The main source for the detection of organic micropollutants in surface water is their incomplete removal during conventional waste water treatment processes. The use of advanced oxidation processes might therefore be a useful method to overcome this problem, and to degrade micropollutnats by the formation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. This study was therefore designed to investigate the toxicological properties (cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and estrogenic) of several substances before and after ozonation or UV/H2O2 treatment in either waste water treatment plant effluents or HPLC-water using toxicological in vitro methods. In general it can be said that ozonation as well as the oxidation using a combination of UV radiation and hydrogen peroxide are two useful methods for the removal of the here tested substances from the effluents of waste water treatment plants in regard to their degradation and to prevent the formation of toxic oxidation by-products. The successful use of toxicological in vitro methods for the detection of biological effects of waste water treatment plant effluents in combination with advanced oxidation processes has also been shown.

Being familiar with characteristics of industrial town effluents from various wastewater treatment units, which have high qualitative and quantitative variations and more uncertainties compared to urban wastewaters, plays very effective role in governing them. With regard to environmental issues, proper operation of wastewater treatment plants is of particular importance that in the case of inappropriate utilization, they will cause serious problems. In order to achieve a better and efficient control over the operation of an industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), powerful mathematical tool can be used that is based on recorded data from some basic parameters of wastewater during a period of treatment plant operation. For the first time in Iran, the multilayer perceptron feed forward neural network with a hidden layer and stop training method was used to predict quality parameters of the industrial effluent. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique was applied to improve performance of generated models of neural networks. Also, factor analysis method were used to determine the effective parameters that improve the models accuracy and efficiency.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is recently promoted as an upgrading technology for highly wet streams such as digestate from biogas plants, sewage sludge, and other waste biomass. It converts raw feedstock into a coal-like product known as hydrochar. The resulting hydrochar has fuel characteristics similar to lignite coal; potential for soil amendment, or for material use. Besides the solid phase, HTC further yields a highly contaminated waste water, which cannot be released to the environment without further processing. The aim of this study is to analyze the feasibility of treating HTC waste water by anaerobic digestion (AD). First of all, the general AD feasibility and long-term stability of HTC waste water as a sole substrate is tested by experimental means. Hereby, the focus is placed on AD process performance and potential inhibitory effects. Furthermore, the study includes the economic and energetic assessment of an industrial-scale HTC plant supplemented by anaerobic waste water treatment.

Depending on the pollutant type, certain wastewater treatment technologies can be very energy intensive. This "Diplomarbiet" looks at Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation (CWAO) for treatment of organic contaminated waste water. With an aim to reduce energy consumption a new catalyst was designed to enable total oxidation of organic contaminants in water at a much lower temperature compared to existing catalysts. This in turn allows to operate the CWAO at much lower operating pressures as compared to conventional CWAO utilizing noble metal catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrated good stability and activity over extended period and no significant leaching was observed. Low temperature CWAO is an effective technology for treatment of organic contaminated waste and its application range can be extended if coupled with other wastewater treatment technologies.

The concept of employing Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) to collectively treat effluents emanating from a number of industries is assuming rapid significance due to industrialization and expected reduced cost of collective treatment. Several technologies are available to remediate water that is contaminated by industrial pollutant. However, many of these technologies are costly (e.g. excavation of contaminated material and chemical/physical treatment) or do not achieve a long-term nor aesthetic solution. Phytoremediation can provide a cost-effective, long-lasting and aesthetic solution for remediation of contaminated sites. In many cases, especially in tropical or subtropical areas, invasive plants such as the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (P. stratiotes L.) are used in these phytoremediation water systems. This is because, compared to native plants, these invasive plants show a much higher nutrient removal efficiency with their high nutrient uptake capacity, fast growth rate, and big biomass production. In the active growth season, for instance, water hyacinth plants can double in number and biomass in 6 to 15 days. This study shows the importance of phytoremediation in the phytoremediation of industrial waste.

Water is a valuable product, which should be used carefully. Increased global consumption of water has become a growing concern from a few decades, which has increased the demand of water recycling and reuse of waste-water by treating it with appropriate methods and technologies to meet the needs and aspirations of future generation. The reuse and recycling of laundry waste-water was carried out at lab scale. In this study, two random laundries were selected. A survey of PU and LCWU hostel laundries was made to characterize the laundry waste-water. A low cost sand and gravel filter was designed to reuse the laundry waste-water for the first rinse. Treated water was considered as low-grade water, which was found suitable for the first rinse of clothes in both laundries. By the uses of this low-grade water, 0.7m3 and 0.8m3 of fresh water from PU and LCWU laundries could be save daily.

The effectiveness of ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) and ripe Musa cardaba (MCR) peels in the removal of Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions was investigated. The amount of metal ions sorbed depended on the metal ion - adsorbent contact time, ion concentration and adsorbent weight. Weight of adsorbent was varied between 0.1 - 0.4g; contact time, 5 - 25 minutes; and ion concentration, 0.01 - 0.04M. The results indicated that Musa sapientum (Ripe) showed higher percentage sorption in removing metal ions from waste water than Musa cardaba (Ripe) peels. The peak percentage sorption of metal ions by MSR peel waste are; Cd2+ (99.95%), Fe2+ (100%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.92%) while metal ions by MCR peel waste was; Cd2+ (99.74%), Fe2+ (99.83%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.60%). The results obtained above showed that both adsorbent species are favourable for sorption and removal of the test heavy metals from their aqueous environment. Nevertheless, ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) is highly recommended for both Fe2+ and Pb2+ uptake due to its sorption capacity and efficiency.

Inspired by one of the main challenges of the 21st century, achieving a worldwide sustainable development, the paper suggests a different approach of perceiving and treating waste in general and organic waste in particular. It argues that a community-based approach based on cooperatives could be the answer to the waste issue, but could also provide a canvas for the successful and inclusive achievement of the SDGs in Benin.

Waste management is a big challenge in a developing country like India. Although management processes have been devised for MSW but wastes from chemical industries, including their sludge still have dumping as the only option. I had the opportunity to work for my Master’s thesis at Vapi Waste & Effluent Management Co. Ltd in Gujarat. The work is on the waste to energy aspect of the industrial waste. Main focus of the study was to see if re-activated sludge (RAS) obtained as a waste from the effluent treatment plant can be used to generate methane using an anaerobic digester and further analyse the purity level of methane obtained from it. During the course of the experiment various parameters were studied namely, MLSS, VSS, COD, Alkalinity and VFA. The results were recorded on a daily basis and for better understanding graphs have been plotted corresponding to various results. These results helped in the vivid understanding of the working of an anaerobic system, throwing light on the operational and managerial aspect of an anaerobic sludge digester. The study also showed that this process considerably reduces the volume of solid waste being disposed to the landfill.

This book describes a dynamic model for a linear Fresnel collector field of a solar refrigeration plant. The collector field concentrates solar radiations on a tube that heats up water that is used by an absorption machine to produce chilled air for refrigeration purposes. The model takes into account the solar radiation losses produced by the mirrors and the absorbing tube structure as well as the temperatures in 64 segments of the receiving tube and water. Although the dynamic model is of high dimension and nonlinear, the identification problem can be expressed as a linear problem in model parameters. The least square method was used for identification. The model was validated comparing the simulation results with the plant data for diifferent operating conditions.
