Pult Aita Linguistic Minorities- A Comparative Analysis

The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is a very complex document due to the great diversity of linguistic situations in Europe. However, thanks to its monitoring system, the treaty has become the most important tool for evaluating linguistic minority policy today. The present thesis aims to explain variation between three contracting parties in compliance with provisions of this treaty. A comparative case study was conducted in order to examine the legal status of linguistic minorities in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. Previous research shows that NGOs play an important role in furthering treaty compliance and effectiveness. In order to understand the reasons for countries' divergent compliance levels, three aspects have been considered: (1) The role of the respective NGOs during the ratification process; (2) the factor of decentralized governance; (3) the use of direct democratic instruments.

DOTUN OGUNKOYA THE ROLE OF FREEDOM IN RELATION

This edition of the monograph with the title, The Role of Freedom in Relation to the Causes of Crises, provides a comprehensive analysis of the causes of socio-political crises in human society. It identifies war as a representative of such societal crises that agitate our thought and for which human beings all over the world, have been making concerted efforts to address. For this reason, it brings to the attention of the readers some of the accounts of the causes of crises in society which are peddled and discussed in the existing literature. It identifies freedom as a prime factor in the eruption of crises in society. It categorizes the denial of freedom as simply a "deprivation of freedom" and with specific examples drawn especially from the author's immediate environment - Nigeria - it goes further to discuss "the role of freedom in relation to the causes of crises", under four broad headings, namely: Political Deprivation, Economic Deprivation, Cultural, and Religious factors. Finally, the work concludes with a submission that, "crises/wars are caused by either the denial or excessive exercise of freedom."

Peter Kropotkin Mutual Aid. A Factor of Evolution

2017 Reprint of 1919 Edition. “Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution” is a 1902 work by Russian anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Kropotkin explores the role of mutually-beneficial cooperation and reciprocity (or "mutual aid") in the animal kingdom and human societies both past and present. It is an argument against the competition-centered theories of so-called social Darwinism, as well as the romantic depictions of cooperation presented by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who argued it was motivated by universal love rather than self-interest. “Mutual Aid” is considered a fundamental text in anarchist communism, presenting a scientific basis for communism alternative to the historical materialism of the Marxists. Many biologists also consider it an important catalyst in the scientific study of cooperation.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisch), course: Problems in Second Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: This term paper will focus on the discussion of the putative maturational constraints for second language acquisition. The age factor is an aspect of first and second language acquisition research which has engendered very much controversy. In the discussion about age-related effects on language acquisition, one can find disagreements as to both the facts and to their possible explanations. The different points of view range from the notion that young learners are in all aspects of language learning more efficient and achieve better results, to the contrary position that older learners are the better learners. In this paper, four of the positions concerning the age factor, which have been listed by Singleton, will be presented because they provide a good overview of the different views on this topic and the respective evidence belonging to them. Many of the differences in the results of various studies are due to the differences in how the results are elicited. The experimental design plays an important role for the outcomes.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with the strategy called "quality-minus-junk" (QMJ). The reader will see that both abnormal returns, characterized as alpha, and excess returns, characterized as returns above the risk-free rate, are consistently high for any of the three major asset-pricing models. This particular thesis is going to go through the main findings and observations that Asness, Frazzini and Pedersen have made in their research on the QMJ factor and is also going to extend on some further examination of QMJ. The upcoming chapter briefly discusses the reason behind using the Gordon Growth Model as the basis of the quality score and the four main quality measures which were used in the design of the QMJ strategy. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 retest the findings by using three years of additional data and its most recent updates in May 2015. In Chapter 3 are tests which were performed for different levels of quality. Chapter 4 will focus on the role of the QMJ factor in pricing other risk factors and Chapter 5 analyzes QMJ for different economic environments. Therefore new aspects will be added to the analysis. In Chapter 6 the readers will see how the QMJ strategy has performed during different levels of the sentiment index and the last Chapter deals with the Q-factor model to see how well it explains the QMJ factor performance. This book deals with role stress perceived by the veterinarians in Kerala. Veterinarians of the Department of Animal Husbandry play a major role is in carrying out various developmental activities in this sector. They have been traditionally involved in treatment of animals and of late they have the additional responsibility of carrying out project work associated with implementation of schemes in the animal husbandry sector in the panchayat where they work. Consequently the responsibility and work load of an average veterinarian has increased considerably and the veterinarian is placed in a position where he has to play more than one role. In such cases if the role occupant is unable to balance the two roles it may lead to inadequate performance of either role, or role stress which could affect the productivity of the veterinarian. Thus from the point of view of the organization it is important to study the nature and type of stressors of the veterinarians in the state and its influence on job and social commitment.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Medicine - Pharmacology, grade: -, , language: English, abstract: Adenoviruses (AdVs) are common pathogens that are a major cause of acute infections of the respiratory and intestinal tracts, as well as the eye. Despite having a distinguished and extensive experimental history, there remain many unanswered questions about how AdVs are recognized and eliminated during infection. In order to advance therapy for infectious and inherited diseases, these challenging questions must be addressed. Here we have examined recognition of AdV by immunologic and serum factors using high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and computational modeling. These factors include human alpha defensin 5 (HD5), human blood coagulation factor X (FX), and factor VII (FVII). We also analyzed the structure of an AdV-based vaccine that is designed to provide protective immunity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Structural analysis and modeling studies on HD5 recognition of AdV implicated a key role for intrinsic disorder in mediating a stabilizing interaction that blocks viral infection. Cryo-EM and functional examination of serum factor binding to AdV showed that FX, a noninflammatory humoral factor of the coagulation cascade, binds to the surface of AdV and becomes a pathogen-associated molecular pattern that, upon viral entry into liver cells, triggers activation of innate immunity via the TLR/NF-κB pathway. In contras...

Asif Saeed, Abid A. Burki Productivity and Economies in Pakistan.s Commercial Banking Sector

In this study we estimate the total factor productivity growth of Pakistan's commercial banking sector for the period 1992 - 2000 by bringing together the supply and demand sides of banking services. We employ the translog cost function that includes inputs like labour, capital, operating cost and deposits. The two outputs of the banking sector considered for analysis are loans, advances and investment, and contra accounts. The study provides estimates for the total factor productivity which has shown an upward trend for the period under consideration. The results obtained suggest that the total factor productivity of Pakistan's commercial banks has been increasing since the start of the various banking sector reforms in the 1990s, but growth has followed a fluctuating pattern. It also determines growth for each year and sheds light on the performance of the banking sector in different periods in the light of different phases of reforms. The decomposition of TFP shows that the scale effect is the most critical factor in total factor productivity growth followed by output effect and technical change effect.

This volume is a collection of papers that explore various areas of common interest between philosophy, computing, and cognition. The book illustrates the rich intrigue of this fascinating recent intellectual story. It begins by providing a new analysis of the ideas related to computer ethics, such as the role in information technology of the so-called moral mediators, the relationship between intelligent machines and warfare, and the new opportunities offered by telepresnece, for example in teaching and learning. The book also ties together the concerns of epistemology and logic, showing, for example, the connections between computers, bio-robotics, and scientific research and between computational programs and scientific discovery. Important results coming from recent computational models of deduction, the dynamic nature of meaning, and the role of reasoning and learning in spatial, visual and exemplar-based compuational frameworks are also addressed. Some stimulating papers carefully study how the interplay between computing and philosophy has also shed new light on the role of rational acceptance in the logic of belief and on the status of old philosophical topics like embodiment and consciousness, the role of information and the problem of realism in the new digital world. Finally, a considerable part of the book addresses the role of intenal and external representations in scientific reasoning and creative inferences as well as the place of manipulation of objects and a...

The study has found that female refugees in refugee camp were exposed to sexual violence, physical violence and socio-economic violence including attempt rape, rape, gang rape, physical injuries, discrimination and stigmatization and denial of access to services. The book also disclosed that male refugees and intimate partners of female refugees were the prime gender based violence perpetrators of female refugees in Mai Ayni refugee camp. Moreover, the study revealed that idleness, economic dependency, physical insecurity, lack of awareness, collapse of social and family structure as well as poor reporting, coordination and legal enforcement mechanisms were identified as causes/risk factors for gender based violence against female refugees in refugee camp. Moreover, men's feeling of 'loss of power' in the camp, which challenges male's identity as superior to female, led male refugees to anger and makes female refugees vulnerable to different forms of gender based violence. Consequently, because of gender based violence, female refugees in refugee camp have short and long lasting damaging consequence on their life in terms of health, physical and psycho-social.

Apoptosis has been recognized as a key mechanism of tumor cell elimination and in cancer, it has been recently assumed even with more importance with the realization that it may be the possible the principle mechanism by which irradiation and chemotherapy kill cancer cells. This study was to explore the role of apoptosis in dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of oral mucosa by detecting apoptotic influencing protein, procaspase-3 and cell death pathway genes, Fas and Fas ligand and antiapoptotic transcriptional factor, NFkB with c-myc oncogen.Forty-two selected cases were included in this retrospective study, twelve cases of oral dysplasia and thirty cases of oral squamus cell carcinoma. The expression of procaspase-3 protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and Fas, Fas ligand, NFkB and c-myc genes were detected by In situ hybridization. This study concluded that failure of apoptosis together with activation of c-myc oncogen and antiapoptotic factor (NFkB) might play an important role in malignant transformation and promote oral tumorigenesis.

Facets of Migration in Contemporary Europe. Interdisciplinary Approaches to Specific Challenges

The literature on migration realities in Europe is usually centered around the role played by the EU on member states' migration policies. In order to offer a comparative cross-country approach, previous research often allows too much to fall through the cracks. Facets of Migration in Contemporary Europe: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Specific Challenges directly addresses this issue. Through its multidisciplinary approach, it includes contributions ranging from policy-oriented chapters dedicated to the role of low-skilled and 'illegal' migrants to the securitization of migration in Europe as well as the role of Diasporas and language policies for the integration of migrants. The central theme of the volume is that experiences of migration in Western European countries can help the emerging countries of immigration in Central and Eastern Europe to improve their migration policies and living conditions.

Tobias Fritsch Actor Models and Digital Natives

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, grade: 1,0, University of Hagen, language: English, abstract: This thesis evaluates the role of actor models with regard to the changes in virtual environments. The most commonly used actor models, the homo economicus and the homo sociologicus as well as the emotional man and several less popular models are compared with regard to their level of explanation for behavior in virtual environment. In this context online communities (i.e. gaming communities) are observed. The research framework and the structural conception of the measurement also are explained in detail. A significant share of the input is based onto qualitative interviews with eight different digital natives, who share a common computer gaming affinity. The analysis includes qualitative interviews with these e-athletes concerning their behavior within online communities. These interviews contain interesting findings about their motivation, especially the difference between virtual and real world social relationships. The analysis shows interesting results, since the players differentiate in between their role as an e-athlete versus their role as a person. This leads to a multi-causal influence for their behavior, which cannot sorely be explained with a single influence factor. Neither the homo economicus nor the homo sociologicus thus can explain their behavior on its own. Therefore this thesis discusses methods to improve the cu...

Jan Gieseler Dynamics of optically levitated nanoparticles in high vacuum

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Physics - Optics, grade: Excellent Cum Laude with Honors, , language: English, abstract: The present thesis investigates the dynamics of optically levitated particles in high vacuum. A levitated nanoparticle in high vacuum constitutes a nanomechanical resonator featuring a small mass and a ultra-high quality factor - significantly higher than that of fabricated nanomechanical resonators, which are approaching fundamental limits of dissipation. The combination of small mass and high quality factor allows for sensing of feeble exotic forces, including gravitational forces, and quantum state preparation. Investigating the quantum behavior of a nanomechanical system and testing the predictions of quantum theory on meso- to macroscopic scales, addresses one of the outstanding challenges of modern physics and will provide answers to fundamental questions on our understanding of the world. The scope of the thesis ranges from a detailed description of the experimental apparatus and proof-of-principle experiments (parametric feedback cooling) to the first observation of phenomena owing to the unique parameters of this novel optomechanical system (thermal nonlinearities). Aside from optomechanics and optical trapping, the topics covered include the dynamics of complex (nonlinear) systems and the experimental and theoretical study of fluctuation theorems, the latter playing a pivotal role in statistical physics.Optically tra...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 5.0 (summa cum laude), Kozminski University, language: English, abstract: Interest in corporate brands and corporate brand management has risen significantly in recent years. Corporate brand management has moved to the key strategic agenda not only for owners/shareholders and top management but also for other stakeholders. The major factor behind that is the modern shareholder value movement. As a result, the main task of management is to maximize shareholder value and consequently, the majority of big companies have shifted to the adoption of shareholder value as the criterion for evaluating strategies and manager's performance (Doyle, 2008, p. 22). Therefore, the main objective of the dissertation is the conceptual and empirical analysis of the corporate brand management process. The study focuses on three industries: Higher Education Institutions (HEI), Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), and Automotive (AUTO). The reason behind the research of such a diverse group of industries is the intent not to show how a corporate brand works in a certain industry but rather to analyze the common factor: the corporate brand in the process of brand management. In order to fulfill the above stated objective, the thesis will answer the following three research questions: 1) What is the role of the corporate brand in brand ...

Liam O Duibhir Prisoners of War. Ballykinlar Interment Camp 1920-1921

Ballykinlar Internment Camp was the first mass internment camp to be established by the British in Ireland during the War of Independence. Situated on the County Down coast and opened in December 1920, it became home to hundreds of Irish men arrested by the British, often on little more than the suspicion of involvement in the IRA.Held for up to a year, and subjected to often brutal treatment and poor quality food in an attempt to break them both physically and mentally, the interned men instead established a small community within the camp. The knowledge and skills possessed by the diverse inhabitants were used to teach classes, and other activities, such as sports, drama and music lessons, helped stave off boredom. In the midst of all these activities the internees also endeavoured to defy their captors with various plans for escape. The story of the Ballykinlar internment camp is on the one hand an account of suffering, espionage, murder and maltreatment, but it is also a chronicle of survival, comradeship and community.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1, University of Vienna (International Development Studies), course: Refugee studies, resettlement, language: English, abstract: This thesis centers on resettlement operations in one of the nine Burmese refugee camps situated along the Thai-Burma border in Thailand, and the social dynamics that influence refugees whether to resettle or not. Thailand is host to Burmese refugees since approximately 20 years, for whom resettlement has become the only durable solution due to the impossibility of return or local integration into Thailand. This thesis is the outcome of a survey which was conducted by UNHCR in the summer of 2010 in Tham Hin camp; the aim of the study was to better understand motivations of refugees opting against resettlement, whose figure stands at approximately 30% of the camp population. As it became apparent, many refugees were withdrawing their resettlement applications due to other family members unable to resettle together, which is due to the complex process and preconditions of registrations of refugees in the camps. Hence even though individually eligible to resettle, many refugees chose to stay behind with their unregistered family members. Migration theories in general have tended to focus very predominantly on economic considerations as to what influences migration decisions; the role that social factors play, be it for migrant w...

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1, University of Leicester (School of Management), language: English, abstract: Scientists use factor models to try to understand the relationship between risk and asset returns and to make estimations of the likely development of the returns in the future (Sharpe 2001, p.1). Today, two of the most renowned factor models to estimate expected returns of an asset or a firm are the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), introduced by Treynor (1962), Sharpe (1964), Lintner (1965) and Mossin (1966), and the three-factor model of Fama and French of 1992 (Bartholdy and Peare 2004, p.408). While the CAPM claims the existence of a positive linear relationship between the volatility/risk (market beta) and expected returns (Bali and Cakici 2004, p.57), Fama and French state that their three-factor model (3FM) has an improved performance in estimating returns as - so they claim - size and book-to-market equity have significant predictive power, too (Fama and French 1992, p.427).

Baro Xaimos: A Novel of the Gypsy Holocaust follows the nearly miraculous survival path of a group of Roma, led by Tobor Mericano, through the Nazi years, including World War II. The novel opens in the 1930’s on the eve of the formation of the Marzahn Camp. This camp was the prototype for a system of concentration camps designed to contain, oppress and ultimately kill all Roma within Nazi occupied Europe. The gypsies manage to escape the traps set by the German government to find a base of operations in the USSR. From there, gypsies are dispatched by Moscow Center to operate as intelligence gatherers and assassins against the Nazis. These brave souls achieve a semblance of normalcy while in a Russia full of intrigue, by marrying, having children and staying on the move. Jan Salma Role of Language in Teaching . Learning of Mathematical Word Problems

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

Praveen Kumar Power factor controller

Power factor correction (PFC) is a technique of counteracting the undesirable effects of electric loads that create a power factor that is less than one. Power factor correction may be applied either by an electrical power transmission utility to improve the stability and efficiency of the transmission network or correction may be installed by individual electrical customers to reduce the costs charged to them by their electricity supplier. In order to improve transmission efficiency, power factor correction research has become a hot topic. Many control methods for the Power Factor Correction (PFC) have been proposed. This book describes the design and development of a power factor corrector using PIC (Programmable Interface Controller) microcontroller chip. This involves measuring the power factor value from the load using PIC and proper algorithm to determine and trigger sufficient switching capacitors in order to compensate excessive reactive components, thus bringing power factor near to unity.
