Tina Peissker The Governance of Climate Change Adaptation in Developing Countries

Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Chair of International Poilitics), language: English, abstract: The prospects that global climate change will have adverse effects on human societies opened up a discourse about how adaptation should be managed. In order to finance adap-tation measures, the parties of the Kyoto Protocol recently established the Adaptation Fund in 2007. In view of the limited resources that are available for adaptation, scales for the prioritization of countries according to their suspected vulnerability have been developed in the literature. Indicators of vulnerability highlighted within this literature, only reflect the indicators of human development and therefore fail to capture the complex structures of vulnerability. The collective learning approach assumes that vulnerability can be significantly decreased when governance systems adapt to external changes through collective learning processes. The present thesis connects to this notion and therefore assesses the influence of collective learning processes on the vulnerability of the Bangladeshi and Pakistani society towards flood hazards. It does so in order to find a determinant of vulnerability that is able to capture its complexity. Following a case study comparison that is based on a systematic research on primary and secondary literature this study reconfirms that vulnerability can substantiall...

Dianah Otieno Determinants of Strategic Choice among Universities in Kenya

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: Universities are considered fundamental segment of the education sector that has been sensitive to external and internal environmental changes. It is evident that the universities in Kenya are operating in a different environment than they did since their inception and face the challenge of choosing which strategy to adopt to cope with this fast paced scenario. The choices made therefore will determine their success or failure. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of strategic choice among universities in Kenya. This study was guided by contingency and resource dependency theories and reviewed past studies on the topic to identify a knowledge gap. The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design. The target population was the 71 universities in Kenya according to the Commission for University Education. To avoid one person bias, the university registrars and heads of department were identified as the key respondents. The study used primary data which was collected using a structured questionnaire that was either hand delivered or sent online to respondents. A pilot study to pretest and validate the questionnaire was done using 7 universities which represented 10% of the 71 universities in Kenya. The Cronbach's Alpha Co-efficient was computed for the Likert questions which were deemed reliable because they scored reliab...

Otieno Manaseh The relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya

Inflation in Kenya has been a common phenomenon since independence. The focus of this study is to determine whether there exists an empirical relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya. The study concluded that though there seemed to be no long run relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya, their association was only detectable in periods characterized by shocks in inflationary trends. The study recommends that Kenya as a country should device means of effectively maintaining inflation at low levels. This can be achieved by; reducing government expenditure so as to avoid a situation of deficit monetization to cover for the budget deficit, development in agricultural technology so that the food production ceases to be rain dependent, research and development in the energy sector so that crude oil becomes an alternative rather than the major source of energy in the country. High and sustainable economic growth should be considered paramount in all efforts towards reducing the level of inequality and alleviating poverty.

This study evaluates the technical efficiency and the changes in total factor productivity of public primary schools Kenya grouped into 72 districts. The approaches used are the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and DEA-based Malmquist productivity index. In addition, a second-stage tobit regression is estimated to determine the possible causes of inefficiency. Mean scores in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination are used as output while gross enrolments, pupil-classes ratio and pupil-teacher ratio are used as inputs. In the second stage, a dummy variable to capture the location of the district is included in the model. The analysis of Tobit regression shows a negative significant relationship between Pupil Teacher Ratio is and efficiency thus high pupil teacher ratio is associated with inefficiency. Districts located in urban areas are found to perform better than their rural counterparts.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich VWL - Umweltökonomie, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: To communicate their efforts in increasing the eco-efficiency of flying, airlines have started publishing more and more environmental reports in the recent past. Although there is now more transparency within the market than decades before the remaining question of this development is: What goals do the companies want to fulfil with their publications and how credible is environmental reporting in a sector that has often been heavily criticized for the effects of its business on the environment? The aim of the study to which this abstract refers to was to develop a model which allows evaluating environmental reports of airlines and come to a conclusion about their credibility. By using a benchmarking approach including a quantitative and qualitative analysis it was possible to get an overview how airlines deal with the problem of credibility in practice. To come to a conclusion in this point, in a first step a total of 24 environmental reports of globally operating airlines were assessed with the help of a credit point system. By measuring the quality of the reports with five main criteria (general company information/vision strategy and management/ecological aspects/credibility/formality) a first ranking could be build which showed that there are big differences in the existing reports concerning quality, transparency and credibility. While almost all a...

Waithera Mwangi Naomi Land Adjudication and Consolidation Processess in Kenya

The question of absolute ownership of land in Kenya has remained a thorny issue, revolving around complex laws and lengthy procedures of adjudication, consolidation and registration of land. Land ownership has remained an elusive dream for many Kenyans owing to unjust acquisition of land by British colonial settlers in the early 19th century. In spite of Kenya attaining independence in 1963, landlessness has continued to persist on a large scale with recurrent land disputes among individuals and between communities being reported. This project examined the adjudication and consolidation processes undertaken in Kenya since independence with the enactment of individual tenure of indigenous land as well as the redistribution of the former 'white highlands' to Africans of Kenyan descent. Koibatek District within Rift Valley Province was identified as the case study for review, where completed and ongoing adjudication exercises were studied in Chebaran and Aram Kindonin areas respectively. The report also highlights problems and concerns raised by Officers involved in the exercise and residents within the concerned adjudication sections & suggests various recommendations.

Benard Kilel Barriers to micro-insurance outreach for pastoralists and crop farmers in rural areas in Kenya

Micro insurance in Kenya is still undeveloped compared to micro credit and micro savings due to the fact that it offers no immediate benefits to the insured. Insurance companies in Kenya have been taking long to compensate their clients in the case of any peril and therefore insurance is seen as a way of stealing the money from the citizens. This thesis has looked into ways of making micro insurance locally available to both large and small scale crop farmers. It has gone a step further to investigate ways of merging up micro insurance and micro credit by using insurance as collateral to acquire loan. It was realized that there is a possibility of selling an insurance contract to a buyer of a produce whereby the farmer can later pay the premium after the harvest of the produce. Moreover, there is a possibility of the harvest being used as collateral when it is in the warehouse of the Kenya National and Cereals Produce Board (NCPB). This increases the creditworthiness of the otherwise not qualifying-for-credit farmer as well as the produce being stored waiting to hit the market highs in order to be sold for profit. To make use of the technology, this paper calls for the development of a mobile application that will enable farmers access information in real time on their mobile phones and thereby being able act accordingly.

This book outlines the creative process of making environmental management decisions using the approach called Structured Decision Making. It is a short introductory guide to this popular form of decision making and is aimed at environmental managers and scientists. This is a distinctly pragmatic label given to ways for helping individuals and groups think through tough multidimensional choices characterized by uncertain science, diverse stakeholders, and difficult tradeoffs. This is the everyday reality of environmental management, yet many important decisions currently are made on an ad hoc basis that lacks a solid value-based foundation, ignores key information, and results in selection of an inferior alternative. Making progress – in a way that is rigorous, inclusive, defensible and transparent – requires combining analytical methods drawn from the decision sciences and applied ecology with deliberative insights from cognitive psychology, facilitation and negotiation. The authors review key methods and discuss case-study examples based in their experiences in communities, boardrooms, and stakeholder meetings. The goal of this book is to lay out a compelling guide that will change how you think about making environmental decisions. Climate Forcing of Geological Hazards provides a valuable new insight into how climate change is able to influence, modulate and trigger geological and geomorphological phenomena, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and landslides; ultimately increasing the risk of natural hazards in a warmer world. Taken together, the chapters build a panorama of a field of research that is only now becoming recognized as important in the context of the likely impacts and implications of anthropogenic climate change. The observations, analyses and interpretations presented in the volume reinforce the idea that a changing climate does not simply involve the atmosphere and hydrosphere, but also elicits potentially hazardous responses from the solid Earth, or geosphere. Climate Forcing of Geological Hazards is targeted particularly at academics, graduate students and professionals with an interest in environmental change and natural hazards. As such, we are hopeful that it will encourage further investigation of those mechanisms by which contemporary climate change may drive potentially hazardous geological and geomorphological activity, and of the future ramifications for society and economy.

Rock magnetic cyclostratigraphy merges environmental magnetism, in which rock magnetic measurements are used to detect past environmental change, and cyclostratigraphy, in which cyclic variations of lithology or a sedimentary rock’s physical properties are related to astronomically-forced paleoclimate change. In addition to providing paleoclimate data, cyclostratigraphy can establish high-resolution chronostratigraphy for a sequence of sedimentary rocks, even at distant times in Earth’s history. This book provides an overview of concepts underlying these two techniques, recipes for the time series analysis of cyclostratigraphy, and case studies to illustrate the variety and breadth of problems addressed by rock magnetic cyclostratigraphy. New Analytical Methods in Earth and Environmental Science Because of the plethora of analytical techniques now available, and the acceleration of technological advance, many earth scientists find it difficult to know where to turn for reliable information on the latest tools at their disposal, and may lack the expertise to assess the relative strengths or limitations of a particular technique. This new series will address these difficulties by providing accessible introductions to important new techniques, lab and field protocols, suggestions for data handling and interpretation, and useful case studies. The series represents an invaluable and trusted source of information for researchers, advanced students and applied earth scientists wishing to familiarise themselves with emerging techniques in their field. This study is carried on the premise that the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the worship, social and development life of the church remains unsatisfactory. As the pioneer in work with persons with disabilities, the church in Kenya is expected to provide the best inclusion model programmes. The study addressed prevailing perceptions which impact on the inclusion of persons with disabilities; the social, theological and physical barriers to the inclusion; support services which could enhance inclusion; and, training and other interventions needed to improve the sensitivity of the church leadership to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the church life. Data collection was through interviews of persons with disabilities and a focus group. The study recognized that inclusion is largely impacted by attitudes and perceptions which lead to discriminatory and oppressive church and societal structures. It recommended ways in which the church could provide a social, physical and theological environment in which persons with disabilities may realise their full potential in the life of the church.

From this study it is found that all the EVs affect HLS in different magnitudes and which in turn alter the life style of the people of respective area. Eight HLS outcomes were identified according to CARE's HLS model namely food security, education, health, shelter, personal safety, nutrition, water, and community participation. It has been observed that majority of the households are subjected to insecurity in case of all of the outcomes. Food security status is in worsening condition among the eight outcomes where 79% households remain in food insecurity. High impact on crop failure, vegetation loss, and reduction in fisheries resources may make such food insecurity.

Hydrogeology: Principles and Practice provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of hydrogeology to enable the reader to appreciate the significance of groundwater in meeting current and future water resource challenges. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect advances in the field since 2004. The book presents a systematic approach to understanding groundwater. Earlier chapters explain the fundamental physical and chemical principles of hydrogeology, and later chapters feature groundwater investigation techniques in the context of catchment processes, as well as chapters on groundwater quality and contaminant hydrogeology. Unique features of the book are chapters on the applications of environmental isotopes and noble gases in the interpretation of aquifer evolution, and on regional characteristics such as topography, compaction and variable fluid density in the explanation of geological processes affecting past, present and future groundwater flow regimes. The last chapter discusses groundwater resources and environmental management, and examines the role of groundwater in integrated river basin management, including an assessment of possible adaptation responses to the impacts of climate change. Throughout the text, boxes and a set of colour plates drawn from the authors’ teaching and research experience are used to explain special topics and to illustrate international case studies ranging from transboundary aquifers and submarine groundwater discharge to the over-pressuring of groundwater in sedimentary basins. The appendices provide conversion tables and useful reference material, and include review questions and exercises, with answers, to help develop the reader’s knowledge and problem-solving skills in hydrogeology. This accessible textbook is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students primarily in earth sciences, environmental sciences and physical geography with an interest in hydrogeology or groundwater science. The book will also find use among practitioners in hydrogeology, soil science, civil engineering and planning who are involved in environmental and resource protection issues requiring an understanding of groundwater. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: – Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – Novel analytical results of the 25-year investigations of groundwater contamination caused by Chernobyl-born radionuclides – The wealth of data on different modes of radioactive transport in the atmosphere, water, and soils, and along the food chains – The hydrogeological and physico-chemical processes and factors in groundwater contaminated zones – The applicability of commonly used methods of the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability – A unique method of fluid dynamics that involves an anomalously fast migration of contaminants through zones of preferential flow from the land surface toward groundwater – Building confidence in the assessment of migration pathways of radionuclides in the biosphere – Assessment and prediction of the consequences of the nuclear accident, which can shed light on protection from global nuclear accidents – Analogue information for different nuclear waste disposal and environmental projects around the world
