The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

Marcel Lossi The Failure System - The role of external actors in the Somali state collapse

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3, Helmut Schmidt University - University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (Internationale Politik), language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionSince the fall of the Barre regime in 1991, Somalia has been the most profound and outstanding example of state failure not only in Africa but the entire world. For almost 20 years Somalia has been lost in a vicious circle which the author of this paper calls "the failure system". It is a system of mutually reinforcing factors consisting of clan violence and a corresponding history of real or imagined marginalisation, the establishment of war economics, various jihads and last but not least the interference of a multitude of external actors. The question of this bachelor thesis is: What role did external actors take in the process of state failure in Somalia? My hypothesis is, that the Somali state collapse cannot be seen as a purely internal phenomenon but rather as a layered systemic process that has been influenced by external actors on a massive scale. The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to outline the role of external actors in the Somali state collapse. Albeit the focus of this work is clearly the external dimension of this conflict, we shall not neglect the internal actors and factions in Somalia. Especially after the Ethiopian invasion of 2006 and the begin of the international anti-pirate mission ...

Somaliland is an example of a territory that has fulfilled the conditions that are pre-requisite for state recognition in the international system. Somaliland is however, not recognised as a state. Questions abound about why Somaliland finds itself in this situation when there are territories which obtained recognition after fulfilling a fraction of what Somaliland has achieved. This study contributes to answering the aforementioned questions. This study has certain objectives. It delved into the examination of the criteria that is used for the recognition of states in the international system. It also analyses the role of intergovernmental organizations in the non-recognition of Somaliland. The objective of this study is also to make an assessment of the nature of interactions between Somaliland, and other actors in the international system.

It is sorely the responsibility of the state to provide security to its own citizens. But sometimes the challenge of failing states in Africa results in ethical attacks against the state from non-state actors. Usually the response could be to condemn, correct, coalesce, command or commend the state to behave accordingly. But such a response especially by the civil society requires a comprehensive analytical framework of its role, hence human security. This book attempts to analyse the role of the civil society in promoting human security in contexts of increased vulnerability. A case study of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance is used given the deplorable context of the decade of crisis in Zimbabwe (1998-2008). This must have book for university and college libraries, for NGOs, researchers and practitioners in peacebuilding, human security, and civil society and even for policy analysts. This is because the book identifies and evaluates strategies in advancing human security by the civil society and then further suggests further factors to consider towards enhancing it. The book gives a glaring clarity of the influence of the civil society and state relations in Zimbabwe.

Three dimensions of the concept of equity are taken into consideration: the inequality in the financing of the health system, the inequality in the distribution of the state of good health, and, finally, the iniquity in the access to health care. Some methodological developments are presented as well as the results. In conclusion we observe that the state of good health does not depend strongly on income but that it exists some iniquity in the access to health services from specialists and that the income inequality is increasing due to the financing of the health system.

Transnational business operations across the globe are common phenomenon and are increasingly more so in the age of globalization. While such operations are considered to be crucial for economic growth and development in the host countries, there are frequent allegations against TNCs of violation of human rights. The rights that are affected by TNCs activities vary from the right to self-determination to the right of life; from the right to strike to the right to a healthy environment and from the right of association to the right not to be discriminated against etc. The central question of this work is about the responsibility of actor(s) in the case of human rights violations. • What is the impact of the globalization process on the international human rights regime? • Who is responsible for such human rights violations: state(s) or transnational corporations (TNCs)? • Do TNCs need to be held responsible for human rights obligations? • How do the activities of non-state actors affect human rights? • Should non-state actors be directly responsible for human rights violations?

Dylan Kissane Tracking Power and Predicting Conflict

Charles Doran and Wes Parsons’ innovative power cycle methodology for measuring international power and explaining the onset of conflict spurred theorists to re-examine their assumptions about power. The world, however, has changed markedly in the decades since power cycle theory first emerged. The advent of globalisation, the emergence of powerful regional institutions and the transfer of state sovereignty to transnational non-state actors all suggest that power cycle theory and its twentieth-century assumptions are in need of reformulation. It is now time to embrace new measures of state power – including national innovative power and ‘soft power’ – and to recognise that military power is no longer superior to economic power. It is time, also, to recognise the growing power of non-state actors and to account for their power in the world of states. The reformulation of power cycle theory herein will be of interest not only to scholars and students of international relations but also the lay reader with a curiosity about the present and future of world politics.

Thespians is about the lives of actors, especially actors of a certain age who worked in and remember the golden age of the British repertory system. Thespians recounts the stories of over forty actors, interwoven into relevant themes. Many of the actors are household names, some of them relatively unknown. Famous or not, their stories are equally engrossing and provide a glimpse into the hard, exciting but rarely glamorous life of actors working in provincial theatre in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Most of the actors in the book have careers going back over fifty years, some even longer. Thespians is essentially, but not exclusively, about the good old days of rep, establishments that have now largely disappeared except in the memories of those who grew up in them. Fifteen or twenty years from now sadly none of those actors will be around to pass on their fascinating tales. As someone who worked in rep and knows and worked with many of the actors who have contributed to this book, I have tried to provide, in an entertaining and informative way, a record of all aspects of those times so they will, hopefully, not be forgotten.

The past decade saw heightened policy activism in the field of reading at both the federal level and across virtually all 50 states. Initially sparked by disagreements about methods for teaching children to read, the so-called "reading wars" stirred heated debates on a variety of issues: levels and trends of reading achievement, pedagogy, standards and assessment, and education equity, among others. Embedded within these debates were the political agendas of state executives and legislatures, the interests of advocacy groups, and the ideologies of reading professionals, which were collectively shaping state reading policy development. Drawing primarily on interviews with 366 policy actors from nine states, this book presents a comprehensive investigation of the state reading policy domain employing multiple theoretical frameworks and research methods. Using social network analysis, the authors examined the interplay among a plethora of policy actors embedded in reading policy networks. They explored in depth policy actors' divergent beliefs on key reading-related issues, the causal stories told, and the policy solutions proposed. In addition, they examined the variety of lobbying tactics that interest groups utilized to gain influence over the policymaking process and to advance their policy agenda. As the most significant research endeavor in the area of state reading policy to date, this cross-state comparative study sheds light on the multifaceted nature and th...

Nyambura Simon Post-Conflict Reconstruction In Africa

This book analyzes the role that the international community has played in African states post-conflict reconstruction. The fundamental questions that the research addresses are: How does the presence or the absence of coordination among international and local actors contribute to the success or failure of post-conflict reconstruction? How does the international community's coordination influence the architecture of post-conflict state reconstruction in Africa? How do actors, leadership, and power within a coordination network structure affect post-conflict reconstruction? The study argues that lack of coordination between the international and local actors is a critical factor explaining the failure of rebuilding states after civil wars. This study develops a new theoretical framework (Hybridized model) that combines market, hierarchical, and network models of coordination. This coordination theory shows how actors, leadership, and power influence coordination network structure to enhance post-conflict reconstruction efforts.

María Alejandra Martinovic The Challenges of Asymmetric Warfare. Enhancing Compliance with International Humanitarian Law by Organized Armed Groups

All armed conflicts, whether international or non-international, are characterized by some sort of asymmetry. Disparities between parties to armed hostilities have always been an issue as a matter of fact, although not necessarily addressed by International Humanitarian Law (IHL) as a matter of law. IHL remains a stranger to such situations, for it is based on its equal applicability to all parties of a conflict.Nonetheless, contemporary conflicts have shown that the said equality may no longer be the rule, but rather the exception. This refers in particular to non-international armed conflicts where parties are inherently asymmetrical and the weaker ones tend to act in straightforward violation of universally hailed rules in order to engage their technologically advanced and more resourceful enemy.Accordingly, the ways in which asymmetric actors behave during armed conflicts challenge IHL's basic foundations, and the fact that civilians still endure the burden of hostilities, as their primary victims, underpins the necessity for further efforts in the attempt to promote respect for IHL. This work assesses diverse alternatives to respond to these brutal forms of asymmetric confrontations, with a view on those mechanisms which best address the causes why non-state actors deny not only complying with IHL from a legal perspective but also contemplating policy-making considerations.

Marco Botta Firm Financing in the Euro Area. How asset risk affects capital structure decisions within the monetary union

Using a sample of non-financial listed firms located in the Euro area, the determinants of capital structure decisions in the years 2000-2003 are investigated in this study. In line with the traditional theoretical approach and in contrast with traditional empirical literature, the study is based on a market-value measure of leverage, estimated with the Merton model. In a cross-section regressions some variables have similar effects on financing decisions across countries, while others may play a different role; risk, measured as the volatility of the market value of assets, is the best predictor of observed leverage ratios. The integration of Euro-area financial markets varies significantly in different market segments: money and inter-bank markets are highly integrated, corporate bond and equity markets show a clear path of increasing integration, while retail banking markets are much less integrated. Tax and bankruptcy rules differ across the twelve countries, as well as the economic background. As a consequence, nationality is still an important determinant of observed debt ratios, despite the monetary union.

This book deals with role stress perceived by the veterinarians in Kerala. Veterinarians of the Department of Animal Husbandry play a major role is in carrying out various developmental activities in this sector. They have been traditionally involved in treatment of animals and of late they have the additional responsibility of carrying out project work associated with implementation of schemes in the animal husbandry sector in the panchayat where they work. Consequently the responsibility and work load of an average veterinarian has increased considerably and the veterinarian is placed in a position where he has to play more than one role. In such cases if the role occupant is unable to balance the two roles it may lead to inadequate performance of either role, or role stress which could affect the productivity of the veterinarian. Thus from the point of view of the organization it is important to study the nature and type of stressors of the veterinarians in the state and its influence on job and social commitment.

Social Housing in Europe combines a comparative overview of European social housing written by scholars with in-depth chapters written by international housing experts. First, is understanding what executive compensation is, including composition and objectives of pay contracts. Second, how do specific compensation agreements affect corporate behavior and performance? Third, what are the major components, including how and what are accounted for and disclosed? How is compensation, especially executive compensation, accounted for-that is, what are the calculations and journal entries required? Fourth, what does historical analysis tell us about the topic, especially how contractual decisions have been made and what has worked. Finally, what is in store for the future-both expected compensation agreements and what the compensation incentives suggest for future corporate deci...

Angshu J. Fouzder Institutional Response to Crime Against Humanity

In Bangladesh institutional response to crime against humanity of 1971 has been limited to maximalist and minimalist approach through tribunal and amnesty. Legalism and realism has dominated the debate around institutional response. Seemingly the government is unable to ensure retributive justice for all the crimes committed in 1971 and this creates scope to rethink if restorative justice can be applied for the major crimes remaining unaddressed under retributive mechanism. Maximalist approach through trial had been problematic as the post war initiative stalled for political constraints whereas restorative mechanism has inherent challenges in the context of Bangladesh. Minimalist approach was not free from criticism as perpetrators were benefited through that. Role of international organizations and other state actors was not sufficient to initiate redress to the crime as most of those actors only responded when the government reinitiated the justice process in 2009. Social organizations and social movement played effective role to mainstream the issue of justice in national policy and social response to crime against humanity has emerged as subsidiary to institutional response.

This means more and more growing stress of competition for nearly every company, because trade and entrance barriers have been elimi-nated. On the other side, this also offers more chances for growth and extending the business. Both aspects of course have one in common: capital requirements and especially staying liquid. In critical economic situations it is more than ever important to stay liquid (having enough pos-sibilities to cover the short-term possibilities). That's the task of financing and planning the finances. There are two main sources of assessing capital: equity financing and outside or credit capital. It should be a strategic and well calculated decision, what the capital structure of a company should look like. The "leverage effect" plays an important role in this context. But it is often not easy to create this structure like it is wished. There are many factors which influence the "price" and the efforts for getting liquidity out of certain capital sources. One big example therefore is the "Basle 2" decision, which makes it...

Kennedy Institute for North American Studies), language: English, abstract: This paper analyses macroeconomic imbalances within fixed exchange rate systems as the European Monetary Union. The leading question is explaining why during the years after the financial crisis of 2007, Institutions such as the European Commission and the IMF made policy recommendations aimed at shifting production resources from the non-tradable to the tradable sector; especially in countries with large current account imbalances and low competitiveness.Inferring that not accomplishing such a reallocation of production resources will yield a major 'pain of adjustment', the paper investigates the role of the non-tradable sector size in the European adjustment process. The mentioned 'pain of adjustment' plays a central role and is understood as the time and/or the contraction required for reaching a certain level of external balance in terms of social costs, most notably unemployment. The conclusions are based on a graphical modification of Krugman and Obstfeld's (2006) model conceived for explaining the rigidities of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates and suggest that deficit countries with underemployment attempting to reach external and internal balance can reduce the 'pain of adjustment' ...

This book is about recognizing the works of notable liberal scholars who have conducted various studies in which their findings reveal that liberal democratic countries and their political actors, such as government officials, political party, interest groups, and mass media leaders are peaceful compared to illiberal democratic or authoritarian countries and political actors. The system of liberal democracy provides the best political actors that provide excellent services and goods aimed at responding to the citizens’ needs equally, regardless of religion and political affiliation, race, gender, origin, age, etc. This glory works of delivering the extraordinary services to the citizens equally occur because liberal political actors have accepted all the principles of democracy and applied them to the systems of their respective countries’ institutions. Illiberal democratic political actors are fearful to apply all the principles of democracy in the systems of their respective countries’ institutions. Refusing to accept all the principles of democracy should be recognized as one among other reasons why illiberal political actors have more often initiated the civil wars and likewise fail to provide the excellent services to their citizens equally. Hence, a liberal democratic form of government shall be a hope to the citizens of the illiberal democratic countries for attaining the peaceful countries and peaceful political actors. This adoption of traditional business principles has captured the fascination of social change activists around the world, and yet, a lack of understanding its characteristics such as value proposition, opportunity, innovation and the creation of value can be observed. At the same time, similar changes in the philanthropic sector are taking place, with the phenomenon of Venture Philanthropy pioneering a new model of financing social change by translating the conventional venture capital approach from the business world to the social sphere, turning philanthropists into social investors. These complementing phenomena show a new relation between the financing and executing side in the social sector and challenge traditional categories such as non-profit vs. for-profit by choosing hybrid organizational forms. As these changes advance, efforts towards the creation of a social capital market that build on these two phenomena can be observed in order to restructure the current system of financing social change, applying principles from the financial markets. These changes challenge the traditional dichotomy of social and economic value that defines our current understanding of capita...

This book will explore the inefficiencies that are created that serve to deny individuals work and shelter in a haphazard and capricious manner. The author examines property rights, including eminent domain, that lets the State take property away with seemingly arbitrary compensation to the owner. Individuals must understand both civil law, codified by statutes, and common law, enshrined in precedential judicial decisions. This book is written for economists and non-economists and has an extensive glossary of economic, political and legal terms. Two items that are not formally treated in other economics of law textbooks are the legal organization of businesses and tax law from an economics perspective.

Lily Maria Konig Safeguarding Nuclear Non-Proliferation

The proliferation of nuclear weapons is one of the most challenging security issues of today. In September 2009 reports of a newly discovered nuclear facility, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, raised the question if Iran is in compliance with the obligations under its Safeguards Agreement, which was concluded with the International Atomic Energy Agency in accordance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The paper seeks to provide a basis for understanding the problematic from an international legal perspective, using international treaty law as tool of analysis. For the interpretation of Iran's rights and obligations the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties is applied on Iran's Safeguards Agreement. Furthermore, the report discusses the overall legitimacy of the non-proliferation regime in general and the application of the non-proliferation rules in relation to Iran in particular. The analysis should be a useful key for accessing the complex system of international regulations, which make out the non-proliferation regime. Actors in the field, as well as anyone interested in better understanding the ongoing debate on a potential nuclear Iran, should find the report of value.
