Insecticides not only kill the pest insects but also badly affect their natural enemies. Chrysopid larvae are useful predators of various economically important insect pests like aphid, jassid, white fly etc. Toxicity of six insecticides viz., Talstar10EC (Bifenthrin), Endosulfan35EC (Thiodan), Trebon30EC (Etofenprox), Confidor200SL (Imidachloprid), Polo 500SC (Diafenthiuron) and Monocrotophos 40 WSC (Monocrotophos) and two control treatments, replicated thrice, each with two concentrations C1=0.025% and C2= 0.05% was observed against cotton jassid and its predator Chrysoperla carnea (Steph.). Each pesticide was applied @ 1.4 ml on third instar larvae of the predator and known number of jassids with Pottar Spray Tower in three different modes. The experiment was laid out in CRD in the lab. It was found that Monocrotophos and Talstar were highly toxic giving 96-100% and 80-90% kill of the predatory larvae, respectively. Confidor and Endosulfan were proved moderately toxic while Polo and Trebon found to be somewhat selective in their use against the predator. However, all the insecticides effectively controlled cotton jassid.

Acetamiprid poses low risks to the ecosystem because of its rapid dissipation and low bound residue in the environment. The analysis should help one who is especially working in the field of residue analysis to find safer insecticides to be recommended to the farmer’s use in field.

Depending on the physical and chemical characteristics of soil, adsorption of inorganic components of leachates from preservative treated wood can limit movement of contaminants to other compartments (soil as a sink) and reduce their toxic effect by limiting bioavailability. Estimated adsorption maxima of Cu CCA in organic and clay soils were the same or higher than for Cu ACQ and Cu CA. The presence of preservative components in the soil decreased the yield and increased their accumulation in ryegrass. Uptake of As, Cu, and Cr in rye grass was just as well predicted by total soil content as with any of the bioavailable estimates. ACQ leachate showed higher toxicity to germination of ryegrass seeds and Daphnia magna toxicity; it had a lower effect on ryegrass growth than CCA leachate. Reaction of ACQ leachate with sandy soil components resulted in reduced toxicity to Daphnia magna. None of the contaminated soils had a measurable effect on earthworms, although there was some preservative uptake in the worms. CCA and ACQ had similar effects on soil microflora/fauna respiration. CA leachate had lower toxicity to Daphnia magna and similar toxicity to other organisms as ACQ.

Our current investigation verifies for the first time, the protective effects of Polygonum bistorta and Tannic Acid against model hepatotoxicant in rats. The hepatoprotective action is likely related to its potent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. Garlic (Allium sativum L., Liliaceae) is a nature’s boon to mankind which has played an important dietary and therapeutic medicinal role throughout the history of mankind. Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin and has been associated with Alzheimer's disease causality for decades. Study demonstrated the ameliorative effect of garlic extract against aluminium-induced toxicity in rat model. Results reveal dose dependent response with the administration of therapeutic agent. Treatment with extract of Garlic revealed that it was significantly effective in recouping most of the biochemical alterations produced by the toxicant. Markers of liver injury and oxidative stress i.e. AST, ALT, ALAD,LPO and GSH showed significant recoupment with the therapy. Curative treatment with therapeutic agent prevented the leakage of AST, and ALT indicating stabilization of plasma membrane as well as repair of hepatic, renal and cerebral tissues damage.

Pyrethroids are often regarded as a modern of 'safe' insecticides, because they are rapidly metabolised in mammals and ecosystems, which explains their low toxicity.The natural pyrethroid compounds, pyrethrins, were already known in China in the first century AD. The six synthetic insecticides (Spintoram 120 SL @ 60 ml /acre, Dimethoate 40% EC @ 400 ml /acre, Acetameprid20SL @ 125 ml/acre and Profenophos500 EC @ 400 ml/acre, Diafenthiuron 500 SC @ 200 ml and Pyriproxifin 10.8% EC @ 400 ml) were used as treatment and a water as a control. The maximum percentage mortality was recorded in prophenophos 90%,followed by pyriproxifin 85, dimethoat 82%, spintoram 85,diafentheuron 84% ,acetamiprid 74%, and respectively.) So, these results showed that (acetameprid) is less toxic to jassid because it causes less mortality after 72 hours while profenophos is highly toxic because it causes 90 % mortality in 72 hours. Herbicidal toxicity on fish with special reference to Glyphosate and Almix was studied based on ultrastructural changes, histopathological lesions, histochemical alterations, changes in enzymatic activities in some organs of teleostean carnivorous fishes e.g., Channa punctatus and Anabas testudineus at the dose of sublethal concentrations 4.0 mg/l and 66.66 mg/l respectively for a period of 45 days under laboratory condition (aquaria) and 750 g/acre and 8 g/acre respectively in the field condition (pond). The degree of toxicity of Glyphosate and Almix in the laboratory condition was much more severe than in the field condition as observed through ultramicroscopic, histological, histochemical and enzymological studies.

The water framework directive has given new emphasis to the protection of the ecological status of receiving waters, as well as their chemical status. In traditional system of Indian medicine, the whole plant of Phyllanthus acidus L. Skeels (Euphorbiaceae) has been widely employed for the treatment of variety of disease including inflammation and hepatic ailments. With this view, the present study was undertaken to investigate the hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory potential of Phyllanthus acidus. The biochemical and histological changes were monitored to evaluate the extent of hepatic toxicity and inflammation. The methanolic extracts of Phyllanthus acidus at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg, showed a significant protective activity in rats against thioacetamide and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity. The same extract also showed promising anti-inflammatory activity. Phytochemical and chromatographic studies revealed the presence of flavonoids and phenolics in the extract, which suggest that these constituents might be associated with exhibited biological properties.

Cotton, “the white gold” is an immensely important crop for the sustainable economy of India and the livelihood of Indian farming communities. At present India ranks first in global cotton area with 11.1 million hectares and second in global cotton production with 5.304 million tonnes . Much of this success owes itself to cultivation of transgenic Bt cotton which commenced in India since March 2002. Bt cotton, primarily designed to manage the bollworm menace in cotton, has been successful to a great extent, as is evident from the reduced consumption of insecticides in cotton across the country. However, several issues still need be addressed, such as managing the Bt resistance in bollworm and emergence of sucking insects as major pests. While acknowledging the contribution of the Bt technology in cotton pest management, a better integration with other integrated pest management strategies might hold the key to sustainable pest management in cotton.

The aim of study to evaluate the effects of three different compounds including; Bensultap, Pirimophos- methyl, and Abamectin against major piercing sucking insect pests (Bemisia tabaci,Aphis craccicvora, Thrips tabaci, and Empoasca lypica) attacking kidney bean plants. Besides Assessment of the persistence of pesticide residues against the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis Moreover, the side effects of pesticidal applications on morphological characters and chemical constituents of phaseolus vulgaris plants were also involved in the present study. The results showed that, the efficiency of the tested materials against sucking insects attacking kidney bean plants could be arranged in descending order as follows: Bensultap, Pirimiphos-methyl, and Abamectin.According to the obtained LT50 values, Bensultap had the longest residual effect followed by Pirimiphos-methyl and then ending with Abamectin at the two experimental periods, respectively

Aubergine is an important dietary vegetable grown all over the country. The crop is subjected to high degree of instability in production,mainly on account of losses caused by different insect pests at different stages of the crop. Meghalaya (part of North Eastern Himalayas)is highly weather dynamic which are most conducive for development of different insect species and their natural enemies. Recently it has been observed that minor pests are becoming major in some commercial crops. Therefore,periodical surveillance may help to recognize the relative economic importance of different pests on that crop. Nearly 25.82 to 92.50% damage is attributed due to shoot and fruit borer. Management of this notorious pest by using conventional insecticides and synthetic pyrethroids has been found effective. However,indiscriminate use of insecticides has resulted in development of resistance,environmental pollution,bio-accumulation and bio-magnifications of toxic residues which leads to ecological imbalance. Considering these entire quandaries and to keep uncontaminated biodiversity,the study was conducted to evaluate some Eco-friendly insecticides as well as pheromone for their bio-efficacy.

Whilst the chemotherapeutic success of platinum is undeniable, it is by no means the perfect drug. It is not effective against many common types of cancer, drug resistance is common and it has a deplorable range of side effects, which can include nerve damage, hair loss and nausea. To overcome these limitations, some compounds based on ruthenium have been developed and tested against cancer cell lines. These compounds tend to cause fewer side effects compared to platinum drugs. Ruthenium compounds represent one of the great success stories of metals in medicine. Two ruthenium compounds are currently undergoing clinical evaluation as anticancer drugs NAMI-A and KP1019. A great deal of the remaining ruthenium complexes, these efforts are continue today with increased realization that new strategies are needed to overcome issues of toxicity and resistances inherent treatment by the ruthenium anticancer agents. The present study deals with the new strategies for the development of novel ruthenium compounds and screened for the in vivo anticancer activity against transplantable murine tumor cell lines.

MEMS based micropropulsion devices are becoming highly demanding for the repositioning of micro/nano satellites. Microthruster is the solution for the re-orbiting of small satellites whereas the microvalve controls the propellant flow and micropump keeps the propellant pressure constant. The microvalve consists of a silicon membrane, two holes made in silicon wafer and a commercially available piezoelectric stack. The silicon membrane has a boss tip at the center of top side and is structured using conventional KOH bulk micromachining.The membrane is directly attached to the piezoelectric stack actuator which moves in an out-of-plane motion against the bottom structure.The microvalve developed here is a normally closed, low cost, capable of controlling the flow of gases as well as liquids, leak tight and can be used for high pressure application. The micropump developed and presented in this dissertation is silicon based valveless diffuser /nozzle elements to rectify the fluid flow. Piezoelectric actuation is used in this case for diaphragm vibration. This book presents the detail design and development procedures of those devices with satisfactory test results.
