In the European Union nations, and other countries including Japan, Australia and Malaysia, it is a legal requirement that food products containing genetically modified organism (GMO) materials are labelled as such in order that customers may make informed purchasing decisions. For manufacturers and consumers to be confident about these assertions, systems must be in place along the entire food chain which support the co-existence of GM and non GM materials whilst maintaining a strict segregation between the two. This book is an output of a European Union-funded project entitled «Co-Extra: GM and non-GM food and feed supply chains: their Co-Existence and Traceability». The objective of this four year project is to provide practical tools and methods for implementing co-existence that will: enable the co-existence of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops enable the segregation and tracing of genetically modified organism (GMO) materials and derived products along the food and feed chains anticipate the future expansion of the use of GMOs The project is designed to foster a robustly science-based debate amongst all of the stakeholders involved in the food and feed chains, and the tools will be assessed not only from a technical point of view but with regard to the economic and legal aspects. It also surveys the GMO-related legal regimes and practices that exist in and beyond the EU. This book examines the practical tools and methods available to implement the co-existence and traceability of GM and non-GM food materials along the entire food and feed chains, as demanded by consumers and by legislation in force in the EU and elsewhere. GM and Non-GM Supply Foods is a source of valuable information for food manufacturers, food research institutions and regulatory bodies internationally.

Kumar Narendra Production and Potentiality of Oil Seeds in Andhra Pradesh

Oilseeds have been known for centuries, their importance as a major source of both fats and proteins has been realized only during 19th century especially after the end of the World War II. No other farm commodity can really meet simultaneously in so large a measure the energy and protein requirements of human body as oil seeds do. Since oil seeds supply the major energy protein needs of the livestock population as well, they are the primary source of even such valuable animal fats and proteins as milk, meat and eggs. Apart from their use in human foods and animal feeds, oil seeds also have a wide variety of industrial applications. The use of vegetable oils in soaps, paints and varnishes and even in lubricating oils has been known for quite sometime. In recent years oil seeds are finding their way in such diverse industrial uses as fatty acids, glycerin, tannin and even chemicals, to mention a few. The industrial uses of oil seeds are actually increasing with new technological break-through. As a result, the developed and developing economies like India are trying to increase the production and productivity of oil seeds.

Marie Kreipe Genetically Modified Food. Trade Regulation in view of Environmental Policy Objectives

The controversial issue of genetically modified (GM) food is discussed in this book. While the United States (US) is a strong supporter of GM technology having adopted a rather lax regulation of trade with GM products, the European Union (EU) is representing a sceptical position towards this new technology and has even imposed a de facto moratorium on further approval of GM products from 1998 to 2004. The purpose of this book is an extensive analysis of the current status on risks and benefits of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and a suggestion on how an appropriate regulation of GM products could be derived. Potential guidelines are provided for policy formulation both in a qualitative and in a quantitative dimension. The US is applying the principle of substantial equivalence, which means that GM products are in their substance identical to products produced by conventional methods. Therefore, no new regulations are necessary for the trade with GM products. In contrast, the European Union (EU) disagrees that GM products are equivalent to their conventional counterparts due to the different production process. Instead, the EU refers to the precautionary principle in its GMO policy, meaning that trade with GM products should be restricted until it will be proven that no additional risks are implied by the use of these products. The divergence of opinions about the right policy to regulate GM products has significant impacts on trade flows and welfare effects. The US and...

Deepthi Kolady Public-Private Partnership and Genetically Engineered Eggplant

The public-private partnership involved in the development of genetically engineered eggplant (Bt eggplant) in India is a good example for analyzing the economic impact of the partnership for different stake holders: producers, consumers, and innovators, and this book share that motivation. This book focuses on factors influencing expected adoption of two different forms of the technology- Bt hybrid and Bt open pollinated varieties (OPV), the welfare benefits of introducing Bt eggplant in the context of the public-private partnership, and the impact of introduction of Bt eggplant on varietal diversity. The main findings are: hybrid growers of eggplant have higher probability to adopt Bt hybrid; providing Bt OPVs on preferential terms to resource- limited farmers would not be detrimental to the innovator's interest, and introduction of Bt OPVs by public sector might reduce the speed at which landraces are getting replaced by Bt hybrids in India, which is one of the centers of origin of eggplant. However, the success of the partnership would largely depend on the seed premium of Bt hybrid charged by the innovator, and the performance of Bt technology.

Crop protection continues to be an important component of modern farming to maintain food production to feed an expanding human population, but considerable changes have occurred in the regulation of pesticides in Europe in the last decade. The aim has been to reduce their impact on people and the environment. This has resulted in a major reduction in the number of chemicals approved for application on crops. In other parts of the world, a continuing expansion in the growing of genetically modified crops has also changed the pattern of pesticide use. In this second edition, Graham Matthews, updates how pesticides are registered and applied and the techniques used to mitigate their effects in the environment. Information on operator safety, protection of workers in crops treated with pesticides and spray drift affecting those who live in farming areas is also discussed. By bringing together the most recent research on pesticides in a single volume, this book provides a vital up to date resource for agricultural scientists, agronomists, plant scientists, plant pathologists, entomologists, environmental scientists, public health personnel, toxicologists and others working in the agrochemical industry and governments. It should assist development of improvements in harmonising regulation of pesticides in countries with limited resources for registration of pesticides.

Bimal Jalan Emerging India

"As India marks the twenty-year milestone of economic liberalization, some concerns about the country's future prospects as an emerging power are beginning to be voiced; often, these stem from the past history of sharp swings in India's fortunes. Bimal Jalan, one of the country's well-known economists and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has closely followed the path of India's economic policies across its changing trajectories, from before the time the economy was liberalized to the very present The pieces that appear here were all written during the last twenty years, with the exception of three prescient notes from the mid-1970s highlighting the need for economic reforms to foster growth. The principal thought behind these essays is that, in the past twenty years, India's capacity to grow faster than ever before has increased substantially because of its comparative advantage in relation to other countries. However, Jalan points out that for India to seize the opportunities that lie ahead, it is essential to bring about further reforms in the running of India's politics and administration in order to ensure inclusive and incremental economic growth. Healthy seeds and propagules are the basic requirement for producing good grains, fruits and vegetables needed for human survival and perpetuation. Dispersal of microbial plant pathogens via seeds and propagules has assumed more importance than other modes of dispersal, as infected seeds and propagules have the potential to become the primary sources of carrying pathogen inoculum for subsequent crops. Several diseases transmitted through seeds and propagules have been shown to have the potential to damage economies as a result of huge quantitative and qualitative losses in numerous crops. Hence, it is essential to rapidly detect, identify and differentiate the microbial plant pathogens present in seeds and propagules precisely and reliably, using sensitive techniques. Microbial Plant Pathogens: Detection and Management in Seeds and Propagules provides a comprehensive resource on seed-borne and propagule-borne pathogens. Information on the biology of microbial pathogens, including genetic diversity, infection process and survival mechanisms of pathogens and epidemiology of diseases caused by them, are discussed critically and in detail to highlight weak links in the life cycles of the pathogens. Development of effective disease management systems, based on the principles of exclusion and eradication of pathogens and immunization of crop plants to enhance the levels of resistance of cultivars to diseases, has been effective to keep the pathogens at bay. The need for production of disease-free seeds/propagules has been emphasized to prevent the carryover of the inoculum to the next crop or introduction of the pathogens to other locations. Effectiveness of adopting simple cultural practices and development of cultivars resistant to diseases through traditional breeding methods or biotechnological approach have resulted in reducing the pathogen inoculum and disease incidence. Although application of different chemicals may reduce the disease incidence effectively, biological management of crop diseases, employing potential biological control agents have to be preferred to preserve the agroecosystems. Greater efforts have to be made to integrate compatible strategies to enhance the effectiveness of diseases management systems. Protocols appended at the end of relevant chapters form a unique feature of this book to enable the researchers to fine-tune their projects. This 2 volume set provides comprehensive and updated information about the economically-important groups of microbial plant pathogens carried by seed and propagules. Graduate students, researchers and teachers of plant pathology, plant protection, microbiology, plant breeding and genetics, agriculture and horticulture, as well as certification and quarantine personnel will find the information presented in this book useful.

TOM KINARA Valuation of Genetically Determined Cattle Attributes in Kenya

Pastoralist in developing countries keep livestock with unique genetically determined traits. In marginal environments, local livestock breeds are crucial for sustaining rural livelihoods by producing a wide range of products while requiring relatively low levels of input with regard to fodder, management and health care. Cattle stand out across in terms of provision of non- market services, including draught power, manure, risk management, asset storage, community bonding, and ceremonial services, amongst others. Therefore the maintenance of the adapted cattle breeds is ecologically more sustainable and will ensure sustainable food and livelihood provision for communities. However, economic forces of globalization as well as political backing for crossbreeding with exotic breed, among other factors have already resulted in the extinction of a large number of breeds and many more are threatened.

Sahidul Ahmed Quality of Secondary Education. A Case Study of Tripura

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

India, in particular, appears to have been the chief beneficiary for qualified services. According to the A.T. Kearney Global Services Location Index, 2011, India ranks highest as offshoring destination. Given the immense poverty of a large percentage of the population, it seems worthwhile to inves-tigate how India managed to become a solicited provider for high-tech services. However, there are alternatives for investment. Other Asian nations court investors with lower prices and an improving quality. Among them is China that attempts to supersede India as most popular service offshoring destination. Where will be the back-office of the future?

Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: none, NIL, course: Business management, 46 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: India's growth story as a medical tourism hub is a relatively newer one. With significant cost advantages, availability of quality medical treatment with the most-advanced medical technology coupled with India's well-known tourist destinations and rich cultural heritage, medical tourism does provide a motive sufficient enough to allure those foreign patients who either want to avoid the long waiting list for medical treatment in the West or, in absence of any health insurance coverage, seek lower cost treatment. India's strength in advanced and life saving healthcare such as organ transplants, cardio-vascular surgery, etc, as well as in alternative systems of medicine(i.e. ayurveda, naturopathy, etc) offer significant competitive advantages. Cashing in this opportunity, The National Health Policy 2002 declared that treatment of foreign patients is legally an "export" and deemed "eligible for all fiscal incentives extended to export earnings". Besides, a new category of visa, "Medical Visa" has been introduced by Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. Swaminathan Balasubramaniam, V. D. Tarpara, M. G. Dhandhalya Export Performance of Marine Products from India

Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, , language: English, abstract: Marine products industry alone has a share of at least 6 per cent in world exports in which India is the fourth largest exporting country after China, Peru and Japan. In fact, out of 7.85 million tonnes (mt) of overall fish production of India, roughly 43 per cent is contributed by the marine sector though it turns out to be less than half to that of India's major competitors in fish trade. Marine products exports play a pivotal role in Indian economy in terms of employment and income generation besides valuable foreign exchange earnings. They have created a huge demand in international trade and are acclaimed to be one of the fastest moving commodities in the world food market.China, Thailand, Vietnam, Chile, Taiwan, Indonesia, India, Peru and South Korea are the main sea-food exporters comprising more than 60 per cent of trade value of marine products. In general, 38 per cent (live weight equivalent) of total fisheries product is traded internationally. But with only 20 per cent of its total fish production entering world trade, Indian seafood exports are far below than the global average.Fortunately, India's vast coastline of 8,129 km stretching almost two-thirds of the country and encompassing an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of more than 2.2 million sq. km. offers sufficient surplus of fish and fishery products, which is currently under-...

Peter S. Lumsden Lumsden of the Guides. The Life and Campaigns of the Founder of the Corps of Guides-An Elite Regiment of the Indian Army

The life of the founder of the famous frontier forceBritish India gave rise to a number of notable regiments and among them were few which could compare with the individualism, élan, fame and prowess of the Corps of Guides. This magnificent unit was formed in 1847 to comprise both cavalry and infantry and its purpose was to provide reliable men to act as guides to forces active in the field and to act as intelligence gatherers on the troubled borderlands of the North West Frontier. Its men were drawn from the fierce tribal men of the high country of the north of the Sub-Continent and their martial traditions ensured they were troops of the highest calibre. The man called upon to raise and command this exemplary unit was Harry Burnett Lumsden. Born aboard ship in the Bay of Bengal in 1821, the son of a serving officer in India, Lumsden had India in his blood from the outset. He joined the 59th Bengal Native Infantry in 1838 and was engaged in the disastrous First Afghan War at the forcing of the Khyber Pass. British India could only be consolidated as a whole by the subjugation of its most significant military power, the Sikhs of the Punjab and Lumsden fought in both Sikh Wars-being wounded at Sobraon in the first of them in February 1846. It was, however, for his creation of the Guides that he earned his fame as one of the notable figures of British India. This is the story of Lumsden's life and campaigns and it is an invaluable addition to any library of the Raj period.L...

Ashok Taradale Economic Development and Labour Transition in India

Document from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: Currently in India we are observing that the number of labours are shifting from agriculture sector to other sectors of economy. The labour transition occurs due to several reasons one of the main reason is that the fixed wage rate in other sectors as compared to agriculture sector. In this context the Lewis model provides a good framework for explaining the ways in which the fruits of economic development are spread. Lewis divided developing economy into two sectors: subsistence and capital sector. He assumed that the subsistence sector was characterised by surplus labour and low real wages whereas capital sector characterised by capital intensive production and higher real wages. If we transfer excess labour from agriculture to capital sector it will not affect the production and productivity of subsistence sector and it will increase the production in capital sector which will help in development of economy. Lewis' model is mainly applicable surplus labour countries. If we take the example of China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam which have evidenced the Lewis model we can compare the India with those countries .China, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam were gone through enormous labour transition which helped in the development of economy of the respective countries. Migration of workforce in India characterised by a shift of predominant share of agriculture to ma...

Supply Chain for perishable products, specifically vegetables like potato in India, are quite fragmented and run through a number of mediators. These layers of intermediaries contributed significantly towards the cost rather than value of the product as such. The author, in the present work, attempted to assess barriers and challenges in the current system and terminate with the recommendation towards weeding out inefficiencies in the organization. Secondly, Grape cultivation is one of the most remunerative farming enterprises in India. The earning potential in grape cultivation is also high in India. But grape growers face a great bit of problems in grape farming and its selling. This work was directed to evaluate the ultimately trends in grape farming at national level; to study the marketing practices for grapes; to analyze the problems and challenges at various levels of grape marketing in India.

The incorporation of functional ingredients in a given food system and the processing and handling of such foods are associated with nutritional challenges for their healthy delivery. The extreme sensitivity of some components cause significant loss of product quality, stability, nutritional value and bioavailability, and the overall acceptability of the food product. Consequently, encapsulation has been successfully used to improve stability and bioavailability of functional ingredients. Encapsulation is one example of technology that has the potential to meet the challenge of successfully incorporating and delivering functional ingredients into a range of food types. The book will cover topics about 1) Characterization of novel polymers and their use in encapsulation processes. 2) Stability of nutraceutical compounds encapsulated with novel polymers. 3) Application of encapsulated compounds with novel polymers in functional food systems. This book provides a detailed overview of technologies for preparing and characterisation of encapsulates for food active ingredients using modified polymers. The use of modified polymers as coating materials it is a field that still needs study. The book is aimed to inform students and researchers in the areas of food science and food technology, and professionals in the food industry.

Take a literary tour through India's rich folk tale tradition in this comprehensive volume by historian and folklorist Joseph Jacobs. These Indian tales resemble the stories that flourished in Europe, such as the tales by the Brothers Grimm and by Aesop, although they have an Indian flavor. The collector of these stories contends that they are very old, older than the legends and folk-tales that later flourished in Europe. He believes that India was the originator of this genre and the stories were possibly brought to Europe by the crusaders or other travelers that passed through India. In this book feature 30 stories taken from popular South Asian oral history.

Heinz Mode The Woman in Indian Art

Indian art is in many ways a discovery of the twentieth century. This is not to say that it was unknown earlier or quite disregarded. But it awakened interest only as an ethnological phenomenon, as one of the national peculiarities of India, and was thought of importance primarily as a curiosity, or even as a monstrosity. An interesting instance of this is the attitude of Goethe, who frequently mentioned in his poems that he regretted he was unable to love India as he might otherwise have done, because of his dislike of Indian sculpture.
