Burden of Hope is the result of groundbreaking research that impacts the entire paradigm by which postsecondary education regards collegiate Black men - men repeatedly underserved by America’s colleges and universities. Typically, postsecondary education relates to collegiate Black males from a deficit mindset, which often translates into providing remedial resources designed to improve college transition, retention, and persistence. However, the major themes emerging from this study call for an alternative approach for academic achievement, specifically, one that empowers collegiate Black males from the beginning of their postsecondary transition by engaging their inherent power, need, and desire to succeed - by engaging their burden of hope.

This study seeks to investigate an interesting and understudied case of the persistence and retention of immigrant students in postsecondary education. Specifically, the study examines the way family dynamics of second-generation Cambodian college students influence their success in postsecondary education. Currently, much of the academic literature examining Southeast Asian Americans concentrates on other ethnic groups besides Cambodians, who are less numerous in education, and pays little attention to the unique convergence of family, cultural, and historical forces and conditions at play in these young adults’ educational experience in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to build on previous works that are similarly related to the issues at hand, and to develop a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the educational trajectory of these young people, with the ultimate hope of improving their educational experiences.

Missing from the discourse on spirituality are the injustices experienced in the workplace, particularly by individuals marginalized by social group identity or affiliation. This is a critical omission in that spirituality can stimulate reflection, response, healing, and transformation of the soul. Filling the gap by addressing the role of spirituality in relation to meaningful work, this volume extends ideas about teaching and learning about spirituality to workplace settings, including the transformative learning theory. In seeking ways to promote moral and socially responsible workplaces and to establish a new way of thinking, the volume lays down a philosophical framework for spirituality in the workplace as a means of emancipation and social justice, and shows how the workplace can be a fruitful context for social justice education. This is the 152nd volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program brings campus-enrolled and incarcerated students together as classmates in postsecondary courses built around dialogue, collaboration, and experiential learning. Contributors to this book consider the broader lessons that Inside-Out provides for community-based learning praxis, prison education and postsecondary teaching in general, both on campus and in community settings. An international network of practitioner-scholars probe the challenges and contradictions inherent in community-based work, but especially charged in the prison setting: the intersections of race, class and gender, and the tensions between teaching and activism, evaluation and advocacy, and compromise with and resistance to oppressive and dehumanizing systems. At a time when many in the Academy are seeking to deepen the impact of the community-based learning initiatives on their campuses, Turning Teaching Inside Out offers a model.

This book examines workplace learning in healthcare settings. Growing and sustaining a healthcare workforce is an area of concern for all those working in the health and education systems. Consequently, understanding the workplace and the learning that takes place within it is fundamental to ongoing workforce strategy and planning. Through case study research this study examines systematically the experience of learners in healthcare settings over a two-year period while on a health studies programme. The findings suggest that the learning environment in these healthcare settings are unpredictable and the learning experience is open to a set of random interconnected variables. With these intrinsically linked variables a model of workplace learning has been proposed and provides a useful way of understanding the complexities that exist in the learning environment, how they interact and the impact they may have on workplace learning.

Improving college access and success among Black males has garnered tremendous attention. Many social scientists have noted that Black men account for only 4.3% of the total enrollment at 4-year postsecondary institutions in the United States, the same percentage now as in 1976. Furthermore, two thirds of Black men who start college never finish. The lack of progress among Black men in higher education has caused researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to become increasingly focused on ways to increase their access and success. Offering recommendations and strategies to help advance success among Black males, this monograph provides a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of factors that promote the access, retention, and persistence of Black men at diverse institutional types (e.g., historically Black colleges and universities, predominantly White institutions, and community colleges). It delineates institutional policies, programs, practices, and other factors that encourage the success of Black men in postsecondary education. This is the 3rd issue of the 40th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Quality education is the process and system of education for all around development. Quality education is not absolute. It is relative in respect of space and time. Education being a man-making process, the most important aspect of education to process developments oriented man, equipped with necessary knowledge, skill and aptitude to lead a healthy productive and useful life in the society. Education must inflate in man and woman a scientific attitude and initiation, resourcefulness and amiable temperament. Obviously two priorities emerge out in the present educational situation in India-which are (1) Liquidation of illiteracy through (A) Universalization of Primary Education and (B) Rapid and intensive Expansion of Adult-Education and (II) Reorientation and Reconstruction of secondary and Higher Education. Measurement in content analysis is of three types, classification (or categorization). Direction and counting (quantification). The first two were discussed in earlier chapter, counting also deserves a chapter of its own, for counting provides the data for statistical manipulation, for tables (in various classifications).

Black students in the United States continue to struggle academically as they matriculate into postsecondary education, placing them at risk for missing opportunities for work and social success. Research has identified the dimensions of Black racial identity, as well as other social factors, that may contribute to academic success. What is missing, however, is research grounded in a theory of Black identity that examines how identity and other factors combine to influence academic success. This quantitative online survey research tested 5 hypotheses to ascertain their relative strength in predicting academic success among Black college students. A sample of 87 Black American students (at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled as a matriculating student in postsecondary undergraduate education) completed four scales, and a demographics form that included overall GPA, as of most recently completed term. The results suggest that high school and college counselors and educators can gain insights into Black students by understanding racial identity, parents' education, and academic support.

Social media is central to postsecondary education. It is how students engage with the campus community, and campus leaders and practitioners are interested in how an institution can employ social media to impact instruction, student services and institutional effectiveness in an increasingly competitive market. This volume presents the current research and scholarship on social media that provides a view of the higher education landscape in this new digital age and it demonstrates how social media influence behavior and campus culture. Drawing on a critical synthesis and analysis from recent research on this rapidly evolving phenomenon, this monograph examines: some of the assumptions and presumptions around social media, how social media is used and how it shapes the student experience and student development, and best practices for enhancing curricular and co-curricular communities of practice. This is the 5th issue of the 42nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

This research explored the workplace experiences of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech pathologists in their first year of employment. Findings identified that this first year was characterized by intense learning, multiple work stressors, achievements, satisfaction, and for some, distress. Three transitions were experienced - adjustment to the workplace and work role, assimilation into the workplace and workforce, and future workforce plans. A supportive workplace environment had a strong positive effect on graduates’ integration into the workplace and an unsupportive workplace had a negative effect. A model of workplace integration of allied health graduates in the first year of employment was developed. The findings support the need for entry-level courses to better prepare students for the workplace realities of their professional work roles, including managing work stressors, and for employers of new health professionals to implement supportive management practices to obtain positive workplace and graduate outcomes, including quality client service provision.

This qualitative study investigates the subject of Clinical Communication and how it is taught, learned and practised in one London Medical School and Hospital. It is informed by theoretical perspectives from workplace learning. Teachers and medical students took part in a series of interviews and ward observations over a period of four months. Teachers were interviewed about their teaching practice, they were asked to observe students in the clinical workplace and finally were asked to reflect upon whether these observations had informed their teaching practice. Students were interviewed about how they had learned and subsequently practised clinical communication in the clinical workplace. Conceptually, this research shifts focus to the clinical workplace as the legitimate location for teaching and learning clinical communication and proposes a new and expanded way of understanding learning in this context.

What does it means to work toward racial equity in higher education in the 21st century? This monograph answers just that with a synthesis of theory, research, and evidence that illuminate the ways in which racism shapes higher education systems and the experiences of people who navigate them. Higher education leaders must move beyond vague notions of diversity and do the difficult work of pursuing systemic transformation and creating more inclusive environments in which racially diverse populations can thrive. Such work necessitates a deep understanding of the historic and contemporary role of racism in shaping postsecondary access and opportunity. This work will be of interest to those who recognize how advancing racial equity benefits all members of the campus community and larger society. This is the 1st issue of the 42nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Choosing a postsecondary institution is a major decision for students and their families. Along with academic, financial and geographic considerations, the issue of campus safety is a vital concern. In 1990, Congress enacted the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (Title II of Public Law 101-542), which amended the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). This act required all postsecondary institutions participating in HEA's Title IV student financial assistance programs to disclose campus crime statistics and security information. The act was amended in 1992, 1998, 2000 and 2008. The 1998 amendments renamed the law the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act in memory of a student who was slain in her dorm room in 1986. It is generally referred to as the Clery Act and is in section 485(f) of the HEA. On March 7, 2013, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (VAWA) (Public Law 113-14) was signed into law. VAWA includes amendments to the Clery...

School is one option for education; homeschooling is the second, and unschooling is the third. Many parents are frustrated by the school system, perhaps because of bullying, crowded classrooms, and outdated, dull, online courses. Disengaged learners that have no say in their coerced curriculum tend to act out, tune out, or drop out. Education must change and unschooling is the fastest-growing alternative method of learning. Two decades ago, students registered with their local school based on their house address. Now, with the internet, students are borderless. Learning can occur anywhere, anytime, anyway and from anyone—including self-taught. Self-directing their education, unschoolers learn through: Play Projects Reading Volunteering Video games Sports Mentorship Travel Life This book explores the path of 30 unschooled children who self-directed all or part of their education and were accepted by universities, colleges, and other postsecondary schools. Most have already graduated. What children need most are close relationships-parents, teachers, siblings, relatives, coaches, and mentors within a wider community, not just within an institutional school. Educational content is everywhere. Caring relationships are not. Families that embrace unschooling, do not have to choose between a quality education and a relaxed, connected family lifestyle. They can have both.

Knowledge of algebra is the critical gatekeeper for success in completing high school and postsecondary training. In the United States 22% of entering freshmen are under-prepared for college mathematics. Researchers have documented disconnects between secondary and postsecondary mathematics' expectations, but little is known about instructor perceptions of student learning in algebra classes. A researcher-developed survey was administered to a random sample of high school, community college, and university mathematics instructors to determine how well they believed students were mastering algebra content in high school and college algebra classes. Findings indicated there are differences in instructors' perceptions of algebra learning in high school and in credit-bearing college algebra classes. The book should help establish the importance of significant three-way dialogue between high school, community college, and university instructors in order to find ways to enable students to make successful transitions from high school to college mathematics, and should be of interest to secondary and postsecondary mathematics professionals.

Explore the multiple ways adults learn through their bodies. Embodied or somatic learning is a way of learning that relies on the body’s knowledge. Our most basic form of learning in childhood is preverbal; however, traditional schooling forces us to check our bodies at the door, requiring us to sit at a desk and raise our hands, focusing primarily on cognition to the exclusion of other ways of knowing. By the time we reach adulthood, “being in our bodies” is a foreign concept and a source of discomfort for many of us. This volume challenges the dominant paradigm of how knowledge is constructed and shared. Embodied learning is examined through a variety of practice contexts, including higher education, community education, health care, and the workplace, and through multiple methods, including dance, theater, and outdoor experiential education. This is 134th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.
