Rice is the most important food crop in developing countries. In fact, it is the basic food for nearly half of the world’s population. To meet the food need of ever-growing world population, total rice production will have to be increased by 50% by 2025. Indica rice which accounts for 80% of the total rice production, has proven recalcitrant to in vitro culture and plant regeneration. Although recovery of transgenic rice plants and their offspring has been reported in a few indica rice varieties but gene transfer to most of high-yielding indica rice varieties is not yet routine and recovery of fertile transgenic plants has been rather inefficient. A number of factors such as genotype, media components including growth regulators, gelling agent, carbon source and amino acids, nature of explant and physical environment have been shown to be critical for plant regeneration in rice. The present study is aimed at estimating the genotypic variability for plant regeneration in indica rice varieties and to identify commercially important indica rice varieties, for maximum callus induction and plant regeneration for routine use in developing rice transgenesis and in related work.

Molecular markers especially, microsatellite or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) was the marker aided selection (MAS) technique utilized to determine salinity tolerance in rice. It accelerates rice breeding process by significantly improving selection efficiency. Fourty varieties were used to study the effect of salt stress on seedling growth and efficiency of SSR markers for the screening of salt tolerant varieties. Phenotyping of the varieties at the seedling stage was done using salinized (EC=12ds/m) culture solution under controlled conditions at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) glasshouse. Salt tolerant varieties showed stunted growth with the reduction of leaf area over the varieties of non-saline conditions. The seedlings grown from the normal seeds were vigorous than the seedlings from the seeds of saline conditions. This result indicated the impediment of seed vigor due to salt stress.

Efficient tissue culture and transformation techniques are important in uncovering such genes from traditional rice varieties. Aim of this study was to optimize an efficient protocol of callus induction and transformation of Sri Lankan traditional rice varieties. Dahanala, Kaluheenaty, Kalubalawee, madael, Kahatawalu, Kaharamana, Gonabaru, Alwee, Wannidahanala, Kottiyaran, BG380 and H4 were selected for the study. Twelve different concentration combinations of 2, 4-D and kinetin were used to determine the effect of hormone concentrations on callus induction. Calli were transformed using Agrobacterium mediated transformation. For calli transformation Agrobacterium tumefaciens GV3101 containing pBI121 vector was used. Transformed callus were detected using GUS analysis. Efficiency of transient transformation was calculated for each variety. There was a significant difference of 12 treatments of callus induction of tested varieties except Gonabaru. Kaluheenaty, Madael, Gonabaru, Kottiyaran and H4 have shown the best callus induction for the same hormone concentration combination of 2.5mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L kinetin. Tamil Nadu is India's fifth largest producer of rice, next to West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Cauvery delta region of the composite Thanjavur district in the state is known as the Rice Bowl of South India. Rice is grown in 2.1 million hectares accounting for about one-third of the gross cropped area under diverse environments in the state, like; rain-fed tank, tank, tank cum well, canal (river) and canal (reservoir) irrigation systems. The rice productivity growth had been declining at the rate of -0.40 per cent (during period 1990-91 to 1999-00) as the yields of existing varieties had already been plateauing. Recent breakthroughs in the development of tropical hybrid rice technology had how ever provided an alternative option for raising yield levels for sustained production growth in rice especially in favourable irrigated eco-systems. A nation-wide network on Development and Use of Hybrid Rice Technology - initiated by the ICAR with support from the UNDP,FAO and IRRI. Soil health has become a cause of concern for sustainable agricultural production in the new millennium. Use of high analysis fertilizers, heavy sulphur removal by the crops under intensive cultivation & neglect of S replenishment contributed to widespread S deficiencies. Sulphur deficiencies have been reported from 72 countries in the world. Sulphur has a great role in N-fixation by influencing active nodulation in legume & despite the relatively low S requirement of rice , the productivity of these staple food grains may drastically be reduced by an inadequate supply of S. Sulphur has the ability to benefit more than one crop in sequence due to it's significant residual response. Application of higher dose of phosphorus (60 kg P205 /ha ) and increasing levels of sulphur up to 40 kg S/ha proved to be the best in improving the growth, yield attributing characters, grain yield of green gram. Varying levels of residual fertility and basal dose of nitrogen application significantly improved the rice yield and yield attributes. The research data of this book makes it useful reference for researchers, under graduate and post graduate students of agriculture and farming community.

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world and in Egypt. Therefore, the present work was designed to investigate the response of corn to nitrogen and manganese fertilization. Two field experiments were conducted during two successive growing seasons of 1997 and 1998. The effect of four nitrogen levels, three manganese nutrient rates and three methods of Mn applications on the growth, grain yield and its components as well as grain quality of maize were investigated. The soil of the experimental plots was clay texture (pH value 7.91, CaCO3 3.89 % and organic matter 1.98 %, 17.3 mg/kg available N and 8.5 mg/kg available Mn). A spilt-plot in a randomized complete block design with four replications was used; the main plots were devoted for nitrogen levels, the sub-plot for Mn levels and their methods of applications. The results of the experiments could be summarized as follows: The highest grain yield and its quality were generally recorded by foliar application or soaking grains with 70 mg Mn /l plus 150 kg N/fed in Qaliuobia Gavernorate. In all cases, consideration should be given to the actual available contents of the nutrient in the soil itself.

Two Bt hybrids studied (RCH 134 and RCH 317) were physiologically superior to non-Bt hybrid ‘LHH 144’ and the inbuilt bollworm resistance of Bt hybrids was the cause for this superiority. Performance of cotton was markedly improved by N fertilization up to 180 kg N/ha in terms of growth and yield attributes, yield and nutrient uptake. Bt hybrids can prove more productive under low or no N fertilization and thus are suitable for cultivation in soils with low available Nitrogen.

The study includes screening by morphological characters and subsequently validation using SSR (Simple Sequence Repaet) markers. Most importantly this research will indirectly ensure food security.

The book investigates the way learners of the English language view native and non-native varieties of English with regards to the varieties they intend to acquire. The analysis is based on empirical data gathered in a small-scale empirical study with the participation of Hungarian learners of English of different ages, levels of English and educational background. The results reveal that native speaker varieties of English are favoured over non-native varieties by learners when they choose a target variety of the language. Moreover, several factors influence this choice of target variety, including knowledge of the varieties of English, personal influence, the situations in which learners of English use the language outside the classroom, learners' aims concerning the use of English in their future, native and non-native interlocutors learners use the language with and certain language-related attitudes. The participants were also found to reject the norms of non-native varieties of English and English as a Lingua Franca as possible alternatives to the standards of the native varieties.

It is, therefore, important to explore alternative sources of nitrogen to partially meet the nitrogen requirement. Biological nitrogen fixation offers this alternative, and also offers an economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducing external inputs and improving internal resources. Establishment of new artificial associations, as mentioned before, the nitrogen fixing capacity of symbiotic systems is very significant, but the host and organism specificity of different plant-bacterium association for atmospheric nitrogen fixation is much wider. This feature of the association systems turned attention to creating new artificial system between diazotrophic bacteria and different higher plants. In this context, the aim of the present book was to evaluate whether nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria, specially Nostoc as biofertilizers.

The objective of this study was to establish a relationship between; Aflatoxins B1 induced Pathological changes with feed Aflatoxins level and Tissue/Organ Aflatoxins levels. The study was completed in two phases. In Phase one a toxic fungus was cultured in the laboratory and Aflatoxins were produced on rice. Aflatoxins contents of rice were analyzed and quantified. In phase two quantified Aflatoxins were mixed in experimental feed and two type of aflatoxicosis, acute and chronic were induced in broiler chicks. In acute aflatoxicosis, three trials were conducted at the age of 7, 21, 35 days by high doses of AFB1 (1600, 3200, 6400 µg/kg) in feed for one week. In chronic aflatoxicosis low doses (50, 100, 200, 400, 800 µg /kg) AFB1 were given for four weeks. Different parameter like, grass, clinical pathology, histopathology, tissue aflatoxins levels were studied in detail.

This book discusses about the utilization of Fermented Rice Waste (FRW) in Japanese quail ration. Commercial Japanese quail farming is one of the emerging enterprises in India. The demand for both egg and meat of quail has gone up in recent years, but the production levels have neither been sufficient nor consistent. Quail meat is delicious and also has some medicinal value for some nervous disorders. The cholesterol content of meat is low. Balanced feeding of quail is important for better production. The cost of feed accounts for 70-75 percent of the total cost of quail farming. Most of the feed supplements in quail ration are conventional feed grains which are costly and prime human food item. Therefore, its substitution with unconventional feed source will spare them for human consumption as well as reduce the cost. Fermented rice waste is an unconventional feed source available in sufficient amount in Jharkhand. It is a waste product obtained during the preparation of liquor made by fermenting the rice. Fermented rice waste (FRW) contains 22 per cent crude protein and 4-5 per cent crude fibre. The estimated energy content of FRW is about 2.15 Mcal\Kg.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) is one of the major staple root crops in different countries of the world.However, the yield potential is seldom realized, and among the yield limiting factors, soil fertility is one of the major factor affecting the yield of the crop. Thus, this book gives research result on 'Response Taro to Applied N and K Fertilizer Levels. Two types of fertilizers at different levels, i.e. K (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1) and N (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), were combined in factorial for the experimental study. The response of taro to N and K levels was assessed by examining growth and yield parameters. The result revealed that K had no significant effect on the growth and yield of taro, except for the corm dry weight. But N had significantly affected both the growth and yield of taro. The maximum yield (60.96 t ha-1) was obtained by application of 150 kg N ha-1. Economic analysis showed that the highest net benefit was obtained in treatment combination of 75 kg K ha-1 with 150 kg N ha-1. However, the marginal rate of return analysis was optimum when 100 kg N ha-1 was applied. Thus, 100 kg N ha-1 was found optimum for taro production based on this experiment.

The general objective of this study is to examine the efficiency, and the factors that influence the efficiency of irrigated rice farmers in Mali. A special focus is devoted to the quantifying effects of irrigation scheme rehabilitation. A stochastic parametric frontier analysis is employed using a cross-sectional data set consisting 147 households that are cultivating 398 rice plots. It is found that for rehabilitated areas there is more room to increase rice production by making a better use of the existing technology. For these villages policies should be directed to increase the productivity of manual-labor through extension education or labor-saving technologies. On the other hand, farmers in non-re­habilitated villages are relatively more efficient indicating that there is more need for technology improvements, such as improvements in irrigation infrastructure that can enhance productive use of seed and nitrogen. A clear message of the study is that the extension services should be directed separately to heterogeneous areas. It is necessary to identify the structural differences in production environments between the areas that are located in the same region.

In the absence of accurate and rapid N testing methods, many growers currently apply N fertilizer in excess rather than risk of yield reduction through N deficiency. Crop growth and crop need for supplemental N can be strongly influenced by crop-growing conditions, crop and soil management, and climate, which can vary greatly among fields, villages, seasons and years. The current recommendation of fixed-time split N application at specified growth stages is not adequate to synchronize N supply with actual crop N demand because of poorly designed N splitting and variations in crop N demand and indigenous soil N supply. One of the emerging technologies is the determination of the plant for N status in combination with soil testing. The premise is that the plant may be a better indicator of actual N status than inference from soil test. Therefore, the predictive recommendations need to be adapted to the crop N status. Leaf colour chart (LCC) is the promising tool developed by IRRI in recent years for need-based N management in rice crop. The present study deals with validation of LCC for real time N fertilization in wheat.

Growth can be viewed as a result of a series of processes operating at different levels of organization: changes at the whole animal level, in the relative size of organs, the generation and growth of muscle fibers, and the physiological process of synthesizing protein. The aim of this study was to understand the process of growth at different levels, whole animal and cellular, to recognize how ration level influenced the growth dynamics of the cephalopod Euprymna tasmanica. Somatic growth of the squid, E. tasmanica (Pfeffer, 1884), when exposed to two set rations of mysid shrimp (high, 10% body weight per day and low, 3% body weight per day), was examined at the whole-body and cellular level using various methods. Whole-body growth was assessed using weight and dorsal mantle length (DML) relationships, gonad to somatic indices (GSI) and nitrogen budgets created from measurements of protein nitrogen flux. Cellular growth was described using growth correlates (RNA and protein ratios) and histological analyses of mantle muscle block widths and frequency distributions of fiber sizes and densities.

Nitrogen is arguably the most important nutrient required by plants. However, the availability of nitrogen is limited in many soils and although the earth's atmosphere consists of 78.1% nitrogen gas (N2) plants are unable to use this form of nitrogen. To compensate , modern agriculture has been highly reliant on industrial nitrogen fertilizers to achieve maximum crop productivity. However, a great deal of fossil fuel is required for the production and delivery of nitrogen fertilizer. Moreover carbon dioxide (CO2) which is released during fossil fuel combustion contributes to the greenhouse effect and run off of nitrate leads to eutrophication of the waterways. Biological nitrogen fixation is an alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. It is carried out by prokaryotes using an enzyme complex called nitrogenase and results in atmospheric N2 being reduced into a form of nitrogen diazotrophic organisms and plants are able to use (ammonia). It is this process and its major players which will be discussed in this book.
