Failure of ductile materials such as structural steel is associated with large amount of plastic deformation. Ductile fracture is characterized by three sequential processes; void nucleation, void growth, and void coalescence. Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) has emerged as attractive approach for predicting nucleation and growth of cracks in ductile materials. However, comprehensive satisfactory CDM model, which can describe the different physical stages of ductile fracture, has not been formulated yet. In addition, coalescence stage has received less attention compared to void nucleation and growth. In this book, elasto-plastic damage softening models are formulated (unified) into one complete damage softening model. Numerical simulation using LS-DYNA explicit solver carried out utilizing user defined material (UMAT). Return mapping algorithm used as the main numerical tool in updating stress in the plastic regime. Validity of this work is examined by comparison with experimental data for available crack path. Finally, evaluation of J-integral for the damage softening models has been accomplished for the purpose of establishing link between Fracture Mechanics & Damage Mechanics.

A multi-layered p-3D approach to design is proposed integrating Unified Fracture Design (UFD), fracture propagation models and Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) relationship to generate optimized fracture geometry, including fracture height, width and half-length to achieve the maximized production. Containment layers are discretized to allow for plausible fracture heights when seeking convergence of fracture height and net pressure. Other than the physical fracture geometry optimization, thus maximizing production, another obvious application of this research is to prevent the fracture from propagating into the unintended layers (i.e. gas cap and aquifer). Therefore, this study can guide fracture design job by pointing out: (1) what treating pressure is needed to achieve the optimum fracture geometry; (2) at which containment layers of the multi-layers will the vertical fracture propagation stop, given the above treating pressure; (3) the layer discretization will allow an approximate location of the fracture top and bottom tips which is sufficient for the purposes of this design.

This book deals with fracture mechanics of magneto – electro – thermo – elastic materials (multifield materials). Crystal structure plays an important role in determining chemical and mechanical properties of polymers.Elucidating the crystal structure of polymers is extremely difficult particularly in obtaining a sizeable crystal for XRD analysis.This work prove the viability of computer modelling approach interfaced with simulated XRD diffraction. High-performance aromatic polymers based on the 4,4''-biphenylene, 1,3-phenylene,isophthaloyl bis(4,4''-biphenylene) and p-terphenyl units were synthesized and their crystal structures investigated. The polymers show extreme thermal stability and are insoluble in almost all organic solvents.Oligomer and polymer crystal structures were constructed using computational modelling and quantitatively compared with simulated diffraction via Rietveld Analysis. Molecular mechanics force-fields were optimised from conformational and crystal packing data determined from oligomeric analogues by X-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction methods.

This monograph presents a new strain based probabilistic fracture mechanics approach for large plastic deformation analysis of through wall cracked pipes subject to an external bending load in combination with internal pressure (bi-axial loading). Strain-based fracture mechanics equations, including the effects of bi-axial loading have been presented to study the behavior of through wall cracked pipes.High Dimensional Model Representation concepts are explored to approximate the original implicit limit state/performance function in terms of crack length, internal pressure and material hardening. Subsequently the failure probability is obtained by performing Monte Carlo simulation.In addition, studies on off-center through wall cracked pipes have been carried out, to observe the effect of off-center angle on fracture response and failure probability.The study well emphasized the capacity of the off-centered cracked pipes in comparison with the symmetrically centered cracked pipe.Finally, an alternate procedure for J-estimation is proposed using reference strain formulations for assessing the fracture response of the through wall cracked pipes subjected to bi-axial loading.

Accurate analysis of fracture is of vital importance yet methods for effective 3D calculations are currently unsatisfactory. Although the crack branching (bifurcation) is usually considered as a dynamic process, a quasi-static analysis of the crack branching mechanism is proposed by using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concepts of stress intensity factors (SIFs) and a modified higher order displacement discontinuity method. Based on these concepts, it has been concluded that the secondary cracks may start their propagation and causing crack branching phenomenon at the kink points. In this approach, a semi-analytical higher order displacement discontinuity method is sophisticated with the higher order displacement discontinuity formulations near the kink points and the cracks are traversing and discretizing in counterclockwise directions. Each kink point is considered as two overlapped crack tips and the mixed mode stress intensity factors near the kink (for both left and right sides of the kink) are computed.

In this book, a systematic study of laser irradiation effects in polymers and crystals is presented. Several microstructures, craters, diffraction gratings, waveguides and Y couplers were fabricated in polymers and Lithium Niobate crystal using fs laser direct writing technique. Four different polymers PMMA, PDMS, PS, and PVA were investigated in the study. The formation of defects which are responsible for the observation of emission in polymers is explained in the context of formation of myriad optical centers. The change in emission peak with excitation wavelength is observed in polymers and explained through "Red edge effect". The observation of ESR signal in fs laser irradiated polymers is interpreted due to the formation of paramagnetic centers. Broadening and suppression of Raman modes in case of irradiated polymers indicated the presence of defects in polymers. Fs laser irradiation on Lithium Niobate crystal has not shown formation any optical or paramagnetic centers. Also the synthesis of silver nanoparticles through laser irradiation (ns,ps, and fs) in PVA matrix is presented in this study. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of silver nanoparticles are reported.

Antimicrobial polymers are materials that have biocidal effect where they can render harmless or exert a controlling effect on any harmful microorganisms such as Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria or fungi. In the last few decades, there is a demand for the antimicrobial polymers to solve the problems accompany with the use of conventional antimicrobial agents such as toxicity. In our study, we aim to prepare and develop some new antimicrobial polymers for biomedical applications and water treatment. The antimicrobial polymers were prepared based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PEMA). These polymers were then modified in which, functional groups were created onto both polymers via amination using different types of diamines to yield amine-terminated polymers. Antimicrobial polymers were obtained by immobilization of benzaldehyde and its derivatives which include, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde onto amine terminated polymers. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared polymers against different types of microorganisms were explored by the cut plug method and viable cell counting methods.

Research is ongoing to find non-toxic and inexpensive biological drugs which promote fracture healing and to completely understand the cascade of fracture healing. The possibility of using amino acids like Arginine and Lysine in situations that require more rapid bone healing such as fracture treatment , osteointegration after the application of implants,biomaterials and prosthesis (used in joint replacement surgery) has been hypothesized by virtue of angiogenesis and collagen synthesis properties of these molecules. The work is focused on the study of damage and fracture mechanics with emphasis to composite materials which are widely employed in the aerospace industry. For this purpose, a cohesive-frictional model for the prediction of interlaminar damage and a non-local constitutive model for intralaminar progressive damage simulation in composite laminated structures were defined. The proposed constitutive models were developed for commercial finite element software ABAQUS by means of user-defined material subroutine written in FORTRAN. To verify the effectiveness of the implemented models numerical simulations were conducted and validated by experimental results available from literature.
