Hair, as a biological measurement matrix is a good index for heavy metal bio-accumulation as they are retained cumulatively over a long time as compared to the transient retention in similar indices like blood and urine. The research is therefore precipitated upon this premises.

Discharge of heavy metals in wastewater can be toxic to aquatic life and render natural waters as they become unsuitable for human consumption due to their tendency to accumulate in living organisms. These problem are good reasons to search an efficient economically cheap methods with easy technology to removal heavy from polluted water. The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions in this work herein is investigated by an adsorption of heavy metals on a local Libyan Soil called Ashkida soil mined in the Southern Province of Libya. The soil efficiency and removal capacity of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was experimentally investigated in a batch system. The experiments are performed in a batch system at room temperature. It is aimed to study the effects of some parameters of heavy metals adsorption capacity on the soil. A comparison of equilibrium isotherms and kinetic models applied to the adsorption of heavy metals ions on the adsorbent, and parameters were calculated. The adsorption process was physisorption and controlled by an endothermic reaction; however, an efficient heavy metals removal can be achieved at ambient temperature.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 76, , language: English, abstract: Rivers are the major sources of water being used in cities and its environs. This water may either be treated or untreated. River banks could be very busy, varied activities ranging from farming to industrial activities and other domestic household activities are conducted. The present study aimed at investigating the potential sources of selected heavy metal contaminants in River Mukurumudzi, Kwale County. Water and sediments were sampled in four points along the river impacted by mining, human settlements and agricultural activities for three different seasons. The samples were analyzed for Iron, Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic using an AAS. Sediment quality was also analysed by the calculation of CF and I-geo values. Interpretation of results was conducted using Minitab statistical software and Excel spreadsheets. The range of metals in water during the dry season was Fe (0.19-0.32) mg/l, Pb, Cu, Cd and As were below the detection limits. The range of metals in water during the short rain was Fe (0.12-1.25) mg/l and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in water during the long rain season was Fe (0.07-1.82) mg/l, Cu (0.08-0.11) mg/l and BDL for all the other analysed metals. Heavy metals cannot be smashed, but can only be altered from one state to another. On the basis of their solubility in physiological conditions, 17 heavy metals are obtainable for living cells and of significance for the organism and ecosystem. Among these metals, Fe, Mn and Mo are important as micronutrients; Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, V, W and Zn are noxious elements with high or low importance as trace elements. Most common heavy metals, namely, Cu, Cd and Zn create the major problem in contaminated soils that is completely different from organic pollutants. Unlike organic pollutants, these heavy metals cannot be biodegraded and therefore exist in the environment for extended periods of time. Our earth's crust is the ultimate source of all metallic elements present in the ecosystem. Globally there are 35 metals that concern us because of residential or occupational exposure; 23 of these are the heavy metals. In this study, the level of heavy metals pollution in poultry chicken (Gallus domesticus) at Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta were investigated during the year 2007-9. A total 200 random poultry organs (liver, brain and heart) of same aged groups of chickens were collected from poultry shops of 6 selected locations, and 4 heavy metals Cd, Ni, Cu and Pb were analyzed. Based on results that all chickens samples were contaminated with Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb). Copper has been recorded as highest level contamination as compared to three other metals Cd, Ni, and Pb. During the study on the basis of feeds samples analyzing, metals may be have been transferred via poultry feeds to poultry chickens. The research techniques and results are helpful for graduate and research students of Biological Sciences, Environmental Science and Poultry Science students.

The use of green technology such as phytoremediation is one the environmental friendly technique, in which plants and other microbes are used to reduce the level of metals contaminants in soil and lower its uptake towards plants tissues. Studies reported a number of cereal crops such as wheat and medicinal plants like alfalfa accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at higher concentrations. In the present study, we investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat and alfalfa plants with the increase of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in soil. After eight weeks of pot experiment, roots colonization, shoot and root biomass, growth, heavy metals contents and other biochemical parameters were assessed. The results indicated mycorrhizal inoculated (M) plants performed better at moderate Zn and Cd concentrations. In addition, higher phosphorus contents were observed in M treated plants as compared to NM plants. Results indicated that AMF inoculum exhibit different tolerance strategies to reduce metals toxicity in host plants. In this study, the concentrations of five heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe) were determined in raw water, sediments and in aquatic macrophytes from selected sites at the Barekese reservoir in Ghana between the periods of June 2011 and January 2012. The obtained results showed that the mean concentration ranges for lead (0.04-0.25 mg/L) and iron (0.49-0.89 mg/L) in the reservoir water exceeded the WHO guideline values of 0.01mg/L and 0.30mg/L respectively for drinking water. The reservoir water was thus concluded as unfit for drinking except after adequate treatment. Comparison of the levels of heavy metals in sediments with the Numerical Sediment Quality Guidelines values showed the sediments as heavily polluted with lead and copper at certain sites of the reservoir. Good information were also provided by analysis of whole plants and organs of passive aquatic macrophytes (Typha domingensis, Ceratophyllum demersum, Pistia stratiotes and Lemna paucicostata). Metals in the plant species were higher in roots than shoots. The mean heavy metal concentrations in all the water, sediments and macrophytes were observed in the sequence; Fe > Cu > Mn > Pb > Zn.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 72.00, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Agriculture and natural resources), course: Forest resources technology (land reclamation and rehabilitation), language: English, abstract: The levels of four different heavy metals Arsenic (As), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb) and Copper (Cu) were determined in orange samples (Citrus sinensis) cultivated near the Sansu tailings dam of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine. The concentrations of the four metals in the orange samples were analysed from twenty (20) orange samples. Ten samples were collected randomly from the tailings site and extra ten (10) samples were purchased as control from Akrokeri (outside the Obuasi Municipality). Atomic absorption spectrometer was used to determine the concentrations of these metals in the fruits. The average concentrations of the heavy metals (As, Zn, Cu, and Pb) in the orange samples from the tailings site were 4.81mg/kg, 1.52 mg/kg, 1.04 mg/kg, and 0.74 mg/kg respectively. The average concentrations of the heavy metals (As, Zn, Cu, and Pb) in the orange samples from the control were 0.43 mg/kg, 0.25 mg/kg, 0.32 mg/kg, and 0.15 mg/kg respectively. The WHO gives the maximum permissible level of As, Zn, Pb, and Cu as 0.5mg/kg, 0.4mg/kg, 0.4mg/kg, and 0.3mg/kg respectively. Based on these levels it was concluded that the orange grown at the tailings site is a health hazard for human consumption.

The work focuses on the investigation of single Co-implanted ZnO nanowires using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques with a nanometer resolution. The ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown on Si substrates using VLS mechanism. The synthesized ZnO NWs were doped with Co via an ion implantation process. For the first time, the combined use of these techniques allows us to study the dopant homogeneity, composition, short- and large-range structural order of single NWs. The nano-XRF results indicate the successful and homogeneous Co doping with the desired concentrations in the ZnO NWs by an ion implantation process. The nano-XAS and XRD data analyses provide new insights into the lattice distortions produced by the structural defect formation generated by the ion implantation process. These findings highlight the importance of the post-implantation thermal annealing to recover the structure of single ZnO NWs at the nanometer length scale. In general, the methodologies used in this work open new avenues for the application of synchrotron based multi-techniques for detailed study of single semiconductor NWs at the nanoscale.

Two kinds of treatments were used in the current Book, namely, biological and chemical treatments, to reduce the concentration of four heavy metals (Al, Ni, Zn, and Pb) in the sludge collected from the electronic industry. A biological treatment called vermicomposting technique was employed to expose four different ratios of sludge (20, 50, 80, and 100%) mixed with goat manure and rice straw as a composting material to the earthworm species Eisenia fetida for four weeks. For the chemical technique, the sludge was washed with a mixture of two reagents (Na2 EDTA and Na2S2O5) at different volumes of washing solution (2.5, 5, and 7.5 mL to 1 g of sludge). The best reduction of heavy metals occurred in 7.5 mL with a percentage reduction of 5%, 12%, 16%, and 24% per gram sludge for Al, Ni, Zn, and Pb, respectively. Based on the findings, the vermicomposting technique shows greater potential over the chemical washing technique in reducing heavy metal concentration in electronic sludge.

Accumulation of heavy metals in living organisms provides a handy reference for elaborating the nature and extent of chemical pollution in water bodies. Kabul River, the major source of drinking and irrigation water for millions of people in Afghanistan and Pakistan,is contaminated with heavy metals from variety of sources, which need to be checked, for safeguarding fish habitat and securing consumers health. A research study of Hazara University is presented here shows the load of heavy metals accumulation in body parts of common fishes. The fishes analysed for this purpose included Wallago attu, Aorichthys seenghala, Cyprinus carpio, Labeo dyocheilus and Ompok bimaculatous,caught from the Peshawar Valley section of Kabul River.It was observed that the bioaccumulation of Zn, Cr and Pb was very high in fishs as compared Cd and Pb. Furthermore the concentration of Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb in fish samples, were exceeding the RDA limits. It can be concluded that continuous use of these fishes may cause health problems of different kinds to fish consumers. The issue needs proper attention at national and local levels.

The microlithographic process, essential in the fabrication of microdevices, uses high-energy radiation to transfer a pattern onto a thin film of polymer resist. Pattern transfer occurs by modifying the properties (solubility or volatility) of the polymer film exposed to radiation. Poly(olefin sulfones) exhibit a high sensitivity to x-rays, which is a desirable property for polymer resists used in the microlithographic process. The potential utility of these new resins prompted a study of the mechanism of degradation promoted by x-ray radiation. In this study, the effect of x-ray radiation on polysulfones with varied chemical structures was analyzed using x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and in-situ mass spectroscopy (MS). Interesting differences in the mode of degradation of certain poly(olefin sulfones) was observed. The results provide important groundwork for further studies of polysulfones as x-ray resists.

It is in the light of the linearity between these two pyzsical quantities that prompted us to combine both spectroscopic analysis processes in one device. In this way it was posible to use the results obtain from x-ray reflectivity and work back to verify the results obtain from the surface plasmons resonance scans. This was realise for static s well as for dynamic processes within a thin film of polymer.

Phytoremediation is clean-up of pollutants with plant. Phytoremediation is most effective on sites containing a low level and widely dispersed contaminant over a large area in the upper surface of the soil. Phytoremediation can work with site restoration with minimum site disruption. Additionally, plant biomass can be harvested to remove contaminants from the site and trees without disturbing the site. To enhance phytoremediation as a viable strategy, fast growing plants with high metal uptake ability and rapid biomass gain are needed. Eucalyptus species (Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E.microtheca, E.occidentalis, E.sargentii, E.Largiflorens) can be use effectively to stabilize a polluted soil or to extract metals from mild polluted soils using Phytoremediation method. Goal was Finding the most efficient of 5 Eucalyptus species to hyperaccumulation of heavy metals (H.M) including Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), Arsenic (As) and Nickel (Ni) in planting areas by Eucalyptus species in Golestan Province in north of Iran as non-Industrial area and Industrial areas of Khozestan province as polluted area in southern part of Iran.

This work deals with (UV-visible and fluorescence) Spectrophotometric methods for the determination of ranitidine hydrochloride (RAN-HCl): UV-visible Spectrophotometric methods include Reaction of (RAN-HCl) with metal ions Cu(II) and Ni(II) in acetonitrile solvent to formed colored complexes, these complexes reacted with 2,2َ bi pyridine (bipy) to formed another stable colored complexes. The wavelength of maximum absorption for the colored complexes formed was found to be (412, 427,439 and 604) nm for [RAN-Cu(II)], [RAN-Ni(II)], RAN-Cu(II)-bipy] and [RAN-Ni(II)-bipy] complexes respectively. The Spectrofluorimetric method depending on quenching of response florescent intensity for (bipy) in aqueous solution.

The corrosion is a kind of major problem faced in the usage of such ferrous metals. The formation of the oxides, sulfides, hydroxides or the compound related to the carboxylic group on the surface of metal due to the chemical reaction between metals and surrounding are known as the corrosion which is highly depended on the sulfur content, salt content, mercaptans content and the acidity of crude oil as well as the chemical composition of ferrous metals. In the current research it was expected to investigate the effect of Murban and Das blend crude oils on the rate of corrosion of seven different ferrous metals which are used in the crude oil refining industry and also expected to investigate the change in hardness of each metal due to the corrosion. The sulfur content, acidity and salt content of each crude oil were determined. A series of similar pieces of seven different types of ferrous metals were immersed in each crude oil separately for 15, 30 and 45 days. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Analytical Chemistry, grade: Publication, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (College of Natural and Applied Sciences), course: Chemistry, language: English, abstract: Biosorption has been widely used as a more efficient alternative for the current expensive approach to heavy metal remediation from water and waste water. The effectiveness of ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) and ripe Musa cardaba (MCR) peels in the removal of Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions was investigated. The amount of metal ions sorbed depended on the metal ion - adsorbent contact time, ion concentration and adsorbent weight. Weight of adsorbent was varied between 0.1 - 0.4g; contact time, 5 - 25 minutes; and ion concentration, 0.01 - 0.04M. The results indicated that Musa sapientum (Ripe) showed higher percentage sorption in removing metal ions from waste water than Musa cardaba (Ripe) peels. The peak percentage sorption of metal ions by MSR peel waste are; Cd2+ (99.95%), Fe2+ (100%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.92%) while metal ions by MCR peel waste was; Cd2+ (99.74%), Fe2+ (99.83%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.60%). The results obtained above showed that both adsorbent species are favourable for sorption and removal of the test heavy metals from their aqueous environment. Nevertheless, ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) is highly recommended for both Fe2+ and Pb2+ uptake due to its sorption capacity and efficiency.

Short measurement times with low excitation light intensities are necessary to observe variations of the fluorescence due to changes in the metabolism of the sensitive biological organisms.With new techniques the fluorescence dynamics can be monitored simultaneously in a broad spectrum during a very short measurement time. That provides information about the spectral differences of the fluorescence dynamics which can vary in correlation with the metabolic changes.The interaction of the photosynthetic subunits and especially the mechanisms regulating the energy transfer are presently interesting and open fields in photosynthesis research.The phototrophic cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina contains membrane extrinsic PBP antenna complexes and mainly Chl d containing membrane intrinsic core antenna complexes which absorb light and transfer excitation energy to the reaction center.The results of our studies suggest a fast excitation energy transfer kinetics of 20-30 ps along the PBP antenna of A.marina followed by a transfer with a time constant of about 60 ps to Chl d.Very often cells or cell fragments are kept at low temperature to decelerate ageing processes.
