Salinity is considered as a major abiotic stress affecting germination, seedling growth and crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Many techniques are used to improve tolerance to salinity. Priming is believed to be an effective technique that increases germination, plant growth and improve yield of Salinity is considered as a major abiotic stress affecting germination, seedling growth and crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Many techniques are used to improve tolerance to salinity. Priming is believed to be an effective technique that increases germination, plant growth and improve yield of several vegetables and crops under saline soil condition. This study was aimed to assess the effect of seed priming on germination and seedling growth of maize (Zea mays L.) exposed to five salinity levels. Primed and unprimed seeds were sown in Petri dishes and pots and irrigated with saline solutions. Priming seeds with NaCl improved germination and growth at both laboratory and field conditions. Further, this study needs to be continued if performance of mature maize plants could also be improved and yield increased by sowing primed seeds in saline soils.

For the past ten years, the greengram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] and blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) sown in rice (Oryza sativa L.) fallows on residual soil moisture was found infested by yellow vein mosaic virus and cuscuta weed (biotic stress)problem. In the absence of immediate solution to these problems, the rice-pulse sequence was replaced by rice-zero till maize (Zea mays L.) sequence. But, unlike pulses, maize crop is raised in rice fallows with supplemental irrigation. Hence, in sequence crop, problems like rice stubble rejuvenation, initial weed competition and pollen drying & barrenness at tasseling stage owing to high temperature emerged (abiotic stress). Hence, the present investigation was undertaken to identify a suitable agronomic package, to overcome these ripples and to characterize soil health status after the rice-maize cropping system.

Salinity and relevant land use change related problem has been triggered in the south-western coastal region of Bangladesh. Remote Sensing and GIS techniques both used to know the salinity effects on land use changes at present context with comparison to previous land use status. Due to saline water intrusion, Shyamnagar Upazila have faced land use conversion related problem throughout the year.

Salinity is the major environmental factors that lead to a deterioration of agricultural land and a reduction in crop productivity worldwide. The given investigations were undertaken to find out the effect of salinity and allelopathy on growth, biochemical contents and accumulation of Osmo-protectants in studied Crop and also to assess whether exogenous application of some essential micronutrients (Mn+B+Zn) through foliar spray could ameliorate the adverse effects of salt+ allelochemical stress on growth and biochemical activities of methi plant. Foliar spraying with micronutrient induced stimulatory effects on growth parameters and nutrients uptake either before or after the salinization treatments. The results of this study suggest that foliar spray with micronutrient may have a potential role for increasing plant tolerance to salinity and allelopathy stress. The application spray appeared to ameliorate the toxic effects of excessive sodium and allelochemical present in growing medium which is reflected by producing economically feasible yield even beyond the threshold value of salinity for studied crop.

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world and in Egypt. Therefore, the present work was designed to investigate the response of corn to nitrogen and manganese fertilization. Two field experiments were conducted during two successive growing seasons of 1997 and 1998. The effect of four nitrogen levels, three manganese nutrient rates and three methods of Mn applications on the growth, grain yield and its components as well as grain quality of maize were investigated. The soil of the experimental plots was clay texture (pH value 7.91, CaCO3 3.89 % and organic matter 1.98 %, 17.3 mg/kg available N and 8.5 mg/kg available Mn). A spilt-plot in a randomized complete block design with four replications was used; the main plots were devoted for nitrogen levels, the sub-plot for Mn levels and their methods of applications. The results of the experiments could be summarized as follows: The highest grain yield and its quality were generally recorded by foliar application or soaking grains with 70 mg Mn /l plus 150 kg N/fed in Qaliuobia Gavernorate. In all cases, consideration should be given to the actual available contents of the nutrient in the soil itself.

Wheat encounters severe salt problems in comparison to rainy season crops because of high salt concentration which is built up in the root zone owing to high crop transpiration or by the use of saline water which adversely affects the growth of plant due to osmotic effects, ionic toxicity, nutritional imbalances and physico-chemical degradation of soil. Although reclamation is a solution to this problem but scarcity of irrigation water, financial constraints and lack of drainage facility hampers its implementation. In such an eventuality, breeding for salinity tolerance is the only admirable approach. Available information on genetic architecture of yield and it's contributing characters of bread wheat for salinity conditions is very less; thus it is necessary to study the genetics for yield and related characteristics and their inheritance under salinity conditions. The ensuing investigation were undertaken to analyse three crosses of wheat including salinity tolerant parents under saline and normal environments with the relevant objectives like estimation of the magnitude of gene effects for yield and its contributing characters in three crosses of wheat for improving tolerance.

In laboratory experiment, dynamics of various P fractions were studied with enriched rock phosphates with Phosphobacteria. The treatment, TRP EnFYM with PB recorded highest quantity of all the P fractions irrespective of soil type and were comparatively superior over MRP EnFYM with and without PB. The PB favourably influenced various P fractions irrespective of soils and rock phosphates. In field experiments, the grain yield of maize was highest (6.62 t/ha) in 100 % P as TRP EnFYM with PB (T14) over SSP in black calcareous soil. The highest phosphorus use efficiency, physiological efficiency and B:C ratio were highest in T14. In red non-calcareous soil, highest grain and stalk yields were observed in T2 (100% P as SSP) and it was on par with T8 (100% P as MRP EnFYM with PB). The increase in P levels increased the grain and stalk yield.The PUE was highest in T2 followed by T8 and the increasing levels of P recorded increase of PUE. The physiological efficiency was highest in T2. The highest response ratio was registered in T6. The highest B:C ratio was recorded in T7 followed by T8.

In Bangladesh (147, 570 km2) coastal region covers almost 20% (29,000 km2) of the country and also it covers more than 30% of the cultivable lands of the country where 53% of the coastal areas are affected by salinity. The success of sustainable agriculture in coastal region is very much dependent upon the availability of cheap and good quality organic amendments. Among the sources of available organic amendments vermicompost, oilcake and bioslurry may beneficial due to having potential source of readily available plant nutrients, growth enhancing substances, and a number of beneficial microorganisms like nitrogen fixing, P solubilizing, reducing salinity and cellulose decomposing organisms. In Bangladesh, application of low cost and available organic amendments may be a good strategy for the management of high saline soil and also for the availability of nutrients for soil and plants. The present investigation deals with the amelioration of salinity and nutrient availability of saline soils (collected from Batiaghata Upazilla under Khulna District in Bangladesh) through the use of organic amendments such as vermicompost, oilcake and bioslurry.

Present investigation was conducted on clusterbean to study the effect of chloride dominated salinity on growth and to explore the possibility of induction of salinity tolerance through deployment of EMS. Accumulation of soluble sugars and free proline in leaves with salinity is indicative of osmotic adjustment of leaves to some extent but decline in protein and starch content is possibly due to ion toxicity. cotyledonary node was found be the best explant and MSB5 medium + 2mgl-1 2,4-D and 1mgl-1 BAP supported best callus growth. 200 mM NaCl was found to be the lethal. Culturing of EMS treated calli on NaCl adjunct medium showed no significant growth of callus upto 2.0h EMS treatment. An increase of duration of EMS treatment beyond 2.0h supported growth of callus which increased upto 3.0h. in general increased starch, protein content, proline content and sodium content on salt amended medium over respective control while it decreased chloride content over respective control. NaCl induced new bands of MW 57.54, 28.18, 26.92 and 20.89 kDa Culturing of these calli on salt amended medium revealed presence of polypeptide bands of MW 67.61, 53.70, 50.12, 28.84, 20.89 and 18.62 kDa.

Salinity is the dissolved salt content in soil or water and is a major issue in irrigated agriculture. Field experiments were conducted to study the soil moisture and soil salinity pattern at different locations for furrow-bed and furrow-ridge irrigated wheat crop. Results were compared to border irrigation. Wheat was sown on plot size of 55.5m X 7.31m having loam soil. Traditional flat sowing was accomplished with row to row distance of 23cm using seed drill and two rows of wheat planted manually on both 30 cm x 60 cm wide furrow-bed and 45cm wide furrow-ridge. Four irrigations were applied and soil salinity was estimated at sowing and harvesting times and the results are presented in this book. This book certainly enhance learning among researcher, scientists, students and farm mangers and helps planning research studies for sustainable environment. This work was conducted to evaluate the impact of seawater irrigation on growth, metabolism and ultrastructure of chloroplasts and oleosomes in flag leaf of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), salt sensitive "Gemmieza-9" and salt resistant "Sids-1", cultivars. Among the cultivars, Sids-1 "salt tolerant" showed a better performance and produced more biomass under salt stress when compared with Gemmieza-9 "salt sensitive". Furthermore, it is clear from this work that the impact of seawater irrigation at 10% or 25% on both wheat cultivars particularly sensitive one had a negative effect on growth vigor of root and shoot, leaf area expansion, pigments content, membrane stability, relative water content, protein content, DNA, RNA as well as ultrastructure of chloroplasts and oleosomes of flag leaf during grain filling. On the other hand, seawater stress resulted in accumulation of inorganic ions, organic solutes, glycerol and saturated fatty acids which in turn involved with cell protection and osmotic adjustment. In addition salinity induced plant defense machinery with varying degrees in both wheat cultivars by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Maize has high production potential when compared to any other cereal crop. The productivity of maize is largely dependent on its nutrient management. The crop has high genetic yield potential hence; it is called miracle crop and Queen of cereals . In Andhra Pradesh, though maize is predominantly grown in kharif, irrigated maize is gaining popularity in view of higher productivity. Maize (Zea mays L.) is a heavy feeder of nutrients. Soil test based fertilizer application is still a rare practice in this area. Hence, there is a wide variation in fertilizer application by farmers. This leads to either excess or deficiency of the nutrients which might result in nutrient imbalances in the soil. As a consequence the maize yield islower than the actual yield potential. To stabilize the yields and economy of maize production, balanced nutrition is essential.The uptake of nutrients by a maize crop producing 5 t ha-1 of grain yield was estimated around 105 kg N, 50 kg P2O5 and 75 kg K2Okg ha-1. A high-resolution hydro-dynamic model for Delaware Bay was developed, validated and applied to hindcast the largely unknown tracers and circultions of the bay, to investigate the roles of these factors in influencing oyster diseases (e.g., the Multinucleated Spheres of unknown origin, MSX), and to inquiry into the future fate of the bay in response to climate change. In the contemporary bay, a negative temperature/salinity correlation was determined to exist under the modern climate via a positive river flow/temperature correlation and a negative river flow/salinity correlation; warm-salty conditions rarely occur, which helps control MSX; a substantial horizontal salinity gradient provides a habitable refuge for oysters. However, according to the sensitivity studies, sea-level rise and warmer surface air may significantly salinize and warm the bay. Intensified river flow cannot reduce the SLR-induced salinization. The new physical environment may be generally unfavorable to oysters if they are related to oyster diseases.

Salinity and high temperature are important environmental adversaries affecting plant growth. Seed pretreatment with thiourea may be an important strategy to cope with these stresses. The objective of this work is to induce salinity and high temperature diminished the growth of both varieties of wheat but tolerant variety (S-24) was relatively less affected than sensitive (MH-97) in terms of growth parameters. Plants raised from pretreated seed of both varieties, but this improvement was greater in the sensitive variety. Main effects of thiourea are improved water status of plant and revealed from improved fresh and dry weight of shoot and root and the whole plant K+ content.These improvements brought about by thiourea are greater in the sensitive variety. These results signify the use of thiourea as seed pretreatment in improving wheat growth in the areas where both salinity and high temperature stresses coincide.

Tesis Doctoral / Disertación del año 2015 en eltema Agronomía, , Idioma: Español, Resumen: Se desarrolló un Sistema de Gestión de Sequía (SGS) para la mitigación y adaptación de los impactos de la sequía agrícola en áreas del municipio Venezuela de la provincia Ciego de Ávila el cual consistió esencialmente en la propuesta de tres nuevos índices para la evaluación de la sequía agrícola: Índice Potencial HidroEdáfico (IPHE), Índice de Sequía Agraria (ISA) e Índice de Sequías Agronómica (ISAg); la elaboración de los mapas de isolíneas de sequía agrícola; la construcción de las curvas de intensidad, frecuencia y duración de la sequía (IFD) y la determinación del impacto económico producido por la sequía agrícola para el cultivo del maíz (Zea Mays) mediante el análisis de la matriz de riesgo. Los principales resultados alcanzados demostraron que el IPHE, el ISA y el ISAg permitieron determinar la magnitud de la sequía agrícola. Los mapas de isolíneas de sequía agrícola construidos permitieron dar un seguimiento a la evolución del fenómeno de sequías desde el punto de vista espacial y temporal. Las curvas IFD para la sequía demostraron su efectividad para la estimación de las variables de severidad de sequía y el análisis económico permitió cuantificar los beneficios según los escenarios de precipitación; así como los niveles de impactos. O aumento da [CO2] apresenta resultados diversos nas plantas de forma direta e indireta, sendo que os efeitos benéficos no crescimento das plantas dependem também de seu estado hídrico. Desta forma, neste trabalho objetivou-se analisar e quantificar a taxa fotossintética e a produtividade sob alta [CO2] nas culturas de milho (Zea mays L.) e feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) submetido a estresse hídrico. Experimentos foram conduzidos com milho e feijão, em que para enriquecer o ar com CO2, foram dimensionadas câmaras de topo aberto, enquanto o estresse hídrico foi aplicado somente na cultura do feijão. Foram realizadas medições da taxa fotossintética e, ao final dos ciclos das culturas, foram determinadas as produções de grãos e matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas. Ambas as culturas apresentaram maiores taxas fotossintéticas em altas [CO2], com maior resposta para o feijão. Em ambas as culturas não há aumento no peso total dos grãos, apesar de altas taxas fotossintéticas. O aumento da [CO2] proporciona aumento da matéria seca da parte aérea somente na cultura do feijão.

In terms of amount of tonnes produced each year, Zea mays also known as maize and corn is the most important crop. Fusarium species are widely distributed and are amongst the most frequently isolated fungal species by plant pathologists and due to the fact that the Fusarium species involved in maize ear rot vary in fungicide sensitivity, pathogenicity as well as in their capability to produce mycotoxins, accurate quantification and identification is of paramount significance. Malachite green agar 2.5 ppm (MGA 2.5) is a potent selective medium for isolation and enumeration of Fusarium spp. In this study, eight different media compositions, potato dextrose agar (PDA), PDA + malachite green oxalate, corn meal agar, ½ PDA + malachite green oxalate, 1% malt agar, carnation leaf agar supplemented with potassium chloride (KCLA), malachite green agar (MGA 2.5) and MGA 2.5 + sterile carnation leaf pieces (MGA 2.5+) were compared using four Fusarium species (F. graminearum, F. proliferatum, F. subglutinans and F. verticillioides) and five commonly encountered saprophytic fungi (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium crustosum, P. digitatum, Trichoderma harzianum and Rhizopus stolonifer).

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Twenty maize genotypes were tested in alpha-lattice design with two replications in research block of National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan from February to June, 2016 to evaluate maize inbred lines for their genetic components association among yield components and correlation and stress tolerance indices. Shorter ASI was found in RML-17, RML-57, RL-107, RL-140, RML-91 whereas more leaf area index in NML-2, RML-91, and RML-24 respectively. Inbred lines, RML-91, RML-17, RML-20, RL-140, RL-140, RML-91 and NML-2 were found lower tassel blast and leaf firing percentage respectively. Inbred lines, RML-76,RML-115,RML-4,RL-111 showed slower leaf senescence and RML-57, RL-101, RML-11, RL-107 showed significant higher value of SPAD chlorophyll content. Heritability and correlation analysis revealed that grain yield, number of kernel ear-1, silk receptivity, shelling percentage, thousand kernel weight plant and ear heights showed presence of additive gene effect and those traits direct could be used as direct selection to improve maize grain yield under heat stress condition. With attention to high negative correlation with anthesis silking interval, tassel blast, leaf firing with grain yield the minimum of anthesis silking interval, tassel blast and leaf firing were the most important index required further genotyping for development of thermo-tolerance lines. Tesis Doctoral / Disertación del año 2015 en eltema Agronomía, , Idioma: Español, Resumen: Se desarrolló un Sistema de Gestión de Sequía (SGS) para la mitigación y adaptación de los impactos de la sequía agrícola en áreas del municipio Venezuela de la provincia Ciego de Ávila el cual consistió esencialmente en la propuesta de tres nuevos índices para la evaluación de la sequía agrícola: Índice Potencial HidroEdáfico (IPHE), Índice de Sequía Agraria (ISA) e Índice de Sequías Agronómica (ISAg); la elaboración de los mapas de isolíneas de sequía agrícola; la construcción de las curvas de intensidad, frecuencia y duración de la sequía (IFD) y la determinación del impacto económico producido por la sequía agrícola para el cultivo del maíz (Zea Mays) mediante el análisis de la matriz de riesgo. Los principales resultados alcanzados demostraron que el IPHE, el ISA y el ISAg permitieron determinar la magnitud de la sequía agrícola. Los mapas de isolíneas de sequía agrícola construidos permitieron dar un seguimiento a la evolución del fenómeno de sequías desde el punto de vista espacial y temporal. Las curvas IFD para la sequía demostraron su efectividad para la estimación de las variables de severidad de sequía y el análisis económico permitió cuantificar los beneficios según los escenarios de precipitación; así como los niveles de impactos.
