Health services provision remain an essential part of the responsibilities of governments throughout the world in view of the vital role good health plays in economic development. However, in the developing world, the public sector (government) is no longer able to solely provide sustainable basic infrastructure, including health services in response to the rapidly growing demand due to increasing population growth and weak economies. This book used the Upper East Region of Ghana as a case study to examine the contribution of the Catholic Church (a not-for-profit health care provider) to improving access to health care delivery in rural communities. The research used secondary and primary data sources which produced results indicating the immense health care delivery gap being filled by the Catholic Church in rural Ghana. It outlined several dimensions of health care access and identified public-private partnerships as a viable policy for governments to adopt for improved access to health care. This book is useful to government and nongovernmental actors in rural health delivery, persons in academia or anyone with an interest in Church-State partnerships in rural health delivery.

In The Patient Revolution, author Krisa Tailor—a noted expert in health care innovation and management—explores, through the lens of design thinking, how information technology will take health care into the experience economy. In the experience economy, patients will shift to being empowered consumers who are active participants in their own care. Tailor explores this shift by creating a vision for a newly designed health care system that's focused on both sickness and wellness, and is driven by data and analytics. The new system seamlessly integrates health into our daily lives, and delivers care so uniquely personalized that no two people are provided identical treatments. Connected through data, everyone across the health care ecosystem, including clinicians, insurers, and researchers, will be able to meet individuals wherever they are in their health journey to reach the ultimate goal of keeping people healthy. The patient revolution has just begun and an exciting journey awaits us. Praise for the patient revolution «A full 50% of the US population has at least one chronic disease that requires ongoing monitoring and treatment. Our current health care system is woefully inadequate in providing these individuals with the treatment and support they need. This disparity can only be addressed through empowering patients to better care for themselves and giving providers better tools to care for their patients. Both of those solutions will require the development and application of novel technologies. In Krisa Tailor's book The Patient Revolution, a blueprint is articulated for how this could be achieved, culminating in a vision for a learning health system within 10 years.» —Ricky Bloomfield, MD, Director, Mobile Technology Strategy; Assistant Professor, Duke Medicine «In The Patient Revolution, Krisa Tailor astutely points out that 80% of health is impacted by factors outside of the health care system. Amazon unfortunately knows more about our patients than we do. The prescriptive analytics she describes will allow health care providers to use big data to optimize interventions at the level of the individual patient. The use of analytics will allow providers to improve quality, shape care coordination, and contain costs. Advanced analytics will lead to personalized care and ultimately empowered patients!» —Linda Butler, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer/Chief Medical Information Officer, Rex Healthcare «The Patient Revolution provides a practical roadmap on how the industry can capture value by making health and care more personalized, anticipatory, and intuitive to patient needs.» —Ash Damle, CEO, Lumiata «Excellent read. For me, health care represents a unique economy—one focused on technology, but requiring a deep understanding of humanity. Ms. Tailor begins the exploration of how we provide care via the concepts of design thinking, asking how we might redesign care with an eye toward changing the experience. She does an excellent job deconstructing this from the patient experience. I look forward to a hopeful follow-up directed at changing the provider culture.» —Alan Pitt, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Avizia «Whether you're a health care provider looking to gain an understanding of the health care landscape, a health data scientist, or a seasoned business pro, you'll come away with a deeper, nuanced understanding of today's evolving health care system with this book. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Health Science, grade: A, Andrey Jackson University (American College for Prehospital Medicine), course: Emergency Medical Services, language: English, abstract: Dispatcher training can improve ambulance response times in emergency medical service (EMS) systems in low income countries. Emergency health care systems are of increasing concern in international healthcare developments and the global fight against the burdens of disease. Studies show that emergency health care improvements in developing countries should focus on ambulance response. Low-cost changes including emergency medical dispatch training in developing urban emergency health care systems can improve ambulance response times. Concerns about focusing on ambulance response time as a single indicator are addressed by showing a case sensitive approach for developing emergency health care systems that in return can identify ambulance response as main indicator for a particular system. This approach has been chosen for the subject of study, the Osh Ambulance Service, a municipal EMS in Kyrgyzstan. This particular service, the implemented research, the study design and, the data analysis are presented. The data show that there has been a change from an average response time of 23, 18 minutes to 20, 15 minutes. This data is statistically significant and indicates that the implemented changes, despite severe challenges, likely have an effect, but it is unclear if this c...

Modern health care increasingly faces ethical problems in relation to new technologies, costs and rationing and changing social values. An ageing population and an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases have led to difficult choices in allocation of limited resources. There is greater public awareness of ethical issues through media reporting and a greater demand for public accountability of health care professionals. Health care professionals need not only strive to give the best possible clinical care, but also have to consider the ethical dimensions of the care they provide. To ensure high ethical standards in patient care, individual health care professionals and health care institutions need support and advice. The author argues that clinical ethics committees serve that purpose.

There are wide inconsistencies between, and even within, countries in how community-orientated care is defined and interpreted. The analysis presented in this book take as a starting point an evidence-based balanced care model in which services are provided in community settings close to the populations served, with hospital stays being reduced as far as possible, usually located in acute wards in general hospitals. The surprising conclusion from the research is that the same problems arise in all countries, regardless of resource status, and thus the recommendations of this book apply to mental health provision everywhere. This book reviews the implementation of community-orientated care using the balanced care model. It summarizes the steps, obstacles and mistakes that have been encountered in the implementation of community mental health care worldwide and presents guidelines on how to avoid them. It proposes realistic and achievable recommendations for the development and implementation of community-orientated mental health care over the next ten years. These guidelines will be of practical use to psychiatrists and other mental health and public health practitioners at all levels worldwide, including policy makers, commissioners, funders, non-governmental organisations, service users and carers. A core message of the book is that the mental health sector will more powerfully advocate for better services in future through strong and unified alliances, especially with powerful representation from consumer/service user and carer groups. Community-orientated care draws on a wide range of practitioners, providers, care and support systems (both professional and non-professional), though particular components may play a larger or lesser role in different settings depending on the local context and the available resources, especially trained staff. Research by a WPA task force has demonstrated that most of the challenges are common and global, but with local variations. The book is therefore relevant to psychiatrists and mental health workers in developed countries who are trying to deliver better health care on reduced budgets and for those in the developing economies who are in the position to modernise their mental health care. It provides clear, concise guidance on policy and practice decisions, learning from what has and has not worked in regions in the world. The book contains many tables documenting the evidence, supported by an essential reference list, and a Key Points summary for each chapter. Highly Commended in the Psychiatry section of the 2012 BMA Book Awards.

Health care professionals are most negligent as far as their own health is concerned. It is time now for providers of 'Health care service' to look at their own health. High physical endurance and higher rates of exposure to infections and work related stress like situation calls for a serious move to have some standards for the healthcare worker to minimize exposure and ensure follow up. Krisa Tailor ties together—in a comprehensive, unique way—the worlds of health care administration, clinical practice, design thinking, and business strategy and innovation.» —Steven Chan, MD, MBA, University of California, Davis
