeding effort by deploying alternative methods of identifying higher yielding genotypes in a plant breeding program is important for obtaining greater genetic gains. Spectral reflectance indices (SRI) are one of the several indirect selection tools that have been reported to be associated with many physiological processes of different crop species. The value of SRI as a plant breeding tool for yield improvement has not been well established. Therefore, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential use of SRI as a plant breeding tool for yield improvement using breeding populations and released cultivars of wheat. Association between grain yield and SRI, biomass and SRI, heritability of the SRI and yield, response to selection and correlated response, relative selection efficiency of the SRI, and efficiency in selecting the higher yielding genotypes by the SRI are discussed. The findings should help wheat breeders to utilize SRI as an indirect selection tool for yield improvement.

The authors establish vibro-impact dynamics as a subset of the theory of discontinuous systems, thus enabling all vibro-impact systems to be explored and characterized for applications. Vibro-impact Dynamics presents an original theoretical way of analyzing the behavior of vibro-impact dynamics that can be extended to discontinuous dynamics. All topics are logically integrated to allow for vibro-impact dynamics, the central theme, to be presented. It provides a unified treatment on the topic with a sound theoretical base that is applicable to both continuous and discrete systems Vibro-impact Dynamics: Presents mapping dynamics to determine bifurcation and chaos in vibro-impact systems Offers two simple vibro-impact systems with comprehensive physical interpretation of complex motions Uses the theory for discontinuous dynamical systems on time-varying domains, to investigate the Fermi-oscillator Essential reading for graduate students, university professors, researchers and scientists in mechanical engineering.

The research began by looking into the trends of homicide rates during the pre-1800 era and the post-1800 era to see if the rates are on the change or consistent. Demo data was collected using a few techniques and proxy in order to make the, complete. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to determine their trends. A t-test was also carried out to examine the relationship between the dependent variable (homicide rate) and the independent variable p2029, p2034, m2029 and m2034). A regression analysis was then carried out on the homicide rate to find out the relationship between the hr and young share and young male share of 2 age groups. From the regression models, it was found out that age group 2029 shows higher effect in OLS than FE while age group of 20 to 34 age group shows the opposite. Moreover, age group of the 20 to 29 age group has more than twice high impact on homicide rates than that of age group 20-34. On the other hand, male share of age group of 20 to 29 age group has the greatest impact. Finally, the male share of age group 2034 is only statistically significant in FE.

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. There are a number of reasons for global climate change, examples of which include the increased intensity of solar energy or the cyclicality of Earth's temperatures, volcanism, oceanic circulation cycles, biosphere impact, ultraviolet radiation variability, reflectivity, rotational variation, solar systemic changes, galaxy positional variability, albedo, human influence and so on. The present research analyse on the impact of climate change on major crops in Tamil Nadu. It is observed from the study more that there is no impact of climate change on major crops. The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

World of Populations. Transnational Perspectives on Demography in the Twentieth Century

Demographic study and the idea of a “population” was developed and modified over the course of the twentieth century, mirroring the political, social, and cultural situations and aspirations of different societies. This growing field adapted itself to specific policy concerns and was therefore never apolitical, despite the protestations of practitioners that demography was “natural.” Demographics were transformed into public policies that shaped family planning, population growth, medical practice, and environmental conservation. While covering a variety of regions and time periods, the essays in this book share an interest in the transnational dynamics of emerging demographic discourses and practices. Together, they present a global picture of the history of demographic knowledge.

An essential guide to the foundations, research and practices of community disaster resilience Framing Community Disaster Resilience offers a guide to the theories, research and approaches for addressing the complexity of community resilience towards hazardous events or disasters. The text draws on the activities and achievements of the project emBRACE: Building Resilience Amongst Communities in Europe. The authors identify the key dimensions of resilience across a range of disciplines and domains and present an analysis of community characteristics, networks, behaviour and practices in specific test cases. The text contains an in-depth exploration of five test cases whose communities are facing impacts triggered by different hazards, namely: river floods in Germany, earthquakes in Turkey, landslides in South Tyrol, Italy, heat-waves in London and combined fluvial and pluvial floods in Northumberland and Cumbria. The authors examine the data and indicators of past events in order to assess current situations and to tackle the dynamics of community resilience. In addition, they put the focus on empirical analysis to explore the resilience concept and to test the usage of indicators for describing community resilience. This important text: Merges the forces of research knowledge, networking and practices in order to understand community disaster resilience Contains the results of the acclaimed project Building Resilience Amongst Communities in Europe – emBRACE Explores the key dimensions of community resilience Includes five illustrative case studies from European communities that face various hazards Written for undergraduate students, postgraduates and researchers of social science, and policymakers, Framing Community Disaster Resilience reports on the findings of an important study to reveal the most effective approaches to enhancing community resilience.
