The Transformation Book, which belongs to Pessoa's pre-heteronymic period, contains a series of fragments written in English, Portuguese, and French, none of which were ever published during Pessoa's lifetime.Conceived by Pessoa in 1908, a year of great social and cultural transformation in Portugal, The Transformation Book was designed to reflect and advance social and cultural transformation in Portugal and beyond. Moving between a number of literary forms, including poetry, fiction, and satire as well as essays on politics, philosophy, and psychiatry, The Transformation Book marks one of the fundamental stages in Pessoa's elaboration of a new conception of literary space, one that he came to express as a "drama in people." Alexander Search, Pantaleão, Jean Seul de Méluret, and Charles James Search are the four "pre-heteronyms" to which the texts of The Transformation Book are attributed. These four figures constitute a plural literary microcosm - a world that Pessoa makes, but that is occupied by a multiplicity of authors - and clearly anticipate the emergence of Pessoa's heteronyms. As the singular result of an intersection of Pessoa's personal intellectual trajectory with his hopes for fomenting cultural transformation, The Transformation Book makes for a unique contribution to Pessoa's ever-growing published oeuvre.Although some of the texts conceived as part of the Transformation Book have previously been published in isolation o...

This book examines the changing mechanisms of social stratification during the market transition since the end of the 1970s in urban China. Unlike most market transition literature, my property transformation perspective stresses the importance of incorporating marketization, ownership restructuring, as well as state politics into a theoretical framework simultaneously by investigating the wealth accumulation and wealth disparity among different social group and organizations. Post-socialist transformation is a property transformation process in which public assets are reallocated, reevaluated and reorganized. There are two trajectories of property transformation: housing privatization and ownership restructuring of public enterprises. Because these transformations are orchestrated and carried out by incumbent power holders, they create greater wealth disparity between cadres and ordinary workers, and between state-owned work organizations and private work organizations. Mainly drawing on three datasets from the Chinese Household Income Project Survey in 1988, 1995 and 2002 in urban China, I find sufficient empirical evidence for my property transformation perspective.

All countries aim to improve housing conditions for their citizens but many have been forced by the financial crisis to reduce government expenditure. Social housing is at the crux of this tension. Policy-makers, practitioners and academics want to know how other systems work and are looking for something written in clear English, where there is a depth of understanding of the literature in other languages and direct contributions from country experts across the continent. Social Housing in Europe combines a comparative overview of European social housing written by scholars with in-depth chapters written by international housing experts. The countries covered include Austria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands and Sweden, with a further chapter devoted to CEE countries other than Hungary. The book provides an up-to-date international comparison of social housing policy and practice. It offers an analysis of how the social housing system currently works in each country, supported by relevant statistics. It identifies European trends in the sector, and opportunities for innovation and improvement. These country-specific chapters are accompanied by topical thematic chapters dealing with subjects such as the role of social housing in urban regeneration, the privatisation of social housing, financing models, and the impact of European Union state aid regulations on the definitions and financing of social housing.

In general, transformations are performed "top-down" by applying and resolving an existing transformation rule, which is supported by specific parameters to a transformation task. In the present case, however, we do not know this transformation rule. So the task remains to quantify the parameters of the transformation, initially unresolved. The transformation approach allows mapping of given motif structures from orthogonal Cartesian coordinate systems in curvilinear coordinate systems.

Given current projections of population and household numbers, housing has become arguably the most important issue in planning. Likewise, planning raises arguably the most important long term issues in housing, given the environmental consequences of urban development and the use of the home."Homes, Cities and Neighbourhoods" documents the evolution of typical urban landscapes from 1900 to the present with an emphasis on contemporary issues and practice. In doing this, the book examines in detail: the role of planning in the light of different interpretations of social change; quantity and quality in housing production; urban design in relation to housing and residential areas; and finally, the management of neighbourhoods. This book is intended for all those interested in the interaction between planning, housing markets and the urban environment in Britain.

This timely book addresses key challenges faced by policy makers and the house-building industry in a post-credit crunch world. It examines the implications for households, the housing market, the economy, as well as for government's policy choices. Challenges of the Housing Economy: an international perspective brings together experts from around the world to examine recent housing market trends. The contributions reveal common long-term trends in housing markets worldwide. Despite differences in supply conditions and the role of planning, there is a trend toward rising house prices that has created significant barriers to home ownership for young households while increasing the wealth of older generations. The financial crisis had a differential impact on housing markets but in many countries where mortgage finance became severely constrained, house prices fell and there was a dramatic fall in housing construction. The falls in house prices in these countries have ostensibly improved affordability but the housing markets have been dominated by the lowering of loan to values applicable to new mortgages which has further raised the hurdles to potential first-time purchasers. At the same time as young households are increasingly rationed out of owner-occupation, public sector expenditure cut-backs in many countries result in limited new social housing. Instead, value for money imperatives will mean new funding models for affordable housing that require greater use of public-private partnerships. The private rented sector could potentially meet the demand for the new generation of long-term renters. However, there are doubts – in the UK at least – that this sector will be able to expand significantly or provide an appropriate type and standard of housing. This is an essential advanced text for students and researchers of land economy and land management; property and real estate; housing policy; and urban studies.

God never intended for us to act more like Jesus. Instead we are admonished over and over to try harder to live up to the standards we see in the New Testament. But anyone who has tried this for very long has probably watched their growth grind down to a halt. They may even dismiss transformation as purely visionary. The truth is: Transformation is highly accessible. Transformation can be fostered intentionally. God has given us multiple points of intervention. Life-long growth and change are really possible. We need to learn how to engage with God so He can do in us what we cannot do for ourselves. In Transformation By Design you will learn about: Six Primary Causes of transformation. Four Primary Aspects of participating in the process. Four Major Contexts needed to foster transformation.

A global look at the reasons behind the recent economic collapse, and the responses to it The speculative bubble in the housing market began to burst in the United States in 2007, and has been followed by ruptures in virtually every asset market in almost every country in the world. Each country proposed a range of policy initiatives to deal with its crisis. Policies that focused upon stabilizing the housing market formed the cornerstone of many of these proposals. This internationally focused book evaluates the genesis of the housing market bubble, the global viral contagion of the crisis, and the policy initiatives undertaken in some of the major economies of the world to counteract its disastrous affects. Unlike other books on the global crisis, this guide deals with the housing sector in addition to the financial sector of individual economies. Countries in many parts of the world were players in either the financial bubble or the housing bubble, or both, but the degree of impact, outcome, and responses varied widely. This is an appropriate time to pull together the lessons from these various experiences. Reveals the housing crisis in the United States as the core of the meltdown Describes the evolution of housing markets and policies in the run-up to the crisis, their impacts, and the responses in European and Asian countries Compares experiences and linkages across countries and points to policy implications and research lessons drawn from these experiences Filled with the insights of well-known contributors with strong contacts in practice and academia, this timely guide discusses the history and evolution of the recent crisis as local to each contributor's part of the world, and examines its distinctive and common features with that of the U.S., the trajectory of its evolution, and the similarities and differences in policy response.

The book analyses the impact of globalization on the ability of the Westphalian state to regulate the use of small arms and retain the monopoly over the legitimate use of force. The study highlights the issues and challenges impacting the ability of the state in Africa in particular in combating illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW). The Study does link the illicit proliferation of SALW in Africa to among other factors the proxy wars on the continent during the cold war and in its aftermath. This is due to the fact that excess surplus of arms especially in Eastern Europe were readily available to criminal groups with minimal regulation. The study identifies the impact of illicit SALW on the Great Lakes Region of Africa with emphasis on Kenya and Uganda. A critical analysis of the implementation of the Nairobi Protocol is conducted.A comparative analysis is made between the small arms regulatory framework of the EU with that under the Nairobi Protocol. The author contends that the small arms and light weapons industry is the least regulated globally. The study calls for a global consensus and action towards the enactment of an Arms Trade Treaty.

Housing is a key issue that normally forefront the scene when considering challenges of urbanization and urban growth. It is a fundamental aspect of human life and a major factor in delivering healthy and attractive communities. Increasing interest is now shown towards the study of how people think of their housing and how it affects their lives. Therefore, measuring the housing quality has become an important tool to assess the efficiency of housing provision and the extent to which people are satisfied with it. This research is about examining housing quality and exploring the set of aspects through which it influences people’s quality of life (QOL). It stems out of a general concern about the state of life in cities and the general factors that shape and outline such life. The research aims to critically investigate housing quality and the impact it has on QOL experienced by residents. It employs an integrated conception of housing quality that poses three types of qualities: quality of provision, quality of context and quality of dwelling, and explores the implications of these qualities, in order to provide an overarching understanding of the influences of housing on QOL.

Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing population growth after centuries of population stagnation attributable to the slave trade and colonization. The region’s population, in fact increased from 100 million in 1900 to 770 million in 2005. The latest UN projections published in March 2007, envisaged a figure of 1.5 to 2 billion inhabitants to be reached between the present and 2050 (CEPED, 2008). The population growth poses a lot of housing challenges for Governments. Some governments have explored industrialized building systems (IBS) – PREFAB HOUSES to address the housing shortage. The social and economic factors in these countries have impeded the success of these initiatives. This book uses successful and unsuccessful case studies of prefab housing projects embarked on by governments globally to ascertain the strength of the Prefab housing interventions suggested by thought leaders in the housing space as a means of addressing the housing shortage in low-income countries. This book also uses a survey to gauge the interests of the growing middle income population in Prefab Houses. This book will be useful to housing policy analysts, government ministers and urban managers.

The purpose of this research is to establish if the residential property prices in Nairobi city are consistent with the economic fundamentals. The study uses stepwise regression modelling to establish the relationship between house prices and the economic fundamentals. The findings of the study indicate that there is a positive relationship between house prices and economic fundamentals like population growth, rate of inflation and the level of money supply. Surprisingly, a negative relationship is found to exist between the costs of construction and the residential house prices. Other variables, which are the gross domestic product and rate of interest, are removed from the regression during analysis, an indication that they do not have any influence on the residential house prices. Further, the study finds that with exception of population growth, house prices' are less responsive to the variations in the rate of inflation and the level of money supply in the economy. A key finding in this study is that the house prices in Nairobi city are not supported by the gross domestic product, interest rate and the costs of construction.

Housing is ranked high among other human needs but its delivery is usually insufficient in terms of number of stocks. If a significant number of the available ones are not occupied, it might cause unwanted waste of government resources. This study aimed at identifying the reasons for such non-occupancy in public housing, in Ondo State, Nigeria, through user-satisfaction survey on cultural aspects. Hypothesizing that lack of cultural sensitivity in design and planning affects significantly on public housing non-occupancy, three public housing estates were investigated in three local governments. From literature review, eight contextually significant cultural variables were selected for investigation namely: kinship relations, relaxation, food preparation, identity, security, environment and housing management, privacy, and service provisions. Results showed that the residents were satisfied with four of them, namely, kinship relations, food preparation, environment and housing management, and service provisions but not with the others. This study insisted that careful considerations on selected context specific cultural variables are important during housing design and planning.

The increasing complexity of homes, the use of innovative materials and technologies, and the increased population in high-hazard areas of the United States have introduced many challenges to the building industry and design profession as a whole. These challenges call for the development and continual improvement of efficient engineering methods for housing applications as well as for the education of designers in the uniqueness of housing as a structural design problem. This text is an initial effort to document and improve the unique structural engineering knowledge related to housing design and performance. It compliments current design practices and building code requirements with value-added technical information and guidance. In doing so, it supplements fundamental engineering principles with various technical resources and insights that focus on improving the understanding of conventional and engineered housing construction.

Based on extensive archival research and, in particular, on documents of the Central Committee of the VKP(b), TsIK and SNK of the USSR and RSFSR, VSNKh, NKVD, and other institutions, this book analyses the aims and methods of pre-World War II urban housing policies in the Soviet Union. Among the issues covered are the principles of the Soviet approach to private and communal housing, the role of the state security organs in the administration and distribution of accommodation, different types of early Soviet lodging (communal houses, family flats, Soviet Houses and Hotels, etc.), the reasons for the abandonment of cooperative housing as well as for the restrictions on building private cottages, and the role of housing for enforcing certain types of behaviour and labour desired by the Soviet government. The study, for the first time in Russian language, describes in some detail the so-called New Housing Policy largely ignored in Soviet historiography.

The movement away from traditional rented approaches to meeting the housing needs of those on modest incomes has taken on new momentum in the latest economic cycle. This book answers some of the questions around affordable housing and low cost home ownership, and whether these intermediate tenures have the potential to play a longer term role in achieving sustainable housing markets. The editors clarify the principles on which the development of affordable housing and intermediate tenures has been based; analyse the policy instruments used to implement these ideas; and make a preliminary assessment of their longer tem value to households and governments alike. Making Housing More Affordable: the role of intermediate tenures brings together an evidence base for researchers and policy makers as they assess past experience and work to understand future options. The book draws mainly on experience of the intermediate housing market in England but also on examples of policies that have been implemented across the world. It clarifies both the challenges and the achievements of governments in providing a well operating intermediate market that can help meet the fundamental goal of ‘a decent home for every household at a price within their means’. The first section outlines the principles and practice of intermediate housing and examines the instruments and mechanisms by which it has been provided internationally. The next section estimates who might benefit from being in intermediate housing and projects the take-up of different products in the future. Section III examines the supply side and Section IV introduces some case studies of who gets what. The final section looks at how effectively the intermediate market operates over the economic cycle.

Further, γ-TMT gene were introduced for improving the α-tocopherol contents in this plant. As a result, the α-tocopherol content increased in in aerial and subterrenian parts of the transformed Codonopsis lanceolata by over expressing the γ-TMT gene. Antioxidant activities of transgenic and control plants using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) analysis and measurement of phenolic compounds, as well as photosynthetic performance were also investigated to ascertain the relationship between changes in the phytochemical profile and photosynthesis rate due to γ-TMT gene overexpression in transgenic plants.

Social exclusion is directly interlinked with caste discrimination and untouchability which has resulted in the educational exclusion. Thus without elimination of all forms of caste based discrimination in the societies, it is not possible to apply and achieve the inclusive education in Nepal. There is functional relationship among society, education and social transformation. Progressive function of education focuses on the transformation of society from its status quo through abolishing mal-cultures and malpractices. As Nepal is in the transitional phase of state restructuring and transformation, it is high time to think seriously on the educational issues of Dalit communities by addressing them through categorizing their issues into two broad perspectives i.e. practical and strategic issues.

"Public housing" is often used as a generic term to refer to all publicly assisted housing, but the term "public housing" actually refers to a specific federal program. Created in 1937, the low-rent public housing program was the first major federal rental housing assistance program. The program initially subsidized the construction, and later the ongoing operation and maintenance, of multifamily rental housing properties for low-income families. While public housing is a federally created and funded program, the properties are owned and managed at the local level by quasi-governmental public housing authorities (PHAs) under contract with the federal government. Given this unique federal-local relationship, the program is governed in part by federal rules and regulations and in part by policies set at the local level.

This book provides an important new contribution to debates around housing policy and its impact on community cohesion. There has never been a more prescient time to discuss these concepts: the book provides an interpretation of housing, race and community cohesion in a highly politicized and fluid policy context. It is designed to initiate discussion and debate but this should not be esoteric and limited to a group of academics. Rather the objective is to bridge academic and policy audiences in the hope that this fusion provides a basis for a new agenda to discuss these topics. Race and community have been key features of social housing policy over the last 20 years with many high-profile interventions, from the proactive approach by the Housing Corporation to support black and minority ethnic housing associations, to the influential Cantle Report documenting segregation in towns and cities following riots, and the National Housing Federation led Race & Housing Inquiry leading to sector wide recommendations to achieve equality. However, volume of policy interventions and reports has not been matched by academic outputs that co-ordinate, integrate and critically analyse 'race', housing and community. Housing, Race & Community Cohesion is the first systematic overview of 'race', housing and community during this tumultuous period. The material presented is robust and research based but also directly engages with issues around policy and delivery. It is designed to reflect the interests both of the academic research community and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic. It is not rooted to specific policy interventions that could quickly date but instead focuses on developing new ways to analyse difficult issues that will help both students and practitioners now and in the future.

This work is about the life of an unnamed heroine in the trilogy of a Turkish woman writer, Emine Sevgi Ozdamar, who is a representative of Turkish Immigration Literature in Germany. Her works, however, are different from the works of other immigrant writers. One reason is the language Ozdamar uses in her works. The language of her novels is a mixture of German and Turkish. Her literal translation of Turkish phrases and idioms to German is one of the distinctive characteristics of her novels. Content and context of the novels are also opposite the stereotyped immigration novels. The focus of this study is to analyze the changes in the life of the protagonist who undergoes a transformation in Germany. In the light of the relationship between social drama and rituals proposed by Victor Turner, the social drama of Turkey in the first novel, Caravanserai, and the transformation of the protagonist in the second novel, The Golden Horn, will be comparatively examined. Changes and novelties in the transformation of the protagonist after her immigration to Germany will be analyzed as an outcome of the social contradictions and norm conflicts between the sending and receiving societies.

Across the world, the housing crisis is escalating. Mass migration to cities has led to rapid urbanisation on an unprecedented scale, while the withdrawal of public funding from social housing provision in Western countries, and widening income inequality, have further compounded the situation. In prosperous US and European cities, middle- and low-income residents are being pushed out of housing markets increasingly dominated by luxury investors. The average London tenant, for example, now pays an unaffordable 49 per cent of his or her pre-tax income in rent. Parts of the developing world and areas of forced migration are experiencing insufficient affordable housing stock coupled with rapidly shifting ways of life. In response to this context, forward-thinking architects are taking the lead with a collaborative approach. By partnering with allied fields, working with residents, developing new forms of housing, and leveraging new funding systems and policies, they are providing strategic leadership for what many consider to be our cities’ most pressing crisis. Amidst growing economic and health disparities, this issue of AD asks how housing projects, and the design processes behind them, might be interventions towards greater social equity, and how collaborative work in housing might reposition the architectural profession at large. Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, grade: 3.78, Northwest University, course: transitional housing, young adults, homelessness, mixed income housing, psychological sense of community, language: English, abstract: Homeless young adults represent a failure of the U.S. social services system to prevent new generations of homeless people. However, several organizations are working in concert with communities and governments to combat this problem through transitional housing programs that target young adults ages 18 to 24. Many of these programs mirror the new urban development trend of mixed-income housing, and place transitional houses inside stable neighborhoods that are either affluent or mixed-income themselves. While these programs represent monumental commitments in terms of resources, they also represent hope for many young adults. The sense of community these young-adult residents feel toward their neighborhoods and programs have lasting effects on the residents' abilities to find normalcy inside the American culture through access to education, safety, and employment. This study examines the YMCA Young Adult Services Program for transitional housing, exploring how the program works and what is residents' psychological sense of community.

The reason for research is that the global financial crisis emphasized the risks associated with real-estate booms. In any great financial crisis, the mortgage boom was buoyed by the housing rise and economic activity. When that spiral inverts, falling house prices make tightened lending standards, which bring to widespread failures and debt overhang. The consequences are recessions and high surges in public debt. The thesis is composed of four chapters, each of them dealing with different perspectives of housing boomlet and macro-financial factors. The purpose of this thesis is to define whether there are also housing bubbles within the German mortgage market, as well as to find out which factors prevent Germany from a housing bubble. In order to do so, secondary data from prestigious financial institutes will be analyzed. The result is that there is no housing bubble in Germany at the national level, but that there has been a housing bubble in several cities. After observing the socio-economic changes occured during the period, and searching the reflections of the transformation in the attitudes of social classes and moral perspectives of the protagonists of the two novels, the thesis arrives at the conclusion that the breakdown of the old system and old values were inevitable both because their day was over and because the ambitions of the parvenus were far more ber than theirs.
