Lucienne Reinhold Age Diversity - a management approach against the background of demographic changes

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: The topic of age and employment is increasingly becoming relevant due to discussions regarding the future of the working society in Germany as well as against the background of demographic changes. These emerging demographic trends, characterized by a declining birth rate, a greater share of older people and an increasing life expectancy, lead to a future lack of younger employees, growing age diversity within the company as well as to older customers and employees. In order to maintain and improve their position in an increasingly competitive market, companies will need to bring instrategies and competencies that allow them to equally develop, remain and use the potentials of all age groups in the company.Up to now, companies have not sufficiently recognized and used the economic potential that in particular their older employees can contribute to the working processes. On the contrary, the up to now existing legal simplification of early retirement together with false prejudices about the achievement potential connected with age discrimination have led to the dismissal of especially older employees in cases of necessary restructuring measures connected with staff reduction. The fact that the older employees' potentials in combination with the potentials of the younger employees in the sense of a ...

An employee's-eye view of what makes a great boss—and how you can become one Whereas most books on managing people approach the subject from the perspective of a manager of an idealised organisation, Becoming a Better Boss takes a real-world approach, looking at the topic from the perspective of an employee in a real-world organisation—dysfunctions, warts, and all. Focusing on the choices individual employees make every day in getting work done, this book reinvents the practice of management one employee at a time. Author Julian Birkinshaw stresses the importance of taking management seriously, reveals where management practice often goes wrong, and dives deeply into the worldview of employees. He then explores the common personal biases and frailties of managers and discusses the vital importance of experimentation to overcome the limitations and idiosyncrasies of a particular organisation. Throughout, he supports his assertions with case studies from a wide and varying range of management experiments and situations at real companies. Written by a leading authority on strategy, management, and innovation who is also the author of eleven books, including Reinventing Management Introduces a new approach to management focused on real employees and actual situations Includes case studies from real organisations Between the stress of deadlines and the demands of today's business environment, it's easy for managers to lose sight of the importance of people management. Becoming a Better Boss not only shows managers how to lead effectively, but why doing so is vitally important to every organisation's success.

Therefore, it is important to identify and motivate high potentials in order to retain them in the company. Primarily, this concerns the highly dedicated staff, but also the tacit knowledge of the employees that is not explicitly written down. The author starts with the introduction to the subject, and the exemplification of the problem. Moreover, the objectives are presented, and a demarcation issue is set. Then, it is shown how a simple method can identify high potentials. Chapter three describes the proper motivation of A-staff on the basis of a case study. The following chapter investigates the way to keep the previously identified employees in the company in order to exploit the existing potential, and further presents the top 10 employee retention tools. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Excellent, , language: English, abstract: Business ethics is a matter of increasing importance and public awareness. Recent scandals and the financial crisis have suggested that the standard of business ethics is not high and that corporate behaviour should not solely be oriented to profit goals. Rather, a firm's ethical conduct should be part of its focus. While discussions of ethical questions in a market economy are mainly related to large firms, this thesis specifically aims at revealing potential problem issues and solutions for small firms. These firms are often ignored when moral concerns in business are addressed. This is in contrast to their importance for the economy and society of almost every country of the OECD, as they constitute the majority of all companies, and provide a major share of jobs. The majority of the studies examining business ethics are focused on large corporations, using quantitative strategies. Few studies related to small business have been undertaken. The question of how these firms and their owner-managers could systematically engage in business ethics and ethical stakeholder management remain unanswered. The thesis develops a tool which explicitly addresses this topic: the Ethics Integration Guideline. On the basis of a research paradigm of constructivism, a study was designed which was intended to elici...

The starting point is a recognition that HRM practice and firm performance are influenced by a variety of institutional arrangements that extend beyond the firm. The consequences of HRM need to incorporate analysis of employees and other stakeholders as well as the implications for organizational performance.

In the case that a firm correctly takes two cultures into account it can achieve higher returns and effectively perform in the intercultural context.

Monica Lapkoff The Change in the Social Contract Between the Employer and Employee

Over the past decade, Americans have been impacted by significant changes in the workplace. The research problem addressed in this book was whether there was a resulting change in the social contract and a lessoning of commitment by employers to employees during this period. Significant changes in the social contract may have a critical impact on employees, financial security and important health benefits. The results in this book showed that compared to 1994, in 2004 more employees worked part time than full time, and uncertainty about the amount of available work hours increased dramatically, leading to a growing lack of financial security. Outsourcing continued to rise substantially, increasing by almost six fold from 2000-2004 and there had been a further loss of health benefits for many employees. Key recommendations in this book demonstrated the importance of creating different forms of healthcare to meet the current needs of employees, and devising different ways of structuring work that fosters stable and longer term employment for employees. This would ensure that the health and personal lives of American workers would not continue on the pathway of a downward spiral.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Employee retention is one the core problems of the modern era. As firms are facing difficulties to retain their best employees in current time, employees also have the best option for them to utilize their talent in different organizations. So in this environment firms have to spend a lot on employees to retain them. If one employee leaves the organization then it can become very difficult for the organization to immediate fulfill that position. The irm has to hire the new employee after fulfilling all the procedure i.e hiring, recruiting etc. Training is also necessary for newly hired employees to became an active part of the organization and sometimes after doing lot of effort the firm does not even succeed to get the competent employees so therefore employee retention remains one of the biggest challenge for any organization to retain its best employees for the longer period. In this case the firm has to increase the salaries of employees and other benefits from time to time, promotion and other incentive to retain its employees. Training and development for capacity building is also key figure to increase employee retention. So employee retention problems exist in the business industry. The most valuable asset today is the employees of the organizations. If the organizations are going well with the employees then there is no doubt in the success of the organization. So in order to be successful, the organizations should provide their employees with the environment that is stress free and having least role conflict. In addition to it the work life balance policies should be designed and implemented in a well manner so as to create a balance in the work life and the family life of the employees. The turnover intention is the phenomenon that leads to the quitting of employees from the organization. This book gives a coherent development of the current understanding of the fluid dynamics of the middle latitude atmosphere. It is primarily aimed at post-graduate and advanced undergraduate level students and does not assume any previous knowledge of fluid mechanics, meteorology or atmospheric science. The book will be an invaluable resource for any quantitative atmospheric scientist who wishes to increase their understanding of the subject. The importance of the rotation of the Earth and the stable stratification of its atmosphere, with their implications for the balance of larger-scale flows, is highlighted throughout. Clearly structured throughout, the first of three themes deals with the development of the basic equations for an atmosphere on a rotating, spherical planet and discusses scale analyses of these equations. The second theme explores the importance of rotation and introduces vorticity and potential vorticity, as well as turbulence. In the third theme, the concepts developed in the first two themes are used to give an understanding of balanced motion in real atmospheric phenomena. It starts with quasi-geostrophic theory and moves on to linear and nonlinear theories for mid-latitude weather systems and their fronts. The potential vorticity perspective on weather systems is highlighted with a discussion of the Rossby wave propagation and potential vorticity mixing covered in the final chapter.

Gandhi Arora Ritu Talent Retention

Management of employee retention begins with the acceptance of hard reality that today it is not the company, which determines the movement of its employees but the market. In the sphere of IT age that provides easy access to information through Internet or otherwise, the company cannot insulate its employees from knowing about the attractive opportunities thrown open by the aggressive recruiters in the market. This firm reality calls for a new paradigm in managing retention. Instead of attempting to minimize migration, the management practices must aim at influencing those who would leave. Acceptance of the reality, thus, enables the management to develop a focused talent retention programme duly accompanied by an effective contingency plan for filling the prospective gaps in skills. An honest assessment of an organization's need for a set of employees to remain with the company makes it clear as to which group should be handled with what concern for retaining them. Once this analysis is over and management is able to identify who are to be retained and for how long, it can customize their retention practices to encourage employees to stay loyal to the organisation.

A U.S. investor must understand the basic difference in the principle of individual labor law in the U.S. and how it compares with the laws of the target country in an M&A. In the U.S., under the employment at-will doctrine, the U.S. private sector employers can dismiss their non-unionized employees at any time for any reason or even no reason at all. In most European Union (EU) countries and Germany and Italy specifically, employees are presumed to have a basic right to keep their jobs indefinitely. One of the greatest labor cost disparity with the U.S. is not wages. It is the amount of paid time-off and other benefits. Employers in Germany and Italy will find it difficult to discharge employees without incurring substantial liability. For high-level, long-term employees, these severance payments can run into six or even seven figures.

Get what you need from your boss In this follow-up to the bestselling It's Okay to Be the Boss, Bruce Tulgan argues that as managers demand more and more from their employees, they are also providing them with less guidance than ever before. Since the number one factor in employee success is the relationship between employees and their immediate managers, employees need to take greater responsibility for getting the most out of that relationship. Drawing on years of experience training managers and employees, Tulgan reveals the four essential things employees should get from their bosses to guarantee success at work. Shows employees how to ask for what they need to succeed in their high-pressure jobs Shatters previously held beliefs about how employees should manage up Outlines what employees must get from their managers: clear expectations; the skills needed to perform their jobs; honest feedback, recognition or rewards A novel approach to managing up, It's Okay to Manage Your Boss is an invaluable resource for employees who want to work more effectively with their managers.

Empowerment produces the conditions for high performance. Especially for middle managers and below. Empowered cultures attract and retain talent. They produce high achievement, high accountability and high commitment. The Empowered Manager uncovers a roadmap to creating a more accountable culture in today's fragmented and virtual world. Bestselling author Peter Block is a true visionary: author of the classic Flawless Consulting, his work is about empowerment, stewardship, chosen accountability, and reconciliation of community. In this book, he returns his eye toward management to renew our efforts to create a shift in the traditional hierarchy. Twenty years after the original book, Block talks of why it is so difficult to both open the door to empowerment and more importantly, have people walk through it. It is more important than ever to create a culture in which all members of an organization are treated as entrepreneurs, giving them ownership over their role and responsibilities. This is in the face of the reality that most employees want safety, not the adventure of empowerment. Peter enhances the first edition of the book by acknowledging employees wish for dependency. Their longing for the days when a job carried a promise of a future, and companies cared more about the product and the people, than about the money. This is written primarily for people in the middle. Good managers and employees who care more about doing good work and treating people right, than ambition and making it into the ruling class. The upper middle and below is where there is the greatest need for great management. Which builds on valuing strengths, and allowing talent the space to stretch and achieve. Almost independent of the power points of people at the top. This book shows you how a new approach to management empowers all employees at all levels, and culminates in better business outcomes for the entire organization. Help shape a culture of commitment Develop the political skills to negotiate successfully Take responsibility for your actions Learn to fail up, and face setbacks with courage If you feel controlled by bureaucracy, unrewarded for creativity, and from a distance, powerless to control your own destiny, this book is the breath of fresh air your career has been craving. Timeless tips from a master of business strategy alongside a framework for more effective management makes The Empowered Manager a must-read guide for anyone doing business today.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: As especially in the 1990s corporations today still reconsider their organisational and ownership structures to become more competitive and profitable. Corporate restructuring, however, is not a value creating mechanism per se, but it can enhance corporate flexibility and focus the company on its main line of business. During a restructuring process, the parent firm has several options and choosing the right one in order to be successful is probably one of the most challenging tasks for the management. Options can be utilised to reduce ownership through a Carve-out or eliminate involvement in a Spin-off or Asset Sell-off. A rather unknown form, the Tracking Stock, will also be mentioned and explained. They all added a new dimension to the corporate landscape. Typically, the corporation’s aims of restructuring are to create shareholder value. In the last two decades, the tendency was to strengthen the focus on its core businesses and becoming more and more a ‘pure player’ in its extreme form. The potential of divestiture activities during the next years will still be very high, if one imagines that only in Germany the 30 DAX companies own around 4.500 subsidiaries. One particularly interesting alteration of firm boundaries involves a parent firm partially divesting its ownership stake in a subsidiary via an Equity Carve-out. Equity Carve-outs have become widely known tools for corporations that shed divisions, which are no longer part of their core busi...

"The Inventions, Researches and Writings of Nikola Tesla" is a book compiled and edited by Thomas Commerford Martin detailing the work of Nikola Tesla. The book is a comprehensive compilation of Tesla's work and profusely illustrated. Written at the end of the 19th century, the book is a record of Tesla's pioneering activities, research, and works. Tesla is recognized as one of the foremost electrical investigators and inventors. At the time of publication, the book was the "bible" of every electrical engineer practicing the profession. The book includes Tesla's lectures, miscellaneous articles and discussions, and makes note of all his inventions up to the date of publication, particularly polyphase motors and the effects obtained with currents of high potential and high frequency. The book demonstrates that Tesla continued on the scientific frontier, barely pausing for an instant to work out details of utilization that may have at once been obvious to him. Wherever possible his own language was employed in the writing of the book.

Robert Sroufe, Steven Melnyk Developing Sustainable Supply Chains to Drive Value. Management Issues, Insights, Concepts, and Tools

As we enter the 21st Century, we find ourselves faced by two major developments. The first is emergence of the supply chain as a critical strategic and tactical weapon. As has been pointed out by many researchers, with the emergence of the supply chain, the unit of competition has shifted from the firm to the supply chain. However, with the advent of the supply chain, it is important to recognize that we have to view strategic objectives within a context that stresses not simply the internal operations of the firm but also the elements of the supply chain - elements that include the supplier base, customers, logistics linkages, and relationships, both visible and virtual. We are now coming to realize that the supply chain is no stronger than its weakest link. The second development is that of sustainability. This is more than simply being environmentally responsible. Rather, it is overall sustainability as measured in terms of the firm's ability to reduce waste, improve profitability, generating strategic competitive advantages, and ensure that it treats its employees well. Sustainability is increasingly becoming at a minimum an expectation and a requirement for doing business (i.e., an order qualifier) and under many conditions something that differentiates firms and makes them more attractive to potential critical consumers (i.e., an order winner). These two developments, while often treated as separate entities, are interrelated. It is this interrelationship that forms...

Presence of debt in the capital structure of a firm restricts the firm in certain areas and these restrictions sometimes compel the companies to go for the omission of dividends or to set a lower dividend payout ratio. Lower dividend payout refers to the higher retained earnings, higher liquidity and lesser chances of getting into more debt. This study aims to find the relationship and impact of financial leverage on the dividend policy of the firms in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sector and the Fuel and Energy Sector listed at Karachi Stock Exchange (Pakistan). The results of the study revealed that Fuel and Energy Sector is more indebted than the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sector and the financial leverage has a negative relationship with the dividend payout ratio of the firms.

Managing Global Accounts will help you address the issues of dealing with global customers. As globalization takes hold several things happen; customers are more demanding and sophisticated, competition gets tougher, business is more complex and fast changing, and highly competent global account managers are in short supply. The managerial challenges of competing in a global world are more difficult in orders of magnitude than competing domestically. Life is especially tough when the corporation is not centrally focused on the global customer when corporate personnel across functions and around the world do not get it.To get it means understanding at a visceral level that success or failure with global customers maybe synonymous with success or failure of the entire enterprise. Unless all employees are focused in the firms relationship with its global customers, competitors that do get it will surpass them. Indeed, competitive advantage based on building global supplier customer relationships may be longer-lasting than competitive advantage based on products or services. Companies cancel products but they less easily cancel people, especially those that have served them well. But the promise of long-run sustainable competitive advantage can be secured only if the firm truly focuses in serving the global customer. No matter where they are located, all firm employees must understand they are competing in a global world and that success with global customers is the Holy Grail. T...

Max Luca Wiegand Impact Investing. The Future of Investing.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: Throughout the last decades, the global society has increasingly been debating about our responsibility to act in a sustainable and socially acceptable manner, both from a private and a corporate point of view. Over the course of this very discussion, governments, organizations and numerous institutions began to, among others, advocate sustainable energies such as wind and solar power in order to counteract the destruction and global warming of our planet. Since then, also a large part of the companies around the globe have changed their self-concept, moving away from the conception of reckless businesses that are solely being after the maximum profit in everything they do, and striving after the perception of caring yet economically successful enterprises that support both their employees and their (social) environment. As a matter of fact, the so-called corporate social responsibility has become a major aspect on how potential employees or clients assess a company's value nowadays. And as part of this development many enterprises - first and foremost banks and other financial institutions - have, at least to some extent, adjusted their investing behavior as well, representing social awareness and creating additional value through a wide variety of social and/ or sustainable investments. The Global Deployment country manager worried about a higher turnover rate among employees back from foreign assignments (former expatriates) than the average employee fluctuation in the company. Cross company research indicates that an average 25 % percent of repatriates leave their company in the year following repatriation and up to 50% in a period of three years. This thesis has two main goals: 1. Finding out possible reasons for high turnover after repatriation 2. Identify measures likely to lower turnover after repatriation In order to achieve this, foreign assignments are first placed in the context of the employee. The main question here is what happens to the employee in the process of the foreign assignment (pre-departure to re-entry) and how he possibly manages it. This covers diverse aspects from cultural problems to financial aspects as well as the employees’ expectations. (See detail in summary, Part C) The second step is to place foreign assignments in the context of the company. Why foreign assignments, what are its benefits and disadvantages. Do companies really take advantage of the full potential of their repatriates? How do most companies handle their foreign assignments? (See detail in summary, Part D) Having defined the whole range of causes for high turnover, the last part of the thesis suggests a strategic approach to for...

Deliberately challenging practitioners to do more, this insightful discussion sorts through the tools and techniques developed over the last century to examine their true relevance to the modern workplace. You'll learn which activities show the greatest potential to improve the lives of employees and the organizations they work for, and identify which of your existing practices don't really add enough value to be worth the expenditure of time, money, and potentially lost talent. The author asks you to make up your own mind about which approaches work best for your own specific talent decisions, but provides the best theory and practice available today as a foundation upon which to formulate a more relevant strategy. In a world of big data, the potential to understand employees and react appropriately has never been greater. So why is Talent Management as an industry relying on outdated theory and practices? This book is a guide to bringing HR up to date, giving you the tools, techniques, and perspective you need to demonstrate more value to your organization. Adopt the tools and techniques most effective in today's workplace Identify and discard methods that don't add value to the organization Implement critical changes that can transform the HR function Make better people decisions based on psychology and research Fundamentally, not much has changed in what constitutes good people practice. Riccardo Altenburg The determinants of roles and responsibilities of boards of directors in subsidiary companies

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 8,0, VU University Amsterdam , course: Boards of Directors / Governance / Strategy, language: English, abstract: Despite the growing importance and the current trend of a globalizing economy, relatively little is known about the roles and responsibilities of subsidiary board of directors and how they are influenced by various drivers. This thesis focuses on and investigates the roles and responsibilities of a subsidiary board and which firm-related (internal) and environmental-related(external) drivers could potentially influence these roles. From the existing literature on corporate governance four major roles are derived for the SB, namely a monitoring, advising, internal and external role. Qualitative data from 8 in-depth interviews with board members of a global subsidiary company provided a clear set of responsibilities in line with the four board roles. Furthermore, in this case firm growth, acquisitions and the organization at the parent level are seen as major internal drivers of board responsibilities. Economical downturn, industry changes and technological innovations are seen as critical externaldrivers of board responsibilities in a subsidiary company. Additionally, this thesis shows that in times of economical recession the board tends take on a moremonitoring focused role. Smaller firms and acquisitions lead to a strong internal focus whereas the changes...

Gary R. Carini, Mark G. Dunn Wally.s Workplace Wisdom. A fly.s-eye view of ways to boost employee morale and stimulate productivity

While the business at No. 19 Imperial Drive had some early success, the company never reached its full potential. At the rate it was going, it probably never would. The company was taking steps backward, with no viable plan to reverse this trend. And then it happened – THE event. The story begins on a normal day and, when it concludes, the company has changed forever.Wally’s Workplace Wisdom is a short but pragmatic parable. Maybe the story is about you. It could be about anyone in your company (or on your team) who has something to share, but for some reason never does. While some employees have valuable insight or information, they are either not asked or are unwilling to share their opinions. This is an illustration about the importance of encouraging everyone to share. For leaders, it’s about opening the floodgates and welcoming valuable input from every team member.Readers will resonate with Wally, a common housefly, and the main characters. As the story unfolds, Wally “takes flight” and shares his insights with the leaders at No. 19. His direct, confrontational truths, called Wally’s Words of Wisdom, help transform a dying company into one that holds renewed promise. His wisdom culminates in practical solutions, called “Wally’s Laws.” Wally’s greatest contribution is to highlight the importance and significance of the “people dimension.”From the personification of a common housefly to the analogies and metaphors that are used, readers will this simple story entertaining...

Bernhard Stellner Readability of Quarterly Reports. Do Companies Mislead Investors.

Financial reports can be regarded as the primary means of communication between a company's management and its shareholders. The reports also address all other kinds of stakeholders like employees, suppliers, customers, competitors, governments, potential investors, bond holders and, in a broad sense, the entire society. Still, it is questionable whether managers really deliver true information in their reports. One possible way of obscuring corporate information when results are negative, or of being forthcoming in disclosing information when results are good, is to adjust the reports' readability which can influence understandability as a consequence. The concrete aim of this study is to focus on the readability of letters to the shareholders of bilingual (German and English) quarterly reports of listed companies at Frankfurt Stock Exchange. It is examined how various factors influence the readability of company reports.
