This book presents the design, testbed implementation and evaluation of XOR-Top, a protocol that uses local topology information for network coding for unicast transmission in wireless mesh networks. One of the main constraints in a wireless mesh network is limited bandwidth. Network coding has shown great potential to improve the overall throughput of wireless networks with broadcast nature. In this book, we have harnessed the benefits of network coding to improve the network throughput of a wireless mesh network which uses a omnidirectional broadcast. In this work, we implement and evaluate a new encoding strategy, XOR-Top, which relies on local topology information, and uses bitwise XOR for packet coding. In essence, we can say that in this book we have studied local topology assisted network coding, designed a new protocol (XOR-Top), verified the correctness of the new coding schemes by simulation as well as experimental testbed and completed the performance analysis of data collected by simulation and experiments.

Are all Wireless LANs equal? A network administrator is faced with a plethora of wireless services, complex radio issues, and products for wireless data. There are brand new protocols and products that could become obsolete a day after installation! Over 40% of all deployed WLANs do not even have minimum security activated, exposing the company's network and records to easy outsider access.The WLAN industry is characterized by rapidly changing, incomplete or proprietary standards, which can impact interoperability goals.There are complicated ownership costs, performance limitations, and security configurations that exist for WLANs which many network administrators may not understand or know how to compare. This dissertation presents a decision support system (DSS) that enables a novice network administrator to compare WLAN protocol capabilities, rank security configurations, rate IT cost efforts and use an extensive feature list.An in-depth discussion, concerning WLAN protocols, virtual private networks (VPNs), various encryption algorithms, 802.1X authentication mechanisms, and compilation of network selection criteria provides the foundation to construct a small DSS to aid WLAN network administrators.The DSS environment allows a number of specific what-if scenarios to be reviewed and compared; multiple solutions can be tried without having to deal with the consequences. Alternative technologies are listed by the DSS to educate the decision maker about other options.

In any networking environment, security, connection time and scalability of the network are the major concerns to keep network safe, faster and stable. Administrators working within the networking environment need to have complete account of manageability, scalability and security of the network, so that the organizational data can be kept confidential and maintain integrity. There are different authentication methods used by network administrators for accessing network in wired and wireless environments. As network usage and attacks on network increases, a secure, scalable and standard network protocol is needed for accessing and to keep data safe in both wired and wireless networks. IEEE 802.1x is an IEEE standard used to provide authentication and authorization to the devices over LAN/WLAN. The framework IEEE 802.1x uses EAP for authentication and authorization with a RADIUS server. In this report, an experimental analysis for different EAP authentication methods in both wired and wireless networks in terms of authentication time and the total processing time is presented. Wireshark is used to capture the network traffic on server and client ends.

A Wireless Sensor Network is a collection of small devices with sensing, computation, and wireless communication capabilities. Energy consumption in these networks is directly proportional to the life time of the network. So, conservation of power during network operation becomes an important issue in WSNs.Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks has a strong effect on the network, which consumes a considerable amount of energy. To address this problem an Energy Aware Uniform Cluster-Head Distribution (EAUCD) technique, in which the cluster heads are uniformly distributed through out the network, which results in balancing the energy load in the network and increasing its life time is proposed here. The proposed EAUCD technique performs better in terms of conservation of power compared to the other cluster based routing protocol. The technique is validated through extensive simulation in various scenarios like increasing the area of simulation, increasing the number of nodes in the network, and changing the dispersion of nodes.
