The book highlights a successful EFL teaching experience to blind learners by a blind teacher, explaining what the teacher did before, during, and after his successful teaching venture. The author was directly involved in this unique EFL teaching experience as he was the teacher's mentor, assistant and main observer throughout the whole experience. We have all had opportunity to sit under biblical teachers who inspired us. We have all had the misfortune of sitting under biblical teachers who made their subject matter appear dull and pointless. After sitting under several of both types of teachers Dr. Zemanek has put this book together. It is Dr. Zemanek's contention that there are four basic principles that every great teacher has developed as part of their lives. What Makes A Great Bible Teacher is deliberately designed to be a quick read. The goal of the book is to help each teacher, then professional and the periodic, to focus on what makes a genuinely great teacher. What Makes A Great Bible Teacher is a wonderful little book designed to help you take advantage of the four basic principles required to be a great teacher.

Teacher development programmes often fail to produce desired results for lack of conducive syllabus and material. This book is a must read for the ELT community in the Arab world, especially the EFL teachers and the three agencies that are pivotal to educational revolutions: Policy makers, Funding agencies and Teachers as well as a torchbearer for teacher trainers; it actually answers the in-service teachers' need for regular training courses based on their classroom requirements. The teacher in the EL classroom has multiple roles to play: efficient facilitator, monitor, and manager, to mention a few. What is even more challenging is that these roles cannot be defined in any paradigm but have to be constantly re-defined considering the pace at which the knowledge world changes. Teacher development is important also because it has a direct bearing on the learners' improvement. This book aims at tackling all these issues, sets the goals and designs the roads for their realization. Among the very first attempts of its kind in the Arab world, this book can bring teacher development to the core of educational enrichment from its current status of a programme that can be done without.

What does fundamental change in teaching and teacher education actually look like? This book is about teacher education reform and seeks to answer these and other questions. More specifically the book aims to showcase a disruptive model in teacher education and answer some of the ponderings around what teacher education could be and how it could be organized differently for the different world in which teachers now have to operate.

Research Paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: none, Jahangirnagar University (Department of English), course: Teaching EFL , 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Audio aids function as learning facilitators and teaching machines, and motivate the learner and arrest his/her attention during the instructional process. Though such aids are greatly helpful in L2 teaching and continually expanding their scope with the availability and development of technology, their use in the EFL class especially at the tertiary level in Bangladesh is still limited. This study was then designed to address varied issues related to the use of audio aids in the EFL class at the tertiary level in Bangladesh. It concludes that the use of audio aids in the EFL class is a plus, but the lack of teacher training, audio equipment and material and administrative support seriously restricts it. Hence, the researchers recommend proper teacher training, adequate audio equipment and material, necessary administrative support, and a well equipped language lab to ensure the optimal use of audio aids, and thus guarantee the learner's maximum benefit.

This book generally raises the issue of the lack of pedagogical training in Moroccan universities. On a more specific level, the study is an attempt to investigate the perceptions of the need for pedagogical training among EFL university teachers. One of the motives behind choosing this topic is the fact that training is not a requirement for recruitment in Moroccan universities. The second motive is the teachers' misconceptions of what makes a good teacher, and how they affect their teaching practices. Through the investigation, the study aims to find out how the teaches' perceptions of the need for training are influenced by their conceptions of teaching and learning, their perceptions of what teaching is, and the way they approach and deal with uncertainties in their teaching. The second purpose of the study is to argue for the need of a pedagogical training that can change the teachers' misconceptions, and that can promote effective EFL teaching practices.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Kassel (Literature: Language and Cultural Awareness), course: Department of English & Romance Languages, language: English, abstract: This term paper will take several questions into account by starting off with a general definition of the terms 'Literature, Language and Cultural Awareness' as they are the basis for talking about literature and literary texts. Afterwards, a precise definition of the terms will follow before the consequences for the EFL classroom will be mentioned which lead to a text example that shows how one can teach the aspects that have been mentioned before and why it is important to teach students literature at all. The text shows that students need to understand other cultural backgrounds in order to understand the whole text since we do not have the expression 'hills like white elephants' in Germany. As a result, this text is a good example for showing how important language and cultural awareness are in order to understand literary texts in the EFL classroom. When we talk about literature in the EFL classroom, we should first of all ask ourselves what we need to take into consideration in general when we want to deal with literary texts in the EFL classroom. Some questions arise like why one should teach literature in the EFL classroom and what kind of literature needs to be taught. It is important to read literary texts in the ...

The main research question addressed in this capstone is: what does the literature say about effective EFL approaches to be implemented in a private elementary school in Spain? In order to fully answer that question this capstone addressed the following question as well: what teaching strategies are effective for developing fluency in an EFL setting for children? The method of study was a systematic review of literature. Key influencers were Björklund and Suni (2000) and Björklund (2005). They studied a Finnish immersion school that used content-based instruction in a multilingual program with successful results. Another key influencer was Pérez-Vidal (2013). She discussed findings of several studies on CLIL programs in Spain and compared results of intensive ESL in Quebec with CLIL in Spain. The literature showed that content-based EFL instruction is the most effective approach for elementary EFL and effective teaching strategies are stories combined with drama, rhymes, and songs.

Psychology, language: English, abstract: Excellence is what universities inspire and inculcate to their students. What connect universities to their students are teachers. For the students, the teachers are the faces and images of excellence. Thus, what makes teachers exemplary of excellence as perceived by students? If students perceive their teacher as excellent and effective, does this perception impact on their academic performance? In the literature, there exists a consensus of what is an effective teacher. Studies focus on the qualities and traits of this teacher. Among these qualities, which one is most preferred by students? Do students with various academic performance differ in their perception and preference of an effective teacher? Are these qualities related to the academic performance of the students? This study shows that there is a ranking of qualities of an effective that the students with different academic performance prefer. And there is no relation between the perception of an effective and students' academic performance.

Cynthia Ruth Whitehead The Good Doctor in Medical Education 1910-2010

Ideas of what constitutes a good doctor underlie decisions about medical student selection, curriculum design and the structure of medical education at all levels of training. As with any social phenomenon, constructs of the good doctor are historically derived and socially negotiated. Factors at play include knowledge (what does a good doctor need to know), identity (who can become a good doctor) and notions about the relationship of doctors to society (the social responsibility or social accountability of the good doctor). Ideas about the good doctor tend to be considered as ‘truths’ in any era, with little attention to the assumptions that underpin any particular formulation. This work dissects dominant constructs of the good doctor in North American medical education between 1910 and 2010, using Foucauldian critical discourse analysis. The book identifies significant discursive shifts in the conception of the good doctor over the past century and explores the repeated rediscovery of a set of ‘truths’ that are portrayed by medical educators as new and urgent issues generation after generation.

In doing so, the author has first outlined the elements of faith that provide a basis for the formation of a morally sound vision of life, and elucidated what deeds, according to the Qur'an, are good and what are evil. A person who follows the straight path of righteousness and avoids evil deeds and sin, is assured a commensurate reward in the afterlife - a goal that is the dream of every man and woman.

The result is Capturing the Spark: Inspired Teaching, Thriving Schools. From finger-painting to A.P. Physics experiments, Cohen takes readers into classrooms for students of all ages and in a wide variety of subjects, at schools enrolling dozens or thousands of students, in traditional or alternative programs. Take a look inside more than 60 schools. How are teachers blending traditional and innovative practices? How does quality teacher training make a difference over a teacher's career? What makes Teachers of the Year unique? What are unions doing to improve education? What does it mean for a teacher to achieve National Board Certification? What can we learn from teachers who create and lead new schools?A veteran teacher with experience in leadership roles in statewide organizations, Cohen came up with the idea for Capturing the Spark after he encountered a troubling dissonance regarding public education. He continually met teachers whose creativity and dedication were making a positive difference in their own schools and in the broader field. Yet, in the media, in politics, and even in casual conversations, he kept encountering fear and anxiety about the deterio...

Teachers, Teachers, Teachers have great influence on us during the formative stages of our liver, either for good, and sometimes for not very good purposes. When we watch our teachers' mannerism, their impeccable grooming and attire, their use of good communication skills, we all want to be like them. Yes we want to become teachers like them. That is why I am a teacher today; but as a teacher of architecture, I have now come to learn that there were some things my teachers did not teach me. For instance, if only my teachers had told me what architecture really means; if only they had told me that at graduation as an "architect" my journey into this noble profession had just begun. If my teachers had told me that my learning process was a life-long process, maybe I would not be telling this story. This book is therefore my modest attempt at sharing my experiences as a teacher of this profession, and especially to intimate those on this course of endevour to be mindful of the fact that there are so many things your teachers did not, will not and could not teach you.

A glance at a typical classroom situation in Armenia will reveal a ubiquitous attitude: 'best' students are the most motivated ones and are the limelight of the class; therefore the teacher prefers to work merely with them, whereas 'bad' students are laid- back and disregarded by the teacher. Can this situation ever change? The crux of this study is the implementation of differentiated instruction for adult learners of English in an Armenian setting who have had previous exposure to language. A classroom experiement is described as one of the ways to differentiate EFL instruction based on learners' learning styles. The book provides an overview of differentiating instruction, describes the process and the outcomes of the classroom research, as well as suggests further directions for research. The advent of CLT methodologies and the concomitant calls for the integration of language functions into the EFL syllabus have resulted in the concept of ‘corrective feedback’ being a subject of controversy. Although adherents to CLT abandoned this reactive practice on the grounds of its alleged focus on students’ inaccuracies, the present study argues for the importance and necessity of integrating corrective feedback into CLT. The study attempted to provide possible answers to questions that pertain to the effectiveness of feedback or lack thereof, and whether the latter triggers or hinders classroom communication. Corrective feedback has the advantage of structuring students’ output with focus on communication and fluency. Given the centrality of the topic to language education, the book might be of use to EFL/ESL teachers and teacher trainees, as it may also interest general readership.

Written over two thousand years ago, Aristotle’s celebrated work discusses the various benefits and dangers of the major political systems of his time: republic, democracy, aristocracy, oligarchy and tyranny, with a view to deciding which constitutes the ideal polity. Along the way, we are treated to discussions on a wide swathe of topics, from music and the role of women, through warfare, slavery and the education of children, to the responsibilities of a citizen, and what constitutes the ‘good life’ (for Aristotle: “to achieve happiness and pursue virtue”). Not all of the great Philosopher’s conclusions chime with our modern ideas, but his penetrating, thought-provoking analyses will stir your mind, and surprise with their continued relevance.

This study analyses examples of classroom discourse, one of the most important influences on students' experience in schools, in EFL classes. The central idea of the author's enquiry is to compare classroom discourse in two secondary schools in two European countries, namely Austria on the one hand, and Spain on the other hand. The focus of the study is on EFL classes taught by a team of a non-native speaker teacher and a native speaker assistant. The purposes of this study are to gain insights into classroom communication, to compare classroom discourse in two different countries to see whether culturally specific rules of classroom communication might apply, and to investigate the contact situation of two different (if existent) communication strategies in classroom discourse. Therefore, the study aims to answer the following research question: Do the cultural modes of classroom communication in EFL classes (taught by a team of a teacher and an assistant) differ from each other? The data needed for this study were collected by means of video-recording; audio-portions were transcribed; and the data was analysed using methods of Conversational Analysis. The author focuses in particular on turn-taking, the occurrence of the IRE / IRF sequence and simultaneous speech, as well as restarts and pauses. The analysis shows how certain conversational structures, such as simultaneous speech or the IRE / IRF sequence, work in classroom discourse. The results hint at different cu...

A volume in The MARCES Book SeriesSeries Editor: Robert W. Lissitz, University of MarylandModeling student growth has been a federal policy requirement under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Inaddition to tracking student growth, the latest Race To The Top (RTTP) federal education policy stipulates theevaluation of teacher effectiveness from the perspective of added value that teachers contribute to studentlearning and growth. Student growth modeling and teacher value-added modeling are complex. Thecomplexity stems, in part, from issues due to non-random assignment of students into classes and schools, measurement error in students' achievement scores that are utilized to evaluate the added value of teachers, multidimensionality of the measuredconstruct across multiple grades, and the inclusion of covariates. Plato studied under Socrates and was Aristotle's teacher. Together these three Greeks developed the basis of philosophical thinking for the entire Western world. Plato was also a writer, mathematician, and founder of the Academy in Athens, which was the first university in Europe. Meno is one of the earliest dialogues in which Plato seeks to define virtue. Socrates is asked can virtue be taught. His response is that he as yet cannot define virtue. Plato tries to answer the question what makes good people good. Plato brings up this question later in his work Protagoras.

Teacher Development in Action offers a rich account of language teachers' engagement with the latest research in second language motivation on a year-long teacher development project. It offers an in-depth analysis of how language teachers mobilize (or not) their vast inner resources when they make sense of new material, and sheds light on why language classrooms do not always become acquisition-rich and motivating environments, even when teachers show great interest in new ideas and find them highly relevant to their practice. Drawing on a grounded theory ethnographic study of EFL teachers in Slovakia, this book, now in paperback, breaks new theoretical ground in the language teacher cognition domain and weaves together findings from field notes, classroom observations and interviews into an integrated model of Language Teacher Conceptual Change (LTCC). The new insights into the complex and dynamic nature of teacher development constitute an original contribution to the field of applied linguistics and have significant implications for second language teacher education and development.

Examination Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 7.0, Austral University of Chile (Institute of Linguistics and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences), course: English Language Teaching, language: English, abstract: The major aim of every English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction program should be that students are able to communicate fluently. In this sense, oral production and practice in the foreign language (L2) plays an essential role in the EFL classroom. However, most traditional classroom interaction patterns tend to follow paradigms in which the teacher is the center of attention, in charge of providing L2 input and grammar explanations, consequently leaving considerably little space for students to practice their English within the class session. Even though some traditional authors suggest that the role of Teacher Talking Time (TTT) is crucial -as it provides students with input- this research paper aims towards raising awareness that Student Talking Time (STT) plays an even greater role in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) than the one played by TTT. This paper analyzes the issue, explains the roles of STT and TTT, suggests ratios favoring a higher amount of STT over TTT, and also tries to contribute to the field by suggesting a simple and comprehensive proposal: a set of specialized activities aiming towards reducing TTT and fostering the amounts of STT that take place in the Chil...

It was never in author Joe Gilliland's plan to become a teacher, certainly not a college teacher and most certainly not an English teacher. But that's what happened, and he's never looked back. In A Teacher's Tale, he explains, how by neither planning for nor seeking a life of learning and teaching, lacking a syllabus or lesson plan, he discovered that a life in academe lay in his path-a path he's followed for more than fifty years. A Teacher's Tale begins in 1932 with Gilliland's first experiences in schooling and concludes in the summer of 1955 just as he completes his apprenticeship and stands on the brink of becoming a qualified instructor in a small college in east Texas. This memoir presents a collection of stories about his experiences as a teacher and a college student. A story of schooling deeply immersed in the arts and humanities, A Teacher's Tale shares Gilliland's love of the university and how it compelled him to seek a life devoted to teaching, primarily in the community college arena. Through this narrative, he brings together a philosophy of higher education based on the importance of arts and humanities in today's high- tech world.
