Justin Rose Drum Major Instinct. Martin Luther King Jr..s Theory of Political Service

Though there are several studies devoted to aspects of Martin Luther King Jr.'s intellectual thought, there has been no comprehensive study of his overarching theory of political service. In The Drum Major Instinct, Justin Rose draws on Martin Luther King Jr.'s sermons, political speeches, and writings to construct and conceptualize King's politics as a unified theory.Rose argues that King's theoretical framework--as seen throughout his wide body of writings--has three central components. First, King posited that all of humanity is tied to an "inescapable network of mutuality" such that no member of society can fully flourish if there are structural barriers preventing others from flourishing. Second, King's theory required that Americans cultivate a sense of love and concern for their fellow members of society, which would motivate them to work collectively toward transforming others and structures of injustice. Finally, King contended that all members of society have the responsibility to participate in collective forms of resistance. This meant that even the oppressed were obligated to engage in political service. Therefore, marginalized people's struggles against injustice were considered an essential aspect of service.Taken together, King's theory of political service calls on all Americans, but especially black Americans, to engage in other-centered, collective action aimed at transforming themselves, others, and structures of injusti...

This autoethnographic study examines my experiences as an African American born and raised in the United States of America, who-from the time I realized I was Black at age ten until the present day, more than fifty years later-experiences racism either overtly or covertly on a daily basis. I first explore my days as a high school student involved in a court desegregation case and the trauma I experienced in the hostile environment where White students openly showed their racial hatred for the Black students who would dare to enroll in "their school." I examine my life as a college student in Alabama at the height of the Civil Rights Movement and my participation in nonviolent protests, especially the famous Selma to Montgomery march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The history of the United States has been characterized by fervent idealism, intense struggle, and radical change. And for every critical, defining moment in American history, there were those whose impassioned voices rang out, clear and true, and whose words compelled the minds and hearts of all who heard them. When Patrick Henry declared, «Give me liberty, or give me death!», when Martin Luther King Jr. said, «I have a dream», Americans listened and were profoundly affected. These speeches stand today as testaments to this great nation made up of individuals with bold ideas and unshakeable convictions. The American Heritage Book of Great American Speeches for Young People includes over 100 speeches by founding fathers, patriots, Native American and African American leaders, abolitionists, women's suffrage and labor activists, writers, athletes, and others from all walks of life, featuring inspiring and unforgettable speeches by such notable speakers as: Patrick Henry * Thomas Jefferson * Tecumseh * Frederick Douglass * Sojourner Truth * Abraham Lincoln * Susan B. J.G. Remington The Letter, A Letter To A Family Member During The 2016 Political Season

""The Letter"" was written during the 2016-2017 Political Season, and was originally designed to explain complex societal issues to a family member who planned to vote for the first time. After the election, the personally designed letter was turned into a book format in order to share historical and political information with American readers who wish to learn more about this great nation we call home. Post election writings, originally presented as online blogs, such as: ""I'm Waiting,"" ""Isn't It Ironic,"" and ""The Irony of It All"" were added to further explain some of the complex issues currently facing the nation. Finally, ""A Call To Action,"" was added to share historical information about activists, such as Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. who greatly influenced the world with their peaceful protest movements. The final writing also presents readers with ideas designed to effectively impact situations in the modern world.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Amerika, Note: 2,0, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „I have a dream that one day, [...] right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today!"

Неустановленный автор Philosophische Wurzeln des Gewaltlosen Widerstands.

Неустановленный автор Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Differences and the Role of the Media

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, , course: The 1960s, language: English, abstract: Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. are two of the most important leaders in the black freedom movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Their contributions are highly valued until today, although people's opinions on the two leaders vary: some support the one and disapprove of the other. Furthermore, during their lifetime and even after their death, both were perceived as having followed two different ideologies. Their differing opinions on violence and non-violence, integration and separatism were regarded as preventing the two from moving closer to each other. Therefore, people regarded and portrayed them as adversaries since their images arouse controversial feelings, admiration and disapproval, among black and white people. On the bright side, Martin Luther King, Jr. the well-educated, peaceful promoter of love and hope in contradistinction to Malcolm X, on the dark side, the autodidact, radical Black Muslim extremist. Apparently this seemed to be the two poles in public imagination which the American mass media had contributed to. Where might these diferences come from, are they justified and what impact did the media play in the process of creating these public images? In order to adress these questions, this work is going to examine the two men's life, thought, and work in more detail.

John S. Lupold, Thomas L. French Jr. Bridging Deep South Rivers. The Life and Legend of Horace King

Horace King (1807-1885) built covered bridges over every large river in Georgia, Alabama, and eastern Mississippi. That King, who began life as a slave in Cheraw, South Carolina, received no formal training makes his story all the more remarkable. This is the first major biography of the gifted architect and engineer who used his skills to transcend the limits of slavery and segregation and become a successful entrepreneur and builder.John S. Lupold and Thomas L. French Jr. add considerably to our knowledge of a man whose accomplishments demand wider recognition. As a slave and then as a freedman, King built bridges, courthouses, warehouses, factories, and houses in the three-state area. The authors separate legend from facts as they carefully document King's life in the Chattahoochee Valley on the Georgia-Alabama border. We learn about King's freedom from slavery in 1846, his reluctant support of the Confederacy, and his two terms in Alabama's Reconstruction legislature. In addition, the biography reveals King's relationship with his fellow (white) contractors and investors, especially John Godwin, his master and business partner, and Robert Jemison Jr., the Alabama entrepreneur and legislator who helped secure King's freedom. The story does not end with Horace, however, because he passed his skills on to his three sons, who also became prominent builders and businessmen. In King's world few other blacks had his opportunities to excel. King seized on h...

Luther on Leadership

As a leader, Martin Luther shook the world. Yet, oddly enough, while a great deal has been written about his life, theology, and legacy, few authors have taken the time to examine his leadership characteristics. Luther on Leadership fills this gap by examining his life in light of modern leadership theories. This book looks at Luther's life from a variety of angles to show why he was such an effective leader. With chapters focusing on Luther as a change agent, transformational leader, adaptive leader, and more, this work will help the reader understand why Luther transformed the landscape of Europe. Examining not only his theological contributions, but also his contributions in fields such as law, politics, economics, and education, Luther on Leadership aims to give a holistic picture of Luther as a leader in many areas of society.""Who knew a sixteenth century monk was still so relevant today! While much has been written over the centuries about Luther as a reformer and theologian, Luther on Leadership unlocks key lessons for today's leaders. Looking through a twenty-first century lens at Luther's leadership style will better your knowledge of one of the world's greatest change agents as well as enable you to see the change you can bring in your organization.""--Brent Taylor, Author of Founding Leadership: Lessons on Business and Personal Leadership from the Men Who Brought You the American RevolutionDavid D. Disinformation and flawed knowledge about the afterlife has led to confusion, fear, and even denial about death and our inevitable transition from the physical world. The teachings of Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, bring clarity and understanding of our original nature as physical and spiritual beings who will naturally shed our physical bodies and continue to live in the spirit world. It makes eminent sense to know how to prepare for this transition to the world we will live in for eternity. As Martin Luther King, Jr., said: "Death is an open door which leads man into life eternal." PREPARING FOR THE AFTERLIFE provides a clear and detailed explanation about the inevitable transition to the eternal hereafter.

Ofield Dukes Ofield. The Autobiography of Public Relations Man Ofield Dukes

Ofield Dukes is considered one of the nation’s most successful African-American public relations practitioners and one of the most influential people of the Civil Rights period. This book—written by Dukes himself—takes the reader from Depression-era Detroit through the Korean War and up to Washington, D.C., where he served not only the Johnson White House, but every Democratic presidential candidate in the Sixties. Along the way he advised such notables as Coretta Scott King, author Alex Haley, Rep. Charles Rangel, as well as Martin Luther King, Jr. In fact, Dukes was instrumental in making King’s birthday a national holiday. Duke’s career was not limited to politicians and Civil Rights leaders. As a public relations counselor he worked with Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and dozens of other Motown stars. And thanks in large part to Dukes, the “Motown Sound” spread feverishly from its Detroit-based operations to every corner of the U.S. Today, there are hundreds of public relations practitioners around the world who credit Dukes for their success, including the editors of this book, two of Duke’s closest mentees. This book is dedicated to future generations of students and professionals in the hope that they, too, can be inspired by Ofield Dukes.

Todd Hobart Martin Luther as Youth Worker

Martin Luther is one of the most studied theologians in the history of the Christian church, so it is difficult to find areas that have been neglected when it comes to this great reformer. However, Luther's work with children and youth gets short shrift when compared to many other achievements. Martin Luther as a Youth Worker considers the reformer from this little-studied aspect of his work. Luther's practical care for children and youth, his educational reforms, his work in faith formation, and his view of human reason are considered. Last, the question is asked what it means to be a reformer with children and youth today. How can we live into Luther's reforming spirit in a way that addresses the needs of our current context?""Hobart provides us with a fresh and engaging examination of Luther's commitment to children and youth, making this both accessible and relevant for youth ministry today. He bridges well the realities of sixteenth-century Germany with today's complex and changing world in providing practical ways to appropriate Luther's theology, commitment, and practices to this ever important ministry of the church.""--Craig Van Gelder, Emeritus Professor of Congregational Mission, Luther Seminary""Todd Hobart's keen mind was able to retrieve from Luther's teachings and practice a refreshing approach to what it means to both care for and form children. Hobart's ability to tease out the importance of play in ...

Henry II conquered the largest empire of any English medieval king. Yet it is the people around him we remember: his wife Eleanor, whom he seduced from the French king; his son Richard the Lionheart; Thomas Becket, murdered in his cathedral. Who was this great, yet tragic king? For fans of Dan Jones, George RR Martin and Bernard Cornwell. The only thing that could have stopped Henry was himself.Henry II had all the gifts of the gods. He was charismatic, clever, learned, empathetic, a brilliant tactician, with great physical strength and an astonishing self-belief. Henry was the creator of the Plantagenet dynasty of kings, who ruled through eight generations in command of vast lands in Britain and Europe. Virtually unbeaten in battle, and engaged in a ceaseless round of conquest and diplomacy, Henry forged an empire that matched Charlemagne’s.It was not just on the battlefield that Henry excelled; he presided over a blossoming of culture and learning termed ‘the twelfth century Renaissance’, pursued the tenets of reason over religious faith, and did more to advance the cause of justice and enforce the rule of law than any other English monarch before or since. Contemporaries lauded his greatness and described him as their ‘Alexander of the West’.And yet it is the people around him who are remembered: his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom he seduced away from the French king; his sons Richard the Lionheart and John; Thomas Becket, murdered in his cathedral. Henry – so famed during his lifetime – has slipped into the shadows of history. King of the North Wind offers a fresh evaluation of this great yet tragic ruler.Written as a historical tragedy, it tells how this most talented of kings came into conflict with those closest to him, to become the most haunted.

Alpha Phi Alpha. A Legacy of Greatness, the Demands of Transcendence

On December 4, 1906, on Cornell University’s campus, seven black men founded one of the greatest and most enduring organizations in American history. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has brought together and shaped such esteemed men as Martin Luther King Jr., Cornel West, Thurgood Marshall, Wes Moore, W. E. B. DuBois, Roland Martin, and Paul Robeson. “Born in the shadow of slavery and on the lap of disenfranchisement,” Alpha Phi Alpha—like other black Greek-letter organizations—was founded to instill a spirit of high academic achievement and intellectualism, foster meaningful and lifelong ties, and racially uplift those brothers who would be initiated into its ranks. In Alpha Phi Alpha, Gregory S. Parks, Stefan M. Bradley, and other contributing authors analyze the fraternity and its members’ fidelity to the founding precepts set forth in 1906. They discuss the identity established by the fraternity at its inception, the challenges of protecting the image and brand, and how the organization can identify and train future Alpha men to uphold the standards of an outstanding African American fraternity. Drawing on organizational identity theory and a diverse array of methodologies, the authors raise and answer questions that are relevant not only to Alpha Phi Alpha but to all black Greek-letter organizations.
