Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution addresses the public health aspects of drinking water treatment and distribution. It explains the different water treatment processes, such as pretreatment, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and their impacts on waterborne microbial pathogens and parasites. Drinking water quality may be degraded in water distribution systems—microorganisms form biofilms within distribution systems that allow them to flourish. Various methodologies have been proposed to assess the bacterial growth potential in water distribution systems. Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution also places drinking water quality and public health issues in context; it addresses the effect of bioterrorism on drinking water safety, particularly safeguards that are in place to protect consumers against the microbial agents involved. In addition, the text delves into research on drinking water quality in developing countries and the low-cost treatment technologies that could save lives. The text also examines the microbiological water quality of bottled water, often misunderstood by the public at large.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: A, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (UAAR), course: MSc (Hons) Agri.Economics, language: English, abstract: Water is a limiting factor for sustainable agriculture in Barani (Arid). However, rainfall is the only source of water the spatial and temporal variation of which is very high. Therefore conservation and management of this source is vital for agriculture development and socio-economic uplift of the area. This study was, mainly, devised to address land distribution problems and consequent farm productivity in the study area. Furthermore, level of land distribution disparities was focused on to observe its relationship with different on-farm and socio-economic indicators including gross margins, cropping intensity crop diversity, income distribution disparities and institutional credit availability etc. All of the aforesaid indicators were also assessed for small, medium and large farm size categories. The farmers were divided into two main categories irrigated and rainfed farmers. Land was observed evenly distributed in irrigated area while land distribution was found most skewed in rainfed area. The performance of most of the indicators i.e. yield, gross margins, farm income, labour productivity, income distribution, cropping intensity and crop diversity was found better in irrigated as compared to rainfed. While marginal factor productivity, irrigation productivity an...

A survey was carried out in three blocks namely Barse, Fagune and Surtibang of Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve in March-May, 2007 to establish baseline information about Red Panda. The distribution of Red Panda was assessed through informal discussions with local people, herders and reserve staff followed by the dropping survey. Vegetation analysis was done by using square quadrats of 10×10 sq. m for trees and 4×4 sq. m for shrubs to determine Important Value Index. The study revealed the clumped type distribution pattern of Red Panda which was affected by different factors like presence of Arundinaria spp., north facing slope, water source availability, habitat condition, human activities, and livestock grazing. 4 Red Pandas were seen and were identical in morphological characters. Distribution of Red Panda mostly occurred in the altitudinal range of 3200-3500 m where Abies, Rhododendron, Betula and Arundinaria were dominant. Red Panda mostly preferred northwest facing slopes. Illegal felling, looping, hunting, poaching and over exploitation were major threats to red panda The text in the book reveals the distribution and conservation status of Red Panda in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve.

This book, RURAL WATER SUPPLY discusses, essentially, the basic fundamentals of Hydrology and Water Resources. It proffers solutions to the issue of non-availability of safe water for human consumption. It's also emphasized on the importance of spatial distribution of social services such as potable water supply thereby creating an essential platform for rational planning of water scheme most especially in the less developed cities. The book, also, employs much illustration from the local environment as well as the developed nations of the world. In addition, discussions are followed by Plates, Figures and Tables. These efforts are aimed at simplifying the central tenet of the subject, and this is necessary in order to establish a solid foundation for the learners who are, in most cases, very skeptical about water resource management. This book, therefore, serves as a bold step taken towards allaying all categories of fears about Hydrology and Water Resources. More so, tertiary students will benefit immensely from this book as well as anybody else who is interested in water resources management.

Wheat is the major cereal crop of the world and cultivated over diverse climatic conditions. In last few years, climatic conditions have been drastically changed. Most part of the world is under low water availability especially in South Asia and Africa. In India, 29 % of the total cultivable area faces drought condition out of which 10 % is under severe drought. Drought threaten the agricultural productivity of many developing countries, especially in South Asia and Africa, to feed their ever growing population. Drought is one of the most common environmental stresses that affects growth and development of plants through alterations in metabolism and gene expression. It is a permanent constraint to agricultural production in developing countries. Improving drought tolerance and productivity is one of the most difficult tasks for researchers. In addition to this, the meager availability of drought resistant cultivars further adds to the problem. It is therefore, necessary to appraise and screen wheat genetic resources to identify the sources of the resistance for breeders to construct new wheat varieties.

The Earth's human population is expected to pass eight billion by the year 2025, while rapid growth in the global economy will spur ever increasing demands for natural resources. The world will consequently face growing scarcities of such vital renewable resources as cropland, fresh water, and forests. Thomas Homer-Dixon argues in this sobering book that these environmental scarcities will have profound social consequences--contributing to insurrections, ethnic clashes, urban unrest, and other forms of civil violence, especially in the developing world. Homer-Dixon synthesizes work from a wide range of international research projects to develop a detailed model of the sources of environmental scarcity. He refers to water shortages in China, population growth in sub-Saharan Africa, and land distribution in Mexico, for example, to show that scarcities stem from the degradation and depletion of renewable resources, the increased demand for these resources, and/or their unequal distribution. He shows that these scarcities can lead to deepened poverty, large-scale migrations, sharpened social cleavages, and weakened institutions. And he describes the kinds of violence that can result from these social effects, arguing that conflicts in Chiapas, Mexico and ongoing turmoil in many African and Asian countries, for instance, are already partly a consequence of scarcity. Homer-Dixon is careful to point out that the effects of environmental scarcity are indirect and act in combinati...

The Dirichlet distribution appears in many areas of application, which include modelling of compositional data, Bayesian analysis, statistical genetics, and nonparametric inference. This book provides a comprehensive review of the Dirichlet distribution and two extended versions, the Grouped Dirichlet Distribution (GDD) and the Nested Dirichlet Distribution (NDD), arising from likelihood and Bayesian analysis of incomplete categorical data and survey data with non-response. The theoretical properties and applications are also reviewed in detail for other related distributions, such as the inverted Dirichlet distribution, Dirichlet-multinomial distribution, the truncated Dirichlet distribution, the generalized Dirichlet distribution, Hyper-Dirichlet distribution, scaled Dirichlet distribution, mixed Dirichlet distribution, Liouville distribution, and the generalized Liouville distribution. Key Features: Presents many of the results and applications that are scattered throughout the literature in one single volume. Looks at the most recent results such as survival function and characteristic function for the uniform distributions over the hyper-plane and simplex; distribution for linear function of Dirichlet components; estimation via the expectation-maximization gradient algorithm and application; etc. Likelihood and Bayesian analyses of incomplete categorical data by using GDD, NDD, and the generalized Dirichlet distribution are illustrated in detail through the EM algorithm and data augmentation structure. Presents a systematic exposition of the Dirichlet-multinomial distribution for multinomial data with extra variation which cannot be handled by the multinomial distribution. S-plus/R codes are featured along with practical examples illustrating the methods. Practitioners and researchers working in areas such as medical science, biological science and social science will benefit from this book.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,0, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Economics), course: Economics 477: Economic Development of Africa, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) program in South Africa and its economic justification by analyzing the trends in both, intra- and interracial inequality, since the implementation of BEE. Even though inequality is driven by many different factors, this paper attempts to analyze whether BEE was able to effectively reduce inequality in the way that it was intended. My findings suggest that BEE might have helped to reduce inequality between different races, but that it increased inequality among black people.During Apartheid, black people were excluded from major parts of South Africa's economy. This resulted in an unequal income distribution in South Africa. Even after Apartheid ended in 1994 income was distributed unequally between races. In order to reduce this inequality and equalize opportunities between the different races in South Africa, the government implemented an affirmative action program called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in 2003. In this case and in the following sections, the word "black" defines a racial group, including Africans, coloreds and Indians and can thus be used as synonym for "non-whites." BEE introduced a scorecard which rates companies based on their economic inclusion of black peopl...

Stable environmental isotopes are ideal tracers because they are constituents of the water molecule itself. Isotopes are crucial aspects for water quality and water management. Determining water residence time with a good accuracy for a hydrological process that is usually complex to model and predict is a challenging task. Through years, researchers and scientists have developed different approaches to accurately estimate water residence time. However, researchers are often hampered by data availability to test their models and to accurately determine water residence time. In this study, long dataset of stable environmental isotopes was used, and water residence time was determined using different approaches with varying degree of complexities. Suitability and limitation of each approach were addressed. Further, this study shows that environmental isotopes are useful tools in climate change studies.

Malaria is a serious health and economic problem in Africa, afflicting more than half of the continent's population. Although HICV/AIDS, TB and nutritional deficiencies pose major development problems on the continent, the challenges presented by malaria are of a different kind, because the disease is widespread, persistent and grossly underestimated by the general population. The importance of malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in the development agenda, is now recognised in Goal 6 of the Millennium Goals. This book provides the evidence required to design and implement malaria control strategies in Africa. The chapters analyse the nexus between poverty and malaria with a focus on policies that can be implemented at various levels of society to fight the disease. Malaria and Poverty in Africa is the outcome of a research sponsored by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Augustin Kwasi Fosu is the Director, Economic Division of the United Nations Commision for Africa, Addis Ababa, and former Director of Research at the AERC, Nairobi. Climate change projections for the UK are for wetter winters, drier summers and significance changes in temperature regimes. Hence, it is imperative to determine species-specific responses to predicted changes in summer rainfall and provide further understanding of the changes in growth and development in response to a decrease in water availability. The study on silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) showed that plant height, plant diameter, biomass and moisture content reduced significantly with increased water stress. The stressed plants had lower stomatal conductance, transpiration and net CO2 assimilation than plants in the controlled treatment. B. pendula showed higher height and diameter growth, lower shoot-to-root ratio and superior physiological traits indicating that this species can perform better than B. pubescens in future water-deficit conditions.

Innovations now exist that can help meet the needs of the BoP while creating opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. However, BoP customers are often located in remote areas with poor infrastructure, face low levels of affordability and lack access to finance. As a result, finding ways to distribute to these customers in a low-cost, efficient, scalable and sustainable fashion is a major challenge. "The Bumpy Road to the BoP" seeks to address that challenge. Based on a review of BoP literature and an in-depth study of 5 BoP ventures in Ghana, this book identifies the key BoP distribution challenges and solutions and categorises these according to the 4As of BoP distribution - Availability, Affordability, Awareness and Acceptability. The author proposes a BoP Distribution Framework, incorporating a set of principles and alternatives for addressing the challenge of distribution, in the hope of making the road to the BoP a little less bumpy.

Details the water research applications of nanotechnology in various areas including environmental science, remediation, membranes, nanomaterials, and water treatment At the nano size, materials often take on unique and sometimes unexpected properties that result in them being ‘tuned’ to build faster, lighter, stronger, and more efficient devices and systems, as well as creating new classes of materials. In water research, nanotechnology is applied to develop more cost-effective and high-performance water treatment systems, as well as to provide instant and continuous ways to monitor water quality. This volume presents an array of cutting-edge nanotechnology research in water applications including treatment, remediation, sensing, and pollution prevention. Nanotechnology applications for waste water research have significant impact in maintaining the long-term quality, availability, and viability of water. Regardless of the origin, such as municipal or industrial waste water, its remediation utilizing nanotechnology can not only be recycled and desalinized, but it can simultaneously detect biological and chemical contamination. Application of Nanotechnology in Water Research describes a broad area of nanotechnology and water research where membrane processes (nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and nanoreactive membranes) are considered key components of advanced water purification and desalination technologies that remove, reduce, or neutralize water contaminants that threaten human health and/or ecosystem productivity and integrity. Various nanoparticles and nanomaterials that could be used in water remediation (zeolites, carbon nanotubes, self-assembled monolayer on mesoporous supports, biopolymers, single-enzyme nanoparticles, zero-valent iron nanoparticles, bimetallic iron nanoparticles, and nanoscale semiconductor photocatalysts) are discussed. The book also covers water-borne infectious diseases as well as water-borne pathogens, microbes, and toxicity approach.

Water has always been an essential element of the territory and of the environmental system and is an irreplaceable asset for the development of various human activities and the improvement of quality of life. Among the various uses of water, the one intended for human consumption is certainly of vital importance, as evidenced by the considerable efforts made by the men of the most ancient cultures in creating works aimed at the transport and distribution of potable water, even very complex, works of which few examples remain today. The aqueducts therefore constitute one of the most important issues of hydraulic engineering, which has attracted more and more attention of researchers and engineers, due to the gradually increased amount of water required by humans to meet their needs and the consequent difficulties in finding new water resources, to ensure water of appropriate characteristics. The new challenges raised by the European Water Framework Directive by imposing cost recovery to improve water efficiency and environmental sustainability have led to a significant change at all levels of water management.

The report, building on a policy dialogue with a range of stakeholders in Korea, analyses how economic policy instruments under the responsibility of the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport can be adjusted to contribute to water policy objectives. It also investigates how Smart Water Management Korea, an initiative by K-water that combines information and communication technology with water technology, can be harnessed to better contribute to water management in the country. Finally, it identifies some of the limitations of prevalent water allocation regimes which need to be addressed to make the best use of available water resources.Since 1965, the Korean Government has invested heavily in quantitative development strategies to meet water needs, and despite highly variable water availability, this has allowed for and facilitated rapid urbanisation and economic growth. However, several long-term trends are expected to affect the capacity of the current water management system to adequately respond to current and future water risks, such as rapid ageing of the population, fiscal consolidation and climate change. These call for a renewed emphasis on water use efficiency.

In many parts of the world, cities dump untreated human wastes, along with industrial and agricultural wastes, into the same rivers or lakes, from which other cities (or other neighborhoods of the same city) extract their water supply. Preserving sources of safe water supply, in the face of rapid urban growth, requires advance planning -often on a regional basis - plus enforcement of watershed protection measures and application of urban growth restrictions. Industries with toxic effluents, or high-density residential developments with untreated wastes, need to be steered away from water sources or areas that will need to be drawn upon as water sources in the future. Economic incentives or regulations can be set up to accomplish this dealing with aging distribution systems imposes high economic costs for resource-strapped urban water and sanitation service (WSS) providers. It is not rare for 40% or more of all water that enters the distribution system to be unaccounted for through theft, illegal hook-ups, abuses of the right to free water, and, most importantly, leakage, either through public mains or household connections.

This research focuses on: (1) explaining the observed increase in well flow rate resulting from long shut-in periods in some production wells, and (2) investigating whether water-flooding can improve hydrocarbon recovery in the greater Bakken formations. Relevant is-sues include pore size and distribution, pore architecture, hydrocarbon composition, salinity, wettability, capillarity, osmotic pressure, and geomechanical alterations of pore connectivity because of waterflooding. Waterflooding may induce an increase in the shear stress followed by rock failure because of an increase in pore pressure and a decrease in temperature. Two numerical models were developed to: (1) investigate the effect of gravity, capillarity and osmoticity on phase re-distribution during well shut-in and (2) determine the effect of induced stress generated by waterflooding on creation of microfractures to stimulate reservoir performance.
