The Oxford Handbook of Animal Studies The Oxford Handbook of Animal Studies Новинка

The Oxford Handbook of Animal Studies

Intellectual struggles with the "animal question"? how humans can rethink and reconfigure their relationships with other animals? first began to take hold in the 1970s. Over the next forty years, scholars from a wide range of fields would make sweeping reevaluations of the relationship between humans and other animals. The Oxford Handbook of Animal Studies brings these diverse evaluations together for the first time, paying special attention to the commodification of animals, the degradation of the natural world and a staggering loss of animal habitat and species extinction, and the increasing need for humans to coexist with other animals in urban, rural and natural contexts. Linda Kalof maps these themes into the five major categories that structure this volume: Animals in the Landscape of Law, Politics and Public Policy; Animal Intentionality, Agency and Reflexive Thinking; Animals as Objects in Science, Food, Spectacle and Sport; Animals in Cultural Representations; and Animals in Ecosystems. Written by international scholars with backgrounds in philosophy, law, history, English, art, sociology, geography, archaeology, environmental studies, cultural studies, and animal advocacy, the thirty chapters in this handbook investigate key issues and concepts central to understanding our current relationship with other animals and the potential for coexistence in an ecological community of living beings.

Евгения Петрова Genia Chef: Glory of a New Century

The solo exhibition of Genia Chef presents the creative oeuvre of the well-known master of contemporary art who was born in the Soviet Union and from 1985 works in foreign countries (Germany, Austria, the United States of America, Spain). The exposition includes the paintings, light-boxes and installations presenting the original re-comprehension of the canons of the historical genre that had a leading place in the system of the official Soviet art. Genia Chef who received the professional artistic education in the Soviet Union combines in his works the academic manner of painting with the expressive means of the newest electronic technologies that he had mastered during the study in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1988-1993). The author constantly accentuates the absurdity of content in his works where the images of the Revolutionary leaders, classics of the Russian literature, ancient gods and heroes, pre-history animals and buildings of different epochs are paradoxically combined. Using the expressive means of the Social-art, Fantastic Realism of the Vienna School and the leading artists of surrealism Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte, Genia Chef strives to the ironic reflection of the historical process that had lost any logic and meaning and is open for the artist's and viewer's free and playful interpretation.

Comprising commissioned contributions from leading international scholars, it provides an overview of literary theory, beyond Shakespeare, focusing on most major figures, as well as some lesser-known writers of the period. The tripartite structure offers a map of the critical landscape so that students can appreciate the breadth of the work being done, along with an exploration of the ways in which the treatments of or approaches to key issues have changed over time. Reading the Pre-Raphaelites

Noted for its vivid colours, elaborate use of symbols, and dedication to close observation of the natural world, the work of Pre-Raphaelite artists combines a deep engagement with the past and a modern realism that exemplifies the concerns of the age of steam travel. In "Reading the Pre-Raphaelites", author Tim Barringer draws on an imaginative selection of paintings, drawings, and photographs to suggest that the dynamic energy of Pre-Raphaelitism arose out of the paradoxes at its heart. Past and present, historicism and modernity, symbolism and realism, as well as the tensions between city and country, men and women, worker and capitalist, colonizer and colonized all make appearances within Pre-Raphaelite art. By focusing on these issues, Barringer draws together the strands of revisionist thought on the Pre-Raphaelites and provides a range of stimulating new interpretations of their work. Beautifully illustrated, the second edition of this authoritative survey traces the history of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and includes new sections on photography as well as a revised introduction and bibliography.

A Culture of Stone: Inka Perspectives on Rock A Culture of Stone: Inka Perspectives on Rock Новинка

A Culture of Stone: Inka Perspectives on Rock

A major contribution to both art history and Latin American studies, "A Culture of Stone: Inka Perspectives on Rock" offers sophisticated new insights into Inka culture and the interpretation of non-Western art. Carolyn Dean focuses on rock outcrops masterfully integrated into Inka architecture, exquisitely worked masonry, and freestanding sacred rocks, explaining how certain stones took on lives of their own and played a vital role in the unfolding of Inka history. Examining the multiple uses of stone, she argues that the Inka understood building in stone as a way of ordering the chaos of unordered nature, converting untamed spaces into domesticated places, and laying claim to new territories. Dean contends that understanding what the rocks signified requires seeing them as the Inka saw them: as potentially animate, sentient, and sacred. Through careful analysis of Inka stonework, colonial-period accounts of the Inka, and contemporary ethnographic and folkloric studies of indigenous Andean culture, Dean reconstructs the relationships between stonework and other aspects of Inka life, including imperial expansion, worship, and agriculture. She also scrutinizes meanings imposed on Inka stone by the colonial Spanish and, later, by tourism and the tourist industry. A Culture of Stone is a compelling multidisciplinary argument for rethinking how we see and comprehend the Inka past.

Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran Новинка

Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran

"Aspects of History and Epic in Ancient Iran" focuses on the content of one of the most important inscriptions of the Ancient Near East: the Bisotun inscription of the Achaemenid king Darius I (6th century BCE), which in essence reports on a suspicious fratricide and subsequent coup d'etat. Moreover, the study shows how the inscription's narrative would decisively influence the Iranian epic, epigraphic, and historiographical traditions well into the Sasanian and early Islamic periods. Intriguingly, our assessment of the impact of the Bisotun narrative on later literary traditions – in particular, the inscription of the Sasanian king Narseh at Paikuli (3rd-4th centuries CE) – necessarily relies on the reception of the oral rendition of the Bisotun story captured by Greek historians. As Rahim Shayegan argues, this oral tradition had an immeasurable impact upon the historiographical writings and epic compositions of later Iranian empires. It would have otherwise remained unknown to modern scholars, had it not been partially preserved and recorded by Hellanicus of Lesbos, Herodotus, Ctesias, and other Greek authors. The elucidation of Bisotun's thematic composition therefore not only allows us to solve an ancient murder but also to reevaluate pre-Thucydidean Greek historiography as one of the most important repositories of Iranian epic themes.

Eva Hesse’s distinctive process-based art exerted a powerful influence on minimalist artists of the 1960s and continues to inspire artists today. Provides a detailed map of contemporary critical theory in Renaissance and Early Modern English literary studies beyond Shakespeare A Handbook of English Renaissance Literary Studies is a groundbreaking guide to the contemporary engagement with critical theory within the larger disciplinary area of Renaissance and Early Modern studies. Handbook of English Renaissance Literary Studies is must-reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of early modern and Renaissance English literature, as well as their instructors and advisors.
