Praise for First-Generation College Students «Who students are when they start college does not dictate how much they can benefit, provided they take advantage of the myriad learning opportunities institutions offer. This book is replete with informative insights into the invisible minority we call 'first-gen students' as well as the policies, programs, and practices institutions should use to help them succeed.» —George D. Kuh, Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education Emeritus, Indiana University «Unnoticed and often poorly understood, first-generation college students now comprise nearly fifty percent of students on many college campuses. In this book Ward, Siegel, and Davenport offer great insights and practical suggestions on how higher education leaders can create a more welcoming, supportive, and inclusive experience for these students to succeed.» —Jeffrey R. Docking, president, Adrian College «Critical to our survival in a global economy is the selection, development, retention and graduation of creative college students. First-Generation College Students is both timely and essential for those interested in understanding the next generation preparing for college and the ways in which institutions might anticipate, and therefore avoid, habits that invite failure instead of graduation. The authors' work experiences, coupled with their cited research base, situate them uniquely to contribute intentional survival strategies to the sometimes unanticipated realities of today's college students.» —Zach Kelehear, associate dean for Academic Affairs and professor, College of Education, University of South Carolina «Long overdue, this book provides a comprehensive perspective of the unique issues facing first-generation students as they transition in and out of college. It is an important contribution to higher education during a time when faculty, staff, and administrators face heightened pressures to retain and graduate all students in a timely fashion.» —Cynthia Wolf Johnson, associate provost, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Universities like any other institutions are supposed to be safe and secure to students. Yet, female students are unfairly victims of harassment and hence are compelled to live and learn in a context where their success and even existence is highly compromised. As a result, many are challenged to actively participate in class, play a part in clubs, use different facilities in the campus, study and achieve their goal. Hence, apart from their effort and obligation to study, female students would be compelled to handle and survive from the influences of sexual harassment. In spite of that, little is known about these various coping mechanisms students in universities actually use to handle sexual harassment. This book, therefore, examines how female students of Addis Ababa University respond to sexual harassment by male perpetrators. The work helps universities and other concerned institutions to design appropriate interventions that take into account response strategies of female students. It is especially helpful to professionals in social work, gender and education fields, or anyone else who may be interested in addressing sexual harassment in higher institutions.

Soil erosion has been one of the major problems undermining agricultural production in Ethiopia. Consequently, efforts are being made by the government to tackle the adverse effect of soil erosion via Food-for-Work and Cash-for-Work programs. However, the existing literature shows that the achievements of such programs are far from the expectations. Does such an experience mean that there is no hope for soil conservation practices in Ethiopia? Absolutely it is doubtful, the problem could have been rather, the campaigns that have been undertaken in Ethiopia for soil conservation practices have failed to consider local peoples' willingness to pay for such projects from the very initiation of conservation measures. This motivates that, adequate understanding of the socio economic circumstances is required to determine the household's soil conservation demand behavior and the factors that determine their willingness to pay for it. Hence, this book explores the value that the rural households have attached to soil conservation measure using the non marketed valuation technique called Contingent valuation method.

How to nurture creativity in tomorrow’s innovators—today’s college students When asked what they want colleges to emphasize most, employers didn’t put science, computing, math, or business management first. According to AAC&U’s 2013 employer survey, 95% of employers give hiring preference to college graduates with skills that will enable them to contribute to innovation in the workplace. In Engaging Imagination: Helping Students Become Creative and Reflective Thinkers, two leading educators help college instructors across disciplines engage students in nurturing creativity and innovation for success beyond the classroom. Alison James, an expert in creative arts education, and Stephen D. Brookfield, bestselling author, outline how creative exploration can extend students’ reflective capabilities in a purposeful way, help them understand their own potential and learning more clearly, and imbue students with the freedom to generate and explore new questions. This book: shows why building creative skills pays dividends in the classroom and in students’ professional lives long after graduation; offers research-based, classroom-tested approaches to cultivating creativity and innovation in the college setting; provides practical tools for incorporating “play” into the college curriculum; draws on recent advances in the corporate sector where creative approaches have been adopted to reinvigorate thinking and problem-solving processes; and includes examples from a variety of disciplines and settings. Through the analysis of qualitative data, this interpretative phenomenological study investigated the lived experiences of community college students to gain an understanding of how they perceived their participation in leadership training. The research draws on the data gathered from in-depth interviews with three community college students attending a public institution in the northeastern United States. Utilizing student development theory as a theoretical framework, this study provided rich descriptions of the participants’ experiences following leadership training and the sense they constructed from their experiences. The emergent themes produced by this study included (1) sense of belonging and positive relationships, (2) increased selfconfidence, (3) increased self-awareness and self-monitoring, (4) understanding of personal identity, and (5) willingness to take initiative. This study served as a step to further understand the community college demographic participating in leadership training as there is an inherent lack of empirical literature in this realm.

Forest represents an important resource base for economic development. If managed wisely, forest had the capacity to provide a perpetual stream of income and subsistence products, while supporting other economic activities through its ecological services and functions. Despite the importance of forest in sustaining livelihood and poverty smoothening in rural communities, it is highly depleted. Besides, rehabilitation initiatives in Ethiopia to date are rarely participatory. Even, community forests are poorly conserved and highly degraded. Therefore, to enhance participatory rehabilitation initiatives for sustainable management, this study examined households' willingness to pay for rehabilitation of degraded forest resources in a hypothetical market. The study was conducted in Sekella woreda of the Amhara region, northwestern Ethiopia. A total of 120 households had been surveyed in the study area in November and December 2011. During the survey, Contingent Valuation Method with double bounded dichotomous choice with follow up question format was applied to elicit willingness to pay of rehabilitation of degraded forest resources.

Admissions and financial aid policies at liberal arts colleges have changed dramatically since 1955. Through the 1950s, most colleges in the United States enrolled fewer than 1000 students, nearly all of whom were white. Few colleges were truly selective in their admissions; they accepted most students who applied. In the 1960s, as the children of the baby boom reached college age and both federal and institutional financial aid programs expanded, many more students began to apply to college. For the first time, liberal arts colleges were faced with an abundance of applicants, which raised new questions. What criteria would they use to select students? How would they award financial aid? The answers to these questions were shaped by financial and educational considerations as well as by the struggles for civil rights and gender equality that swept across the nation. The colleges' answers also proved crucial to their futures, as the years since the mid-1970s have shown. When the influx of baby boom students slowed, colleges began to recruit aggressively in order to maintain their class sizes. In the past decade, financial aid has become another tool that colleges use to compete for the best students.By tracing the development of competitive admission and financial aid policies at a selected group of liberal arts colleges, Crafting a Class explores how institutional decisions reflect and respond to broad demographic, economic, political, and social forces. Role models offer adolescents a framework to determine their values, attitudes, and behavior. This study examines high school students’ use of various media outlets in obtaining information about their role models, how they incorporate that information into their daily lives, and how that aids in identity development. In particular, this project focuses on selective media exposure to role models by young female athletes (soccer players) and non-athletes (musicians) compared to that of young male athletes (soccer players) and non-athletes (musicians). The primary group of interest is adolescent female soccer players. The dependent measures include: 1) media use patterns by athletes and non-athletes; 2) role model selection during and after the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; and 3) athletic and musical participation levels during and after the Olympics.

Although greater numbers of students are enrolling in college today than they were twenty years ago, the rates of college enrollment for African American and Latino students remain considerably lower than those of White and Asian (Martinez and Kloppott, 2005). Reports show that students from historically under-served groups-Black and Hispanic-slightly have only a 50 % chance of graduating from high school. Of these 50 %, only 16 % are considered college ready (WestEd, 2005). The primary problem that prompted this study is the need to determine to what extent the Early College High School Initiatives are effective in preparing students for college.

Stupid Schools, Stupid Students: Get Smart is full of examples of the horrible, yet laughable writing submitted by college students in college level English classes. Along with the decidedly non- academic work, the author builds a case against the ever increasing dependence on standardized tests in public schools across the U.S. The examples herein show the results of blind reliance on these tests that are supposed to raise academic standards and hold students, teachers and schools accountable for academic improvement. While most educators complain about the negative aspects of high-stakes testing there have only been a few, mostly unsuccessful, attempts to change course. Providing some background on the public education system in America and offering ideas about how to develop a higher standard of academics, the author demonstrates that standardized tests fail to teach students to think.

AUTHORS: Vershawn Ashanti Young, Rusty Barrett, Y’Shanda Young-Rivera, and Kim Brian Lovejoy. SERIES: Working and Writing for Change edited by Steve Parks. With a new Foreword by April Baker-Bell and a new Preface by Vershawn Ashanti Young and Y’Shanda Young-Rivera, Other People’s English: Code-Meshing, Code-Switching, and African American Literacy presents an empirically grounded argument for a new approach to teaching writing to diverse students in the English language arts classroom. Responding to advocates of the “code-switching” approach, four uniquely qualified authors make the case for “code-meshing”—allowing students to use standard English, African American English, and other Englishes in formal academic writing and classroom discussions. This practical resource translates theory into a concrete road map for pre- and inservice teachers who wish to use code-meshing in the classroom to extend students’ abilities as writers and thinkers and to foster inclusiveness and creativity. The text provides activities and examples from middle and high school as well as college and addresses the question of how to advocate for code-meshing with skeptical administrators, parents, and students. Other People’s English provides a rationale for the social and educational value of code-meshing, including answers to frequently asked questions about language variation. It also includes teaching tips and action plans for professional development workshops that address cultural prejudices.

If you are preparing to apply to colleges and universities in the United States-you need this book!College is one of the most expensive investment students will make. Therefore, helping students find "the right college" for them not only makes for happy students, but helps parents feel more confident about the result. College is not only a big decision that students have to make, but it is also the foundation of their future success.Students and parents are discovering that schools that a few years ago were considered second- and even third-tier schools have elevated their standards significantly. With substantially more students applying, and in some cases fewer spots available, for the select colleges across the country, schools are demanding higher grades and have higher test score criteria, which seemingly place college out of reach. The applicant pool changes annually, thus nothing is carved in stone as to which students are accepted and which are not. However, the best chance of getting in to the school of your choice is to display your passion as to where you are headed in life, starting in 9th grade.High school seniors and college transfer students know how difficult it is to get into the top-tier colleges today. Creating a persuasive, eye-catching application requires creativity, foresight, and a marketable presentation as to what you can offer that will attract schools. With the advent of broadband and mobile access to the Internet giving young people access to the Internet any place and at any time and thus 24/7 entertainment, interaction and communication there is a real risk that children can become so immersed in their online world that it can seem to take over their lives. It is easy to see why some children and young people love spending many hours pursuing their interests playing games finding information and communicating with friends online. However, when this use becomes obsessive and at the expense of other aspects of a young person's life the Internet could be problematic and could even be classified as Internet addiction. The present study was conducted on 80 college and school students to verify the hypothesis that there will be significant differences among the students of high school & undergraduate in terms of their internet addiction. The findings indicated that college students are more addicted than school students. The findings would stimulate other researchers to take up such problems for further investigation. It would facilitate the counselors & the clinical psychologists to peep into the personality of college students.

The phrase "ring by spring" is used to describe students' desire to find a partner and become engaged before they graduate college. From where does this pressure come? Who is most impacted? What are the consequences of this culture? This book begins to explore this complicated dynamic that is unique to Christian colleges by describing the experiences of Christian college students and alumni. The author provides additional thoughts on how to support students overwhelmed by this culture, and how to foster positive relationships of all kinds on college campuses that too often make romantic relationships too serious too quickly.
