Depending on the physical and chemical characteristics of soil, adsorption of inorganic components of leachates from preservative treated wood can limit movement of contaminants to other compartments (soil as a sink) and reduce their toxic effect by limiting bioavailability. Estimated adsorption maxima of Cu CCA in organic and clay soils were the same or higher than for Cu ACQ and Cu CA. The presence of preservative components in the soil decreased the yield and increased their accumulation in ryegrass. Uptake of As, Cu, and Cr in rye grass was just as well predicted by total soil content as with any of the bioavailable estimates. ACQ leachate showed higher toxicity to germination of ryegrass seeds and Daphnia magna toxicity; it had a lower effect on ryegrass growth than CCA leachate. Reaction of ACQ leachate with sandy soil components resulted in reduced toxicity to Daphnia magna. None of the contaminated soils had a measurable effect on earthworms, although there was some preservative uptake in the worms. CCA and ACQ had similar effects on soil microflora/fauna respiration. CA leachate had lower toxicity to Daphnia magna and similar toxicity to other organisms as ACQ.

This book assesses possible health risk of using DDT on Khat and farmers’ perception towards toxicity of pesticides sprayed on Khat. Personal interviews were completed with a random and purposive sample of 70 farmers, 5 health workers/officers/ and 5 agricultural workers /officers/. The observed study shows there is no any personal protective device (PPD) in the woreda at all, most farmers in the study area have no access to technical information on proper use of pesticides. Results of interviews and questionnaires showed that majority of farmers in Haromaya area use DDT and other unknown pesticides to grow their Khat and majority of them mix DDT and other pesticides, especially malathion. Most of the farmers are illiterate and could not read and understand instruction on pesticides packages. Most of the interviewed farmers are chewers of Khat and have more than 10 years experience in spraying pesticides on Khat. Local markets, pesticides imported through smuggling, local health and agricultural bureaus were seen to be sources of DDT and other pesticides used on Khat.

Herbicidal toxicity on fish with special reference to Glyphosate and Almix was studied based on ultrastructural changes, histopathological lesions, histochemical alterations, changes in enzymatic activities in some organs of teleostean carnivorous fishes e.g., Channa punctatus and Anabas testudineus at the dose of sublethal concentrations 4.0 mg/l and 66.66 mg/l respectively for a period of 45 days under laboratory condition (aquaria) and 750 g/acre and 8 g/acre respectively in the field condition (pond). The degree of toxicity of Glyphosate and Almix in the laboratory condition was much more severe than in the field condition as observed through ultramicroscopic, histological, histochemical and enzymological studies.

In this book a heteropteran plant bug, Iphita limbata, was taken as a model organism to study the biochemical and histological effects of carbaryl on the male reproductive system of organisms. The structure of the male reproductive system of I. limbata was also studied in detail. The results of this study can be used an a pointer in evaluating the toxicity of carbaryl exposure to non-target organisms and its importance in assessing the public and environmental health risks.

The water framework directive has given new emphasis to the protection of the ecological status of receiving waters, as well as their chemical status. This emphasis on ecological quality is the principal driver for the TREES project, which is focused on both the toxicity of steel industry effluents and the reduction of this toxicity by innovative treatment techniques. Traditionally, the impact of iron and steel industry streams on the aquatic environment has been evaluated by comparing the concentration of the pollutant in the receiving water with environmental quality standards defined by current legislation. This method, unfortunately, does not provide information on how the effluent affects the biodiversity of the receiving waters. That is achieved only through ecotoxicological tests. The selection of the most suitable tests for assessing the ecotoxicity of steel works' effluents and understanding their effects on the aquatic environment has been analysed in great detail. Recently, attention has been focused on untreated/treated wastewater toxicity and on appropriate treatments to reduce this toxicity.

Present study deals with the growth and antioxidant enzyme response in Gmelina arborea under Aluminium and manganese toxicity inoculated with AM fungi. Two AM fungal species namely Glomus intraradices and Gigaspora margarita were used as AM inoculum singly or in combination. Results revealed that AMF modulates the antioxidant and non antioxidant enzyme activities which help Gmelina to overcome oxidative stress caused by HM. In present work, interaction between AM fungi and Gmelina under heavy metal toxicity showed AM fungal species increase the soil properties and minimize the toxic effects of heavy metals by enhancing the growth and vigour of Gmelina plants. This study can also be used for rehabilitation of HM contaminated sites (mining sites) by using AM inoculated Gmelina plants. AMF can accelerate the revegetation of several degraded lands, such as coal mines, metal mines or waste sites.

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the safety of the butanol fractionated extract of Asparagus africanus Lam. plant by determining its potential toxicity after single and repeated dose administration in mice. For the acute study, Swiss Albino mice were divided into three groups Group-I, Group-II & Group-III the butanol fraction extract of the plant in single doses of 1000, 3000 and 5000mg/kg body weight, respectively. General behavioral adverse effects and mortality were determined for up to 14 days. In the sub-chronic dose study, the extract was administered orally to two groups of mice at doses of 300 and 600mg/kg body weight/day for 42 days. Selected hematological and biochemical parameters followed by morphological pathology changes were determined after 42 days of daily administration. In the acute study, the butanol fractionated extract of Asparagus africanus plant did not caused dose-dependent general behavioral adverse effects, body weight change and mortality.

Repetitions did not exceed 6-fold. Response assessment was classified according to the Response Evaluating Criteria in Solid Tumours. CT/ MRI scans were performed as baseline before, during and after the end of treatment, and monthly ultrasound images for follow-up measurements. Toxicity (World Health Organization criteria) was measured using blood and urine tests of renal, hepatic and bone marrow function.Νone patient was achieved complete response[CR], partial response[PR] was shown in 9/14 (65%), and disease stabilization[SD] in 2/14 (14%) patients; three patients (21.0%) did not respond [PD]. Grade 1 erythro-, leuko- and thrombo-cytopenia occurred in 8 cases, grade 2-3 in 4 cases and blood transfusion (grade 4) in 2.In unresectable metastatic liver lesions positive for somatostatin receptors repeated, trans-hepatic high doses of Lu-177-DOTA-TATE show an effective therapeutic outcome. In view of the toxic side effects exerted by Amphotericin B and physiological roles assigned to NO, present study examined the in vivo effect of selected doses of Amphotericin B on NO pathway parameters in animal Albino rat model.

The current study was undertaken to investigate time-dependent toxic effect of sub-lethal dose of orally administered Aluminium Chloride in male rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus) on the histology of renal tisues. Animals were divided into control and treated groups. Animals of treated group received Aluminium Chloride at the dose rate of 25 mg/kg disolved in 0.9% saline solution after every 48 hours, for 15 and 30 days respectively while animals of control group were given 0.9% saline solution only. Animals were dissected with the interval of 15 days. Renal tissues were processed and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin for Histological studies. Histological changes induced in the renal tissues of treated animals were observed. The basic purpose of this research was to administer the toxicity of Aluminium Cholride in Kidney of rabbits.

Garlic (Allium sativum L., Liliaceae) is a nature’s boon to mankind which has played an important dietary and therapeutic medicinal role throughout the history of mankind. Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin and has been associated with Alzheimer's disease causality for decades. Study demonstrated the ameliorative effect of garlic extract against aluminium-induced toxicity in rat model. Results reveal dose dependent response with the administration of therapeutic agent. Treatment with extract of Garlic revealed that it was significantly effective in recouping most of the biochemical alterations produced by the toxicant. Markers of liver injury and oxidative stress i.e. AST, ALT, ALAD,LPO and GSH showed significant recoupment with the therapy. Curative treatment with therapeutic agent prevented the leakage of AST, and ALT indicating stabilization of plasma membrane as well as repair of hepatic, renal and cerebral tissues damage.

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of organic acid on aluminium toxicity in rice rhizosphere. Interrelationship of organic acid and aluminum concentration in soil solution of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere of rice (var Satabdi and IR 64) was studied by growing rice plant in plastic pot containing 500 g soil. Three organic acids viz. tartaric, oxalic and citric acids were identified and quantified rice rhizosphere and non-rhizoshere. Organic acids were found to be more in rhizosphere and early stage of crop growth, decrease sharply after 30 days of germination and found in negligible quantity after 45 days of germination. Regression analysis reveled a significant and negative relationship between solution aluminium and organic acid. Satabdi showed higher organic acid concentration in rhizosphere leading to lower root and shoot aluminium concentration and consequently significantly higher dry matter production as well as root volume compared IR 64. The finding established that organic acid can effectively reduce aluminium concentration in soil solution resulting into better crop growth.

The collection and analysis of food consumption data is widely used as a parameter to monitor the health status of animals, especially in rats, in a variety of areas. However, the feeding behavior in laboratory dogs has not been described in detail and there is only little literature available in the public domain. The aim of this study was to determine the normal feeding behavior of untreated laboratory dogs during the pretest period and to create a feeding profile for comparison with the main study phase. Observations were made that identified any modified patterns of feeding behavior, which can be a helpful guideline for the dogs’ state of wellness, especially if no other symptoms are present. Sixteen two to four-week oral toxicity studies with a four-week recovery period over the last three years were analyzed. In general, deviations were seen from the normal feeding pattern, especially in the high dose group and sometimes even in lower dose groups regardless of the presentation of other clinical symptoms. Overall, the results of this study show, that the feeding behavior of dogs is a helpful and sensitive tool to evaluate the health status of laboratory dogs.

In traditional system of Indian medicine, the whole plant of Phyllanthus acidus L. Skeels (Euphorbiaceae) has been widely employed for the treatment of variety of disease including inflammation and hepatic ailments. With this view, the present study was undertaken to investigate the hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory potential of Phyllanthus acidus. The biochemical and histological changes were monitored to evaluate the extent of hepatic toxicity and inflammation. The methanolic extracts of Phyllanthus acidus at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg, showed a significant protective activity in rats against thioacetamide and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity. The same extract also showed promising anti-inflammatory activity. Phytochemical and chromatographic studies revealed the presence of flavonoids and phenolics in the extract, which suggest that these constituents might be associated with exhibited biological properties.
