Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, , language: English, abstract: This paper, sponsored by the German Development Service (DED) under the canopy, Programme for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (PSMNR) in the South-West of Cameroon, gives an overview of the state of village development in Bakingili, Cameroon and further expatiates on the desired goals and objectives of the villagers. Bakingilii shares a closer boundary with the sea and the village has a population of about 693 people. As concerns social infrastructure, there are 79 houses and the main livelihood activity in the village is farming. Due to the small nature of the village, most of the information presented here is first hand. The goal is to provide information that can serve as springboards to young researchers. Base on the information gathered and analysed, it's however deduced that the village lags behind in terms of rural development.

Villages in Indonesia

The wide variety of ethnic groups in Indonesia is reflected in the ethnic diversity among Indonesian villages. Until now, descriptive studies of village life have been virtually nonexistent except in the Dutch language. This collection of comprehensive surveys of thirteen villages in Indonesia provides the first major study of this fundamental level of Indonesian society in the post-colonial period. The studies are based on first-hand field experience by outstanding Indonesian, Dutch, and American scholars. The villages included are representative of the variety of social, political, economic, and religious systems in the major island regions: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Timor, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ambon, and West Irian. Most of the contributors are anthropologists, but a sociologist, an agronomist, and an authority on adat law are also represented. Although the articles reflect the particular interests of the individual authors, certain general anthropological topics - such as demography, settlement patterns, subsistence economy, land tenure, and social and political structures - are covered in each to allow for comparisons among the studies. The editor has added a history of Indonesian village studies, and in a concluding chapter he makes general observations about village life in Indonesia. In addition to illustrating the range of Indonesia's ethnic diversity, these village surveys provide greater understanding of the social phenomena and processes that form a basic ...

Henry A. Fischer Dornberg. in the Shadow of the Josefsberg: The Families of Somogydorocske Somogy County Hungary 1730-1948

In the past, the steep, majestic, heavily forested, and somewhat impregnable Josefsberg was the lair of robber bands and brigands following the expulsion of the Turks from the area and all of Hungary. In the future, it would become known as the Jószefhegy. It is one of the highest elevations in northeastern Somogy County. In its lengthening shadow, the village of Dörnberg would emerge in the early decades of the eighteenth century named as such by its German settlers in reference to the abundance of thorns in its lower regions. These first settlers were in large part of Hessian origin, having joined the Schwabenzug (the Great Swabian migration) of the eighteenth century into Hungary at the invitation of the Habsburg emperor Charles VI. The fact that they were Lutherans would lead to decades in which they were forced to exist as an underground congregation until the Edict of Toleration was promulgated by the emperor Joseph II in 1782, which led to the naming of the local heights as the Josefsberg in his honor. It was sometime later that the county administration renamed the village, and it became Somogydöröcske. The village would maintain its German character throughout its history until the end of the Second World War when Protocol XIII of the Potsdam Declaration was carried out on April 6, 1948, and the vast majority of the village population was expelled along with the German families in its affiliates in Bonnya and Gadács and sent by cattle car to the then Russian zone of ...

Mutale Sani Boniface Management of Village Water Supply Hand Pumps in Zimbabwe

Management of village water supply hand pumps in rural Zimbabwe is a matter that still requires much attention from the authorities, to run smoothly and sustainably. There are obviously still a lot of loopholes in the management of village hand pumps and water supplies are often interrupted due to inefficiencies that are inherent in the management systems of these hand pumps. It is also clear that numerous deficiencies existed at all levels of the management structures of the water supply systems in rural areas. DDF and BRDC had virtually no capacity to effect efficient operation and maintenance of village water supply systems for rural communities. In particular DDF was failing to procure spare parts for maintenance purposes .Critical technical staff as well as logistics in the water division was virtually non-existent. Without exception the RDC also had serious challenges of its own, in ensuring that efficient management structures at all levels were in place and functioning for effective management of hand pumps. Given this scenario, the communities were found not ready to be left on their own to manage their water supply systems in a sustainable manner.

Susana Herrera Mango Elephants in the Sun. How Life in an African Village Let Me Be in My Skin

When the Peace Corps sends Susana Herrera to teach English in Northern Cameroon, she yearns to embrace her adopted village and its people, to drink deep from the spirit of Mother Africa--and to forget a bitter childhood and painful past. To the villagers, however, she's a rich American tourist, a nasara (white person) who has never known pain or want. They stare at her in silence. The children giggle and run away. At first her only confidant is a miraculously communicative lizard. Susana fights back with every ounce of heart and humor she possesses, and slowly begins to make a difference. She ventures out to the village well and learns to carry water on her head. In a classroom crowded to suffocation she finds a way to discipline her students without resorting to the beatings they are used to. She makes ice cream in the scorching heat, and learns how to plant millet and kill chickens. She laughs with the villagers, cries with them, works and prays with them, heals and is helped by them. Village life is hard but magical. Poverty is rampant--yet people sing and share what little they have. The termites that chew up her bed like morning cereal are fried and eaten in their turn ("bite-sized and crunchy like Doritos"). Nobody knows what tomorrow may bring, but even the morning greetings impart a purer sense of being in the moment. Gradually, Susana and the village become part of each other. They will never be the same again.

Morpurgo Michael Homecoming

A tender, lyrical tale from the author's childhood in an idyllic English village, with environmental and conservational themes. In this involving tale, master storyteller and former children's laureate Michael Morpurgo revisits the "landscape of his memories", telling of his boyhood fifty years before. The village of Bradwell is a stone's throw from the sea and is peopled by quirky characters such as the three Stebbing sisters, the white moustachioed Colonel Burton and Bennie the village thug. But the heroine of this story is the serene Mrs Pettigrew, who lives in a railway carriage down in the marshes with her dogs, donkey, bees and hens. Industrial reality intrudes when plans are made to build a nuclear power station on the marshes, and when a village battle ensues for and against this environmental hazard, young Michael finds himself caught up in the sad fate of Mrs Pettigrew and the landscape of his boyhood.
