Environmental pollution has increasingly become an issue of global concern because of climate change and consciousness for environmental sustainability. To this end, this paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and economic growth of the G8 countries over the period of 56 years spanning 1960 through 2015 using both the Fully Modified and Dynamic OLS estimation techniques. The empirical investigation establishes the critical roles played by energy consumption and CO2 emissions on economic growth but in substantially opposite directions. While that of the former positively enhances economic growth, on the one hand, the latter negatively deters it. In addition, a long-run relationship is equally established but with the varied direction of causality. Finally, the study offers significant policy implications directed at using energy resource efficiently as well as curtailing environmental contaminants.

Socio-economic inequality is deeply rooted in Zimbabwe due to a number of factors. One of the main factors is the exclusion of socio-economic rights as justiciable under the now repealed Lancaster House Constitution (LHC). A plethora of excessive bureaucratic actions in a number of instances left many people stranded without the recourse to the law, particularly without protection by the Constitution. To correct this historic anomaly, the 2013 Constitution was enacted. The 2013 Constitution protects both civil and political rights and socio-economic rights in the same way as justiciable rights. This provides the highest degree of interdependence and interrelatedness of all rights in the domestic legal order. In order to ensure that socio-economic rights are effectively protected and enforced, this study identifies and discusses the framework for protecting socio-economic rights under the 2013 Constitution. Firstly, the specific rights protected under the Constitution and the obligations imposed by these rights are presented. Secondly, the role of the courts in the protection of socio-economic rights is discussed. Further, some of the major conceptual and practical challenges that are likely to arise in the adjudication of socio-economic rights are identified. In this regard, the study attempts to present solutions meant to overcome the conceptual and practical challenges that are faced in the enforcement of socio-economic rights. Furthermore, this study argues that strictly ad...

In addition, it is focused on the driving forces and levels of international and country-specific environmental policies. The roots of environmental policy are pointed out. In this context, the different levels of environmental regulations are identified therewith deducing implications for the compliance-behaviour of firms. This paper also explicates the environmental implications of different economic theories. It is exemplified how different stakeholders might influence the strategic orientation of enterprises towards environmental performance and the various environmental strategies on firm-level are explicated. It is especially focused on different approaches being developed in order to test the empirical evidence predictions of the "pollution haven hypothesis". Therefore four studies are reviewed and commented on.

Vehicular pollution aroused due to rapid urbanization & industrialization. Vehicles emit cocktails of pollutants which pose serious threat to plants & humans. In present study the concentrations of SO2 and NO2, particulate matter (PM) were estimated. The presence of metals and PAHs in PM were biomonitored using plants. The study was performed to know whether presence of these pollutants in PM have any genotoxic effect or not and for this, the genotoxicity of urban air pollutants using Tradescantia pallida micronucleus bioassay was performed. In present study air pollution tolerance index (APTI) of different plant species were calculated. Taking into consideration of APTI and various biological and socio-economic characters of these plants species, anticipated performance index (API) were also calculated. The findings show that on the basis of API, plants can be suggested for green belt development in urban areas to ameliorated urban air pollution.

This study investigated the socio-economic effects of migration on places of origin in rural Ankole, Western Uganda in 1990-2000. The study was carried out in the migrants area of origin not migrants area of destination. A sample of 300 households comprised of 2024 people was drawn from two counties (Igara and Ruhinda) of Bushenyi District, Western Uganda. Households with or without people who have migrated were compared to ascertain socio-economic differences in their status. A total of 148 households who have had out migrants and 152 households that have had migrants were compared. The independent variable was migration status of the household (migrant or non migrant) and the dependent variables were education, health, possessions in form of fixed assets, type of housing and affordability of certain food assets. A socio-economic index was computed to analyze expenditure patterns and well-being of the households. This was done because it is difficult to establish income levels of rural people. The socio-economic index shows the socio-economic status between households of migrants and non migrants.

All legal documents, that are considered in this research work, underline that, child trafficking is a worth fighting and a criminal act. But it is amazing that, although there are numerous legal instruments in the country the incidence, nature, effect and realities of child trafficking is unutterably outrageous. Like other parts of the country, Bahir Dar hosts zillion of trafficked children from every corner of the country. This is attributable to various and interdependent factors: economic, social, cultural, political, demographic and environmental factors. Induced by these factors, child trafficking results in serious psychosocial, medical, mental and other consequences on the victims and the community. Therefore, curving the problem and its resultant effects requires seeking solutions from economic, social, cultural, political, demographic and environmental perspective.

The drive towards environmentally friendly buildings and infrastructure has led to a growing interest in providing design solutions underpinned by the core principles of sustainability to balance economic, social and environmental factors. Design Economics for the Built Environment: Impact of sustainability on project evaluation presents new directions, reflecting the need to recognise the impact of climate change and the importance of sustainability in project evaluation. The aim is to provide a new approach to understanding design economics in the context of the changing policy environment, legislative and regulatory framework, and increasing economic, environmental and social pressure as result of the sustainability agenda. The book follows a structured approach from theories and principles in the earlier chapters, to the practical applications and emerging techniques focusing on value and social, economic and environmental considerations in making design decisions. It starts with the policy context, building on various theories and principles such as, capital cost, value of design and resource-based theories, the new rules of measurement (NRM) to explore cost planning, the relationship between height and costs, key socio-economic and environmental variables for design appraisal, eco-cost/value ratio (EVR), whole life theory and the treatment of carbon emission as external costs, productivity and efficiency, fiscal drivers and legal framework for carbon reduction, procurement and allocation of risks in contracts. Case studies, practical examples and frameworks throughout reinforce theories and principles and relate them to current practice. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students in architecture, building and quantity surveying and is also a valuable resource for academics, consultants and policy-makers in the built environment.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Law - Public Law / Miscellaneous, grade: A, University of Dhaka (Department of Law), course: Environmental Law of Bangladesh, language: English, abstract: Increasing industrialization and lack of waste treatment is leading to major environmental pollution problem in many parts of Bangladesh, impacting on both aquatic and non-aquatic ecosystems and the population who depend on them for their livelihood activities. Environment, the message of which has a strong correlation with the subtle human existence, are a burning issue around the world. Every country desires to have a better environment for which all possible efforts are being adopted to make the people aware and educated about the environment, to control unwise use of resources, to keep environment pollution free. Legal framework is also being made wherever necessary, with an appropriate augmentation of individual country efforts, supported and appreciated by international communities. Now relevant aspects of environment policies are being considered as a sectoral component of all major international treaties. Thus, now a day, enforcing congenial environment condition free from pollution has become a pre-condition for all development activities.

Consistency and Credibility? identifies in its first part the extent of correlation between actual environmental performance, the use of physical environmental performance indicators and corporate environmental reporting in the paper and electricity industries in Germany and the UK. The results suggest environmental performance is mainly country-related, possibly due to differences in environmental legislation. This implies that any assessment of the relationship between environmental and economic performance of firms needs to be based on actual environmental performance data and cannot take reporting quality or information about the intensity of use of specific tools, such as environmental performance indicators as a proxy variable. The second part of the book therefore analyses the relationship between environmental and economic performance. Based on the results, the book's second part concludes that for firms in environmentally-intensive industries it is difficult to create a positive link between their environmental and economic performance, and that market settings as well as strategy considerations both can have an effect, but situational aspects determine which of these dominates.Consistency and Credibility? provides useful information for practitioners as well as deeper insights for academics about the link of environmental reporting and environmental performance measurement and how this interacts with economic success. It thus reveals valuable strategic insights ...

Introduces a bold, new model for energy industry pollution prevention and sustainable growth Balancing industrial pollution prevention with economic growth is one of the knottiest problems faced by industry today. This book introduces a novel approach to using data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a powerful tool for achieving that balance in the energy industries—the world’s largest producers of greenhouse gases. It describes a rigorous framework that integrates elements of the social sciences, corporate strategy, regional economics, energy economics, and environmental policy, and delivers a methodology and a set of strategies for promoting green innovation while solving key managerial challenges to greenhouse gas reduction and business growth. In writing this book the authors have drawn upon their pioneering work and considerable experience in the field to develop an unconventional, holistic approach to using DEA to assess key aspects of sustainability development. The book is divided into two sections, the first of which lays out a conventional framework of DEA as the basis for new research directions. In the second section, the authors delve into conceptual and methodological extensions of conventional DEA for solving problems of environmental assessment in all contemporary energy industry sectors. Introduces a powerful new approach to using DEA to achieve pollution prevention, sustainability, and business growth Covers the fundamentals of DEA, including theory, statistical models, and practical issues of conventional applications of DEA Explores new statistical modeling strategies and explores their economic and business implications Examines applications of DEA to environmental analysis across the complete range of energy industries, including coal, petroleum, shale gas, nuclear energy, renewables, and more Summarizes important studies and nearly 800 peer reviewed articles on energy, the environment, and sustainability Environmental Assessment on Energy and Sustainability by Data Envelopment Analysis is must-reading for researchers, academics, graduate students, and practitioners in the energy industries, as well as government officials and policymakers tasked with regulating the environmental impacts of industrial pollution.

Essential concepts and issues in Environmental science, including global warming caused by greenhouse effect, negative and positive feedback, the Gala hypothesis, the Chaos theory, environmental economics principles of cost-benefit analysis, tradable permits, and other topics, have been explained in such detailed but straightforward manner for the law student, law lecturer, legal practitioner and even the general reader, who may otherwise feel unfamiliar with some of these scientific subjects critical to appreciating the law in the area, to comprehend quite easily. Of tremendous benefit of the legal practitioner, researchers and judges, this book also examines a lot of cases of environmental protection both in Nigeria and foreign jurisdictions, such as the United Kingdom, United States, India, the Philippines, and a host of other countries mostly within the common law tradition. The intention is to give life to the cold principles of environmental protection law by examining the cases in which environmental legal principles have been applied. It is hoped that environmental law students, law lecturers, legal practitioners and policymakers should find this book indispensible, and judges, too, in their adjudication of technical environmental matters.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich VWL - Umweltökonomie, , Veranstaltung: Environmental Economics, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Monetary valuation of environmental goods has by now become the subject of numerous economic books and articles. Interest in the topic seems to be increasing in the economics profession, and theoretical insight, methodological improvements and the numbers of empirical findings are expanding rapidly. The aim of such valuation is usually to incorporate environmental concerns into a cost-benefit analysis. Another purpose is to construct environmentally adjusted national income measures Environmental value estimates have also been combined with macroeconomic models, e.g. to estimate welfare effects of a climate treaty Further, estimated willingness to pay is now accepted in the USA as a basis for legal compensation claims for damages to natural resources caused by spill of hazardous substances (Nyborg, 1996)Valuation can simply be defined "as an attempt to put monetary values or to environmental goods and services or natural resources". It is a key exercise in economic analysis and its results provide important information about values of environmental goods and services. This information can be used to influence decisions about wise use and conservation of forests and other ecosystems. The basic aim of valuation is to determine people's preferences by gauging how much they are willing to pay (WTP) for given benefits or certain env...

The financial crisis of 2007 further exacerbated economic instability due to high foreign debt, lack of competitiveness, declining productivity, and high unemployment and underemployment. This in turn has precipitated increasing social and environmental problems, including poverty, inequality, crime and violence, and environmental degradation, all of which require new perspectives and policy approaches for transformative change and sustainable development. In this two volume multidisciplinary edited book The Modern Caribbean Economy, Volume I provides scholars and practitioners with alternative theoretical perspectives and concrete policy recommendations, while Volume II discusses economic, industrial, and social problems facing the Caribbean along with pragmatic proposals to successfully deal with these, while building local resilience and enhancing institutional strength in the region.

Companies are developing strategies to realize value based upon the concept of sustainability. Businesses recognize that sustainability can create a strategic advantage, and can become instrumental to their long-term viability. The concept has dramatically expanded the scope of measuring organizational performance into the economic, social, and environmental components that are often referred to collectively as the "triple bottom line." Organizations are discovering that specific products and processes can have profound environmental and social implications besides normal economic benefits. Within this context, organizational decision-makers must contend with numerous stakeholder issues, pressure from environmental agencies, and increased social consciousness that affects workers, consumers, and communities. These factors must be balanced by a reasonable return on investment and long-term organizational success. The interaction between these conflicting pressures and barriers makes it difficult for organizations to adopt sustainability strategies.

Despite bringing prosperity, industrialisation generally leads to increasing levels of pollution which has a detrimental impact on the environment. In response, legislation which seeks to control or prevent such impact has become common. Similarly, climate change and energy security have become major drivers for the regulatory regimes that have emerged in the energy field. Given the global or regional scope of many environmental problems, international cooperation is often necessary to ensure such legislation is effective. The EU and the UK have contributed to the development of the environmental and energy law regimes currently in force, spanning across international, transnational and national levels. At the same time, practical responses to environmental and energy problems have largely been the focus of engineers, scientists and other technical experts. Environmental & Energy Law attempts to bridge the knowledge gap between legal developments designed to achieve environmental and/or energy-related objectives and the practical, scientific and technical considerations applicable to the same environmental problems. In particular, it attempts to convey a broad range of topical issues in environmental and energy law, from climate and energy regulation, technology innovation and transfer, to pollution control, environmental governance and enforcement. In addition the book outlines key sector specific legal regimes (including water, waste and air quality management), focusing on issues or topics that are particularly relevant to both environmental and energy lawyers, and engineering, science and technology-oriented professionals and students. In this vein, the book guides the reader on some basic practical applications of the law within scientific, engineering and other practical settings. The book will be useful to all those working or studying in the environmental or energy arena, including law students, legal professionals, engineering and science students and professionals. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental and energy law, the book embraces all readerships and helps to address the often thorny problem of communication between scientists, engineers, lawyers and policy-makers.

This study focuses on the right to education in Lesotho. The extent to which this country has incorporated socio-economic rights, specifically the right to education, is explored. The mechanisms through which the said right is turned into reality; the challenges such right entails and the approach taken by the government are also looked at. As a signatory to many human rights instruments, Lesotho is charged with an obligation of realising socio-economic rights. One of the many international law obligations facing Lesotho emanates from the provisions of International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

The Republic of Somaliland has made remarkable achievements since 1991 when it declared its independence from the rest of Somalia; it functions as a sovereign state, maintains the security of its borders, provides essential goods and services and represents an oasis of order and good government. However, its citizens have been suffering due to the siege imposed on it by the lack of recognition. Somalilander's are isolated from the international community. They cannot travel easily or trade with the world of which they are part, despite the strategic geographical location they occupy. Education and health facilities are hardly accessible. This is because the government is unable to deliver basic services due to the lack of access to international financial institutions or direct bilateral assistance, trade and foreign investment are handicapped as a result of the lack of recognition. Thus, the author seeks to analyse the legal implications of non-recognition of Somaliland in international law in her quest to attract foreign investment for socio-economic development. It explores the real constraints on the capacity to function as a modern state, both domestically and internationally

Building on an earlier collaboration on the ISEOR approach - Socio-EconomicIntervention in Organizations: The Intervener-Researcher and the SEAM Approach to OrganizationalAnalysis (IAP, 2007) - Buono and Savall bring together over 30 talented intervener-researchers to exploreand examine the ongoing evolution of the Socio-Economic Approach to Management (SEAM).This volume revisits the application of SEAM in the context of intervention challenges in the wake of the recent economic crisis and the disruptivechange that has taken hold across the world. The basic foundation of SEAM - built on the idea of strategic patience, the need to undertake holisticintervention in organizations, and the challenge to get organizational members to listen to themselves (through what they refer to as the mirror effect)- has remained the same. In response to economic and organizational pressures in the current environment, however, there has been a concomitantemphasis on helping client organizations achieve short-term results while still maintaining focus on the long term. Therefore, in this book he sets out to understand the role that economics plays in international environmental policy-making. He considers both the economic factors and the non-economic factors which are at play in such policy-making, and then considers whether both economic and environmental objectives can be jointly achieved in order to preserve biodiversity.

The dire African economic situation has been a perennial problem for the past six decades. Many problems emanate from slow economic growth, such as poverty and unemployment. There is a need for a collective effort to ensure economic growth, which would be the most viable solution to these problems, and the key to such a collective effort is regional economic integration (REI).This study examines REI within the legal context. It tests the proposition that the law can be used as a means to achieving REI. At the heart of this proposition lies the legal challenge that comes with the different approaches to legal reception and how they impede the realisation of REI. An analysis is performed of the theories related to legal reception, which include the monist, the dualist and the hybrid theories. REI was embraced in Europe and has yielded fruitful results. There is no doubt that the collective efforts to realise economic growth in other continents stem from the inspiration of the European example. Europe is used in this study to illustrate how the obstacles that accompany the different approaches to legal reception may be superseded. The study examines how the law was used in Europe as a means to attain REI. An attempt is then made to understand REI from an African perspective by setting out the legal framework and its shortcomings. Attention is paid to Africa's sub-region of Southern Africa, and the study examines legal reception within Southern Africa and how the different ap...

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 100.00, , course: EMBC - Neoliberalism and Conservation, language: English, abstract: Neoliberalist economic policy is one of the main driving forces in world governance in the 21st Century. Unfortunately, its attributes (individual property rights, unrestrained competition, deregulation, privatisation, short-term profit, risk-propensity, lack of safeguards, globalisation) seem to be completely at odds with environmental sustainability. Neoliberal policy may be the major reason for the failure of governments to form proper environmental protection guarantees for the security of future generations. This is particularly apparent in the context of climate change, where corporate and environmental interests consistently clash, and fisheries, where the commercialization of species may threaten future food security. In this essay, I ask if it is possible to reconcile neoliberalism with marine conservation, with focus on fisheries management. I begin by describing failures to protect natural environments, and the particular characteristics of the marine realm and of neoliberalism that are of relevance in the conflict between economic and environmental interests. I go on to explain the interplay between these factors, and the effect of resulting policies on environmental sustainability. I consider the role of the valuation of natural capital as a major area of debate in terms of t...

Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. One of the most basic problems of the present century in the Third World Countries is rural poverty. The rural labour households form the hard core of rural poor and the most of the socially backward classes, such as, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes fall in this category. Most of the population is depending upon agriculture that is contributing about one-fourth of the National Income in the country. The most important feature of them are that they have very little or low productive assets and the major part of their income is derived from casual or irregular employment available in villages in Andhra pradesh. The dimensions of poverty among the rural labour households are reflected by the extent of indebtedness among the households and low consumption levels. The basis of findings of the study, it would be useful to make some suggestions that would help to improve the socio-economic conditions of agricultural labourers. The improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the agricultural labour, the large segment of work force would promote economic welfare in general and ultimate lead the Indian economy on the path of growth with stability.

The level of infant mortality has been regarded as an explicit indicator to measure the extent of health problems associated with a population as well as its socio-economic development. Since the Indian states are quite diverse in the social, economic, cultural geographical and environmental conditions, they also differ in the pace of mortality transition. Some states have very less infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Kerala and while some has very high infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Madhya Pradesh. Although the overall infant mortality rate of India is declining, there is some retardation with the pace of decline of infant mortality rate. The present levels of infant and child mortality are quite high and need immediate attention. Consequently, for the policy makers, this remains a difficult task to tackle. National family health survey-1992-93, 1998-99 and 2005-06 data are used for the analysis.
