Wavelength conversion has been acknowledged as one of the most significant optical processing functions. Ultra-high data rate all-optical wavelength conversion is an enabling technology for providing wavelength flexibility, increasing the capacity of photonics networks and enhancing optimized all-optical routing and switching. Several all-optical wavelength conversion approaches have been studied and investigated, which are based on nonlinearities in optical fibers. Nonlinear effects mainly applied in fiber-based wavelength conversion are four wave mixing (FWM) and self phase modulation (SPM), all of which originate from the Kerr effect. However, to make use of this nonlinear phenomenon in optical signal processing, this requires that a suitable fiber be available. In this book, wavelength conversion based on both SPM and FWM at 1550 nm has been demonstrated using different types of fibers. A numerical simulation is used to predict the performance of each type of fiber and to address the potential of each fiber type in wavelength conversion applications.

Copper oxide nanowires are source of a great interest in the scientific community due to numerous properties and the wide range of possible applications of this nanoscale material. In this project, CuO nanowire growth was achieved using an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) reactor via dry oxidation at various temperatures and gas flow rates. The growth of nanowires was successful, when the substrate was a thin copper foil. In our experiments, copper oxide nanowires formed at 600 oC with ramp rate = 30 C/min. Afterwards, transport of nanowires on p+Si(001) was studied using an ultrasonicator. The best results of transfer were found when the ultrasonication lasted twenty seconds. In this case, 1.82 ml of solution with nanowires was dropped on the surface of silicon, which was successfully covered with copper oxide nanowires. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum at 300 K consisted of a broad peak centered at 419 nm. Moreover, time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) PL measurements were taken at room temperature (RT) for 400 nm emission wavelength over a time span of 50 ns.

This work presents a comprehensive study of the four wave mixing (FWM) effect in the highly nonlinear fibre (HNLF) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA); and their applications. The nonlinearity parameters such as zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW), chromatic dispersion (CD) and nonlinear coefficient of HNLF has successfully investigated by using several FWM techniques. Results from all techniques have been achieved approximately similar to the manufacturer specification. This technique is then employed for the measurement of the FWM power and FWM efficiency in a SOA, in addition to the gain performance, which is measured using conventional methods. Based on these parameters, a good agreement between experiments and numerical has been obtained. This characterization is important for nonlinear application such as wavelength conversion, fibre optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) and multiwavelength fibre laser. Wavelength conversion is a key for wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. Wavelength converter based on HNLF and SOA are promising candidates for implementing wavelength conversion.

It is estimated that the scaling of conventional silicon MOSFETs will end around the year 2020. While this certainly does not preclude the use of silicon in future devices, it does require new thoughts on the types of practical devices that can be used in integrated circuits. Namely, those that reduce power and work at least partly on the principles of quantum mechanics (such as spintronic or tunneling devices) will tend to be favored. The research presented herein is based on the fabrication and transport properties of nanometer-scale devices in silicon. The most promising of these structures are nanowires fabricated with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). These high-density nanowires display the low-temperature phenomena of weak localization and one-dimensional conduction. Long-term applications of such nanowires and derivative devices include alternatives to conventional CMOS transistors and very sensitive charge and/or spin-detection devices. In addition, focused ion beams (FIBs) have been used to directly and precisely implant ions in the hope that they may be used to contact nanodevices, but surface damage may preclude that possibility.

The work focuses on the investigation of single Co-implanted ZnO nanowires using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques with a nanometer resolution. The ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown on Si substrates using VLS mechanism. The synthesized ZnO NWs were doped with Co via an ion implantation process. For the first time, the combined use of these techniques allows us to study the dopant homogeneity, composition, short- and large-range structural order of single NWs. The nano-XRF results indicate the successful and homogeneous Co doping with the desired concentrations in the ZnO NWs by an ion implantation process. The nano-XAS and XRD data analyses provide new insights into the lattice distortions produced by the structural defect formation generated by the ion implantation process. These findings highlight the importance of the post-implantation thermal annealing to recover the structure of single ZnO NWs at the nanometer length scale. In general, the methodologies used in this work open new avenues for the application of synchrotron based multi-techniques for detailed study of single semiconductor NWs at the nanoscale.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Physics - Other, grade: 1,0, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: In this thesis the InAs(111)B surface and III-V semiconductor nanowires are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The morphology of InAs nanowires grown without gold particle is studied. Radial nanowire heterostructure such as InP core with InAs shell are analyzed and the wurtzite top facet is identified. Furthermore nanowire heterostructures with an InP core and InAs shell with induced stacking faults possibly giving rise to quantum dots, which could be used as quantum dot lasers or for quantum information processing, are investigated. A model is obtained based on morphology analysis and as top facet the wurtzite and are found. Furthermore stacking faults on top of a nanowire are seen. The analysis of the InAs(111)B surface shows the hexagonal pattern. Defects are determined to occur due to missing In atoms in the first layer. Spectroscopy next to those defects indicated no influence on the local electronic structure.

Production of nanostructured materials is currently an active area of research. It has been shown that some mechanical properties, such as hardness and toughness, increase with decreasing grain size in some materials. These materials often have improved thermal, electrical, and optical properties. It has been demonstrated that the size of nanomaterials and the structure of the outer layers determine their mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Manufacturing processes must produce nanosize materials of uniform dimensions and of strictly controlled surfaces to find practical applications. Ultimately, the structure of materials on the nanoscale is poorly understood. In this study, silicon carbide nanowires were produced reliably by two different methods: heating a mixture in an induction furnace for short times at different temperatures; and sintering separated precursors in a tube furnace for longer times at one temperature, while varying the precursors. The second method of production proved to be an excellent manufacturing process by which large quantities of pure SiC nanowires could be produced. The method is simple, easily reproduced, and relatively inexpensive.

In the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in research on the wavelength-scale design of materials to control optical information. Photonic crystal microcavities allow the trapping of optical fields in near fundamentally-small volumes, with many diverse applications such as filtering and switching. To effect conditional operations in a microcavity-based device, the nonlinear optical properties of multi-mode microcavities must be explored, and this theme forms the focus of this book. A resonant scattering technique is developed to si­multaneously excite multiple microcavity modes with a short-pulse laser. Using this method, the second-order nonlinear properties of InP-based microcavities are investigated, revealing sum-frequency mixing between two modes. An ultrafast pump-probe experiment is then described which demonstrates all-optical switching and frequency conversion in a silicon microcavity.This book should be a significant resource for experimentalists in the nanophotonics community, as it contains comprehensive chapters discussing each of the techniques of sample nanofabrication, numeri­cal modeling, and optical spectroscopy that are instrumental to this work.

Over two-dimensional Folded Optical Orthogonal Coding (FOOC) network, a simple threshold detection scheme is illustrated to detect the number of simultaneous network users and to adjust the detection threshold value instantaneously. A special wavelength called pilot wavelength is added into the original transmission patterns of every network user. At the receiver, we can acquire the number of simultaneous network users from the power of the pilot wavelength. Consequently, by adjusting the detection power threshold to the optimum threshold value, we can decrease the bit error rate (BER) and improve the system performance for the discussed two- dimensional optical code-division multiple-access (2D-OCDMA) network. Compared with conventional network system adopting prime codes or modified prime codes, the proposed FOOC network with pilot wavelength threshold detection shows an enhanced BER performance and supports more simultaneous network users.
